WebApi and Controller overkill - asp.net-mvc

I'm starting to integrate WebApi & OData into a test bed application. Let's keep it simple and stick with one domain entity, Customer. Obviously I will have an MVC controller. Searching gets it own view model (based on a Lucene index), so that will be separate controller, right now ODataController. But since the view/edit pages will have their own view models, they'd be their own controller. This starts to feel like overkill.
Trying to figure out a good design to make this work and still work with the idea of the URL representing the entity. Should the entity in the URL be Customer and somehow I provide different representations based on URL params? Or should Customer/CustomerSearch/CustomerEdit be different entities (which doesn't sound right)?

I'm presuming that this WebAPI application is going to be a separate solution from the ASP.NET MVC solution you are going to build. In a nutshell, the WebAPI will be the business/domain layer and the MVC will be the presentation layer.
So, in speaking of the WebAPI solution, you only need a single ApiController for the Customer example you presented above. The view/edit request may have their own view models...or not. Depending on how you craft the view model, you may be able to have a single view model for customers, or you could develop a customer view hierarchy where the base view model holds the search-related data and the descendant view model fleshes out the details.
Your routing requests could look like:
GET - /Customer/ retrieve multiple customers
(supplying OData parameters in query string)
GET - /Customer/{id} retrieve a single customer
PUT - /Customer/{id} edit customer
What it looks like is you will need is two routes, one ApiController for Customer, and three request methods for what you described. I don't recommend a separate ApiController for OData, because the functionality is dependent on a entity.

Umbraco MVC Implementation - View does not depend on Umbraco implementations

I have followed this nice tutorial which explains how you can take even more advantage of using Umbraco as a content delivery system. Tutorial MVC Umbraco => Your model and views should not depend on specific Umbraco implementations which is a huge advantage for real front-end developers.
The controller inherited from Umbraco.Web.Mvc.RenderMvcController in order to access the data from the CMS.
Now my problem is that we can't use #HTML.actionlink for navigation, it seems that this is only supported in SurfaceController.
Now my question is how would we implement navigation inside Umbraco.Web.Mvc.RenderMvcController? Can we still use the native #HTML.actionlink tag?
No you can't. Simply because all requests pass through a single action. In order to retrieve a path to a CMS-managed page, you need to use the node/content traversal the #Model provides. See here for more details on this.

To clarify, the author of the article is suggesting that the Umbraco implementation should be more in line with a traditional MVC implementation with little or no logic in the views. Therefore, any querying of node data should happen prior to the view (e.g. in the Mappers). So this is where you would have to retrieve the links.
Umbraco's default MVC implementation forces all requests to go via a single action on a single controller. The author's implementation allows the requests to be shared across one controller per document type - which is better IMO. But it still means that things like Html.ActionLink are redundant in the views since there isn't an action per page.

If you wanted to build a navigation list with a combination of Umbraco-managed pages and non-Umbraco pages, regardless of the implementation, I would:
Create a child action and view for the navigation in a separate NavigationController that inherits from the SurfaceController
Use the this.CurrentPage property of the inherited SurfaceController to traverse the Umbraco content cache to retrieve the relevant Umbraco-managed pages. You can then use the Url property of each page result to get its path, and the Name property to get the page title
Use this.Url.Action("action", "controller") to retrieve the paths to specific non-Umbraco actions. Alternatively, if the pages are database-managed, use you data layer (e.g. EF, NHibernate, PetaPoco) at this point
Combine these in a Dictionary to make the list you require where the Key is the path and the Value is the page title
Pass this down to the view as the view model.
Of course there any many more things to consider like caching, but in a nutshell, that's a fairly basic implementation.

How do viewModels fit into WebApi implementations with ASP .NET MVC?

Right now I have a few layers to my project: Core <> Repository <> API... and I'll be building a "client" MVC web project layer. My question is - where do viewModels belong in this architecture?
Should the controller methods of the Web Project call the API (multiple times - getTheseObjects, getThoseObjects) to get data, and then build the viewModel? Or should the API support calls to construct the viewModel so that only one API call (getAllObjectsForThisPage) needs to be made per page for the application?
Your view models will belong in your client MVC app. They will be specific to the views in that individual client application, and usually will get populated by domain objects.
This is how it can work: the controller mediates the https requests thus calls a API endpoint and receives some data or domain objects, which in turn you use to populate your view models.
Take a look at automapper if you are returning domain objects from your api, it really helps with mapping domain object to view models.
You can place ViewModels into your MVC application, but you could create something that is called DTO (Data Transformation Object) and return that from Web API to your client. In essence it will be a class with only the necessary information that you pass to the client. If you want to call that ViewModel you might as well go ahead and call it like that. My suggestion would be to issue one call and to return all the necessary information. One call one trip.
My practice usually is to separate ViewModel from MVC and store it in some other project. The service layer would prepare a ViewModel and return it to MVC. The reason for this is that once I had a requirement to build WPF application after MVC was completed. It was quite a pain moving things around and retesting everything to make sure that it still works fine.

How do I display multiple pieces of user information on every page in ASP.NET MVC 2?

