assets missing when launching/debugging Rails from RubyMine - ruby-on-rails

I'm trying to test an opensource Ruby on Rails site (pophealth). I've got a VM running Ubuntu 12.10 and RubyMine. It took a while to get all of the gems working right but they are working well now. However, now all of the static assets that are supposed to be precompiled, are missing.

I can see in Firebug it came back with a 404 error. I've run rake assets:precompile several times and that works for the site fine when I run it normally under apache. But with RubyMine working against the same root directory it doesn't like it. I believe RubyMine is running a different web server called 'Thin'. They only thing I can think of is that it is caching its own copy of the webroot somewhere else. I've run find many times but I can't seem to find another local cache of the webroot.
Does anybody have any ideas?

I solved it. This was a stupid mistake on my part. In config/environments/production.rb, I had to set config.assets.compile = true, and then repeat this for the other environments of course.

rails 4.2 capistrano 3 Ubuntu nginx puma, getting routing error/no assets shows up

After following this tutorial, I tried was able to set up a rails application on an ec2 Ubuntu instance, running nginx web server and puma app server, deployed with capistrano 3. However, none of my assets are showing up, and I'm getting routing errors for basic functions of the Devise gem such as logging out. The chrome dev tool console shows 404 errors for the compiled application.css and application.js files.
I think the assets are there because if I ssh into the instance and go to the folder where my app is, I can see a bunch of files under public/assets. Also, if I check the capistrano logs, I can find the line bundle exec rake assets:precompile, and the status for that is successful. I tried things like going into the production.rb file and changing config.serve_static_files = ENV['RAILS_SERVE_STATIC_FILES'].present? to config.serve_static_files = true
but still no assets. I think the biggest suspect is that there is some sort of routing error, because I don't really understand how web servers, app servers, and aws instances interact with each other. Could anyone point me in the right direction on debugging this? If you need to see a specific config file please comment below.
Ok it turns out all I had to do is copy the secrets.yml from the local repo for my app to the shared folder that is in [my_app_name]/shared/config. So my app didn't know where to look for the secret key base.
Although I'm still confused on why not having the secret.yml would prevent assets from served...

Rails Openshift Hot Deploy assets not served

i have a Rails application deployed on Openshift. I added marker for hot deploing and hot deploying itself works fine, but during the time application is hot deployed css and js files are not served. When hot deployment ends these files work fine again. I also use Bootstrap and Sass in this application (gem 'bootstrap-sass'). Do you have any idea why this happens?
The files are being served by Apache via the Passenger module. The files are being replaced "in place" which causes them to be removed/rebuilt, which is causing them to not be served during that time, and since they are static assets, they are not stored in memory. Unfortunately there is currently no way to make hot deploy work fully with Rails to keep the site 100% working while it is deployed.
One solution is to have your assets in a separate running project, since there is no easy way to have them available as all times as #developercorey explains..
It's probably not the best solution, but would be a simple patch-solution which is not tightly coupled to one particular hosting platform.
I fixed this issue, and it works now. I will explain what I did, maybe it will help somebody.
Basically there is need to precompile your assets locally, and commit and push them. This is done byrake assets:precompile RAILS_ENV=production
But there is a gotcha!!! Locally precompiled assets doesn't match those that are generated on Openshift. How is this possible? There is a bug on Openshift, that assets are generated on production with RAILS_ENV=development :/ More info here:

so there is need to add environmental variable on your application:
rhc set-env RAILS_ENV=production -a app_name
then generated assets match.
So after fixing it, when during changes to assets, we need to precompile them again. And to make them work during hot deploying there is need to have both old precompiled assets and new precompiled assets in repo. For example:
If you have old file:
application-10770925dc8abd4ceab34119af4032163cc5a94f3523d60d321f33a999171d58.cssand new precoimpiled file:
application-82f6fca47056cbda52cb32086051f031b880e2630a137f0e41e96cb2eef923ee.css
they both have to be in repository. During hot deploying old asset is still referenced, so it has to be in repository. After hot deploying ends, new asset is referenced. In the next commit and push old asset may be removed.
So basically this issue is fixed for me, and hot deploying works fine now.

Pushing RoR app to Heroku, files in /public are missing

Let me start by saying I am using Ruby 2.0.0 and Rails 4.1.1
I've worked my way through the Treehouse basic RoR course; ending in a very basic version of Twitter. I have the application running just fine on my local install, but when I pushed it to Heroku it seems to be missing the files in the /public directory; namely the /assets css and javascript.
I've precompiled my assets as instructed, and verified that they area indeed showing up on my GitHub remote that is using the same branch. I was told that Heroku will not compile your assets for you.
All my routes and HTML is displaying just fine, but I cannot pull any of the files that live in the /public directory (404.html, 500.html, etc)
It feels to me like it is a permissions issue or something with the /public directory, but I haven't found a way to actually browse what files are on my Heroku instance. I've tried re-pushing several times while making small changes, and the css/js never seems to appear.
In case that you have already set:
config.serve_static_assets = true
in your config/environments/production.rb
And still not working, you can actually see the logs from your heroku app using heroku logs or heroku logs -n NUMBER_OF_DESIRED_LINES_HERE in your terminal.