I'm building a site in ASP.NET MVC 2 that will allow for anonymous users and registered users. When a user is logged in, I want to display multiple pieces of information related to that profile on every page (i.e. hometown, favorite color, etc.). From a view perspective, I understand using Master pages and creating partials to keep it DRY.
However, where I am getting stuck is how do I pass this user information to the view for every page? I already have the relationships between database tables established (I'm using EF), so I can do this on an individual basis for each action through ViewData, but that's obviously ridiculous for every page on the site.
So far, my research has started to lead me down the path of creating a base controller and base view model that the other controllers and view models will inherit from. But I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Any pointers?
If you have your Master page use the RenderAction method, it can invoke controller actions for the various repetitive parts of your page, each of which can perform data access and render a partial view. That allows you to separate your view models while still displaying certain elements on all your pages.
This approach works great for us.
We use a base controller to store it in ViewData.
You could also use an action attribute on the controller rather than inheriting from a base controller.
You could create a base class for your models that contains the data that is display on every page.

Is there any dependency between view and a model?

Normally in the MVC Pattern, when a user clicks on a page the request would be sent ,then controller would handle the request ,then process it using the model and route it to the appropriate view.
I have read the post about the passive model and active model,but is there a possibility where the view directly interacts with the model, would that be a bi-directional relationship (i.e Model<->View) or one-directional (i.e Model->View).
Is it appropriate to have a relationship between Model and View? Well in a ASP.NET MVC project should i have a relationship between model and view, or have it independent of the model?
I think it's almost always preferable to have your views be model-specific, that is, strongly-typed. Where models share related data, you can reuse partial views that are specific to that subset of data. In ASP.NET MVC, your model is -- or should be -- ignorant of the view since they only way they can interact is through a web request, which is a controller function. No you may say that you could interact through web services, but I would consider those to just be another flavor of controller. In fact, with MVC, I see very little need to develop a separate web service at all, using REST-based controller actions instead.
I always see the View as the way to present the Model. According to this point of view, the View is Model aware and in ASP.NET MVC you should inherit pages from ViewPage to avoid abusing from ViewData or castings.
With that in mind, the Model is not view aware and is just an object that is used from the view to present data to the user.
Finally, you can share the same Model from different Views, for example an XML output can share the same model as the HTML output but the views can be very different.
The cycle is more or less, Controller generates Model, passes it to the View, that shows de Model and in case there's interaction, posts the input to the Controller and the cycle starts again.
In Java Swing MVC is implemented as the View and Controller combined, with a View that both reads from the model and registers for events from it which effectively makes them loosely dependent on each other.
Usually web applications don't do this as the real view is rendered on the client and can't receive events from the model as easily, so in those cases the relationship only goes one way. Its certainly not a bad thing to have a relationship between the model and the view as long as the Model does not dependent directly on and view classes. In that case a dependency cycle would be set up and that harms maintenance and especially testing.
For example the way this is achieved in Swing is via a Listener interface, which the view can then implement/provide an implementation of to the model.

Controller can be visualised as the main interface between client and server to get any response from the server. It processes the client request, fetches data from repository and then prepares the view data. The Model-View-Controller (MVC) is an architectural design pattern which exists, primarily, to separate business logic from the presentation. Basically, you don't want your back-end touching your front. It typically looks like this:
The reasons for doing this is because, by separating the back-end and the front, you don't tie your user-interface directly to your data/work. This allows you to put new interfaces onto your business logic without affecting said logic. In addition, it also improves the ease of testing.
A simple example of where MVC comes in handy - let's say you have an application that manages your company's finances. Now, if you are correctly using MVC, you can have a front end that sits at some financier's desk and lets him handle transactions, manage the finances, etc. BUT, because the business logic is separate, you can also provide a front-end to your CEO's Blackberry that lets him see the current status of the business. Because the two front-ends are different, they can do different things while still providing (different types of) access to the data.

Since you updated your question a bit, I'll update my answer. There is no perfect science to the separation of MVC. There are some good rules of thumb, however. For example, if you are talking about GUI components, that is probably a view. (Are you talking about look and feel, usability, etc.) If you are talking about data and the "business" side of the house (databases, logic, etc), you are probably referring to a model. And, anything that controls the interaction between the two is most likely a controller.
In addition, it should be noted that, while Views and Models are typically "physically" separated, a controller can exist with a view when it makes sense.
You are correct when you say the framework (or even language) for MVC doesn't matter. The pattern itself is language agnostic and really describes a way to architect your system.

I think there's some value to learning received doctrine. But there is also value in understanding how the doctrine came to be the way it is.
Trygve Reenskaug is widely credited with inventing MVC. N. Alex Rupp's article Beyond MVC: A new look at the servelet architecture includes a History of MVC. In a section on Reenskaug's 1978 work at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, there's a link to his paper Thing-Model-View-Editor: an Example from a planningsystem. There the pieces are described like this.
Thing

MVC Triads emerged in SmallTalk-80. The model was an abstraction of the real-world concept, the view was its visual representation, and the controller was the buttons and slider bars that allowed the user to interact with it (thereby "controlling" the view). All pieces in the triad were interconnected and could communicate with the other two pieces, so there was no layering or abstraction involved. Since then, Reenskaug has "preferred to use the term Tool rather then Controller." According to his notes, these are the terms he has used in later implementations
Some logic and model should be invoked to generate some data (structured or semi-structured). From this data the returned page/JSON/etc. is created, typically with only rudimentary outlining logic.
The first part (creating the data) is done by the controller (via the model usually). The second part - by the View. The ViewModel is the data structure being passed between controller and view, and usually contains only accessors.
Model represents your data and how it's manipulated. Thus, model touches the DB.
View is your UI.
Controler is the glue between them.
MVC stands for Model, View, Controller.

In simple and graspable terms,
MVC allows you to develop your applications in a way that your business data and presentation data are separated. With this, a developer and designer can work independently on a MVC app without their work clashing. MVC makes your app avail OOP too.