Mongrel not detecting changes in Rails classes?

I have a Rails app installed on a Slicehost server running Apache 2 and Ubuntu LTC 10.04. Things have worked beautifully up until now: I edit a file, do a quick mongrel_rails cluster::restart, and the changes are reflected in production. However, suddenly this process has broken down.
For example, I have a class called Master located in /lib/master.rb. I added a new method to this class that simply runs puts "it works!", then restarted the mongrel cluster. Looking at the production logs, the server throws an error and thinks this method doesn't exist. When I go to the console using ruby script/console production, however, I can use this new method perfectly. I even tried deleting the file containing entire Master class. Once again, the production thought it was still there, but the production console correctly recognized it was missing.
Any ideas? How can the production environment detect a class that doesn't even exist anymore?
Funny, I spend 2 hours debugging this, then post to StackOverflow and figure it out in 20 minutes.
The problem is that I needed to also restart my background jobs as well. They were running the old version of the classes stored in /lib. It's interesting that this problem has never snagged me before.

Thinking Sphinx delta indexing fails in production

Here's what I've determined:
Delta indexing works fine in development
Delta indexing does not work when I push to the production server, and no action is logged in searchd.log
I'm running Phusion Passenger, and, as recommended in the basic troubleshooting guide, have confirmed that:
www-data has permission to run indexing rake tasks (ran them from command line manually)
the path to indexer and searchd are correct (/usr/local/bin)
there are no errors in production.log
What on earth could I possibly be missing? I'm running Ruby Enterprise 1.8.6, Rails 2.3.4, Sphinx 0.9.8.1, and Thinking Sphinx 1.2.11.

Last night as I slept it hit me. Unsurprisingly, it was a stupid issue involving bad configuration, though I am rather surprised that it produced the results it did. I guess I don't know much about Thinking Sphinx internals.
Recently I migrated servers. sphinx.yml looked like this:
production:
bin_path: '/usr/local/bin'
host: mysql.mysite.com
On the new server, MySQL was just a local service, but I had forgotten to remove that line. Interestingly, manual rake reindexing still worked just fine. I'm intrigued that Thinking Sphinx didn't throw an error when trying to reload the deltas, since mysql.mysite.com no longer exists, even though that was clearly the source of the issue.

Are there any clues in Apache/Nginx's error log?
Here's the next troubleshooting step I would take. Open up the file for the delta indexing strategy you are using (presumably lib/thinking_sphinx/deltas/default_delta.rb). Find the line where it actually generates the indexing command. In mine (v1.1.6) it's line 20:

Change that so you can log the command itself, and maybe log the output as well:
command = `#{config.bin_path}indexer --config #{config.config_file} #{rotate} #{delta_index_name model}`
RAILS_DEFAULT_LOGGER.info(command)
output = `#{command}`
RAILS_DEFAULT_LOGGER.info(output)
Deploy that to production and tail the log while modifying a delta-indexed model. Hopefully that will actually show you the problem. Of course maybe the problem is elsewhere in the code and you won't even get to this point, but this is where I would start.
I was having this problem and found the "bin_path" solution mentioned above. When it didn't seem to work, it took me a while to realize that I'd pasted in the example code for "production" when I was testing on "stagiing" environment. Problem solved!
This was after making sure that the rake tasks that config, index, and start sphinx are all running as the same user as your passenger instance. If you log into the server as root to run these tasks, they will work in the console but not via passenger.
I had the same problem. Works on the command line, not inthe app.
Turns out that we still had a slave database that we were using for the indexing, but the slave wasn't getting updated.
As above, same issues were faced our side on two machine. The first one we had an issue with mysql which showed in apache2 log. Only seemed to affect local OSX machine..
Second time when we deployed to Ubuntu server, we had same issue. Rails c production was fine, no errors, bla bla bla.
Ended up being a permissions problem. Couldn't figure this out as there were no problems starting, although I guess I was doing so as root.
Using capistrano and passenger, we did this:
Create a passenger user and added to www-data group
Changed user in deploy.rb to be passenger
Manually changed all the /current files to be owned by above
Logged in as passenger user.
Ran rake ts:rebuild RAILS_ENV="production"
Worked a treat for us...
