URL Stop using Delphi service - delphi

I want to have background service written in Delphi 7, that stops a specific URL from being loaded by any browser. Is this possible?
Can anyone point me in a direction?

There are two approaches of which the second one is technically the best:
Write a DLL that you inject into all processes and if these processes are for a browser you have to intercept and filter all traffic, e.g. using Windows sockets
Write a Layered service provider that works a bit like a firewall (at a lower level in the OS)
I've worked in internet filtering software and I can tell you both are big undertakings.
We initially took the first approach, then switched to the other because it's technically better. [And we never finished that transition because the company folded ;-(]
We did not write our own LSP (it's a big job in itself) but used the products from Komodia. Although they write for C, the people were very helpful answering our questions about porting to Delphi.
But as I said earlier, this is BIG: you have to deal with 32 and 64 bit code, http versus https, protecting services from being stopped, etc. Any non-programming solution that you can find is better (although easy to circumvent).
If you still want to program: prepare for 1 man-year of coding using LSP.

A service, no, I don't think so. But you can edit the 'hosts' file so that the domain of the url points to 127.0.0.1. You can make a service that 'guards' this file, although the service itself must have elevated rights to be able to edit it, and of course, the service itself can be killed as well, if the user has the rights to do so.
Anyway, if you manage to edit the file, the browser will not be able to find the server by domain name. Of course, urls with an IP address cannot be blocked this way and neither can you block specific urls, only the entire domain.
But in general, this is not something to solve using a custom service, but in the firewall on either the PC or the router.

For Internet Explorer, you can write a Browser Helper Object that IE itself loads and passes browser events to. The BHO can then accept/reject URLS on a per-request basis as needed.

I'm developing an application that is able to determine which application using internet. Now my problem is that i want to know the process name before it successfully establish connection much like a firewall.
I'm using Delphi2009. So the suggestions in that technology are appreciated.
Look at Winsock Layered Service Providers to monitor traffic. I believe LSPs are DLLs that get loaded into each process, so you should be able to call GetModuleFileName(NULL) to discover the EXE name when your DLL is loaded.
The Wikipedia article linked above shares my strongest concerns:
One major common issue with LSPs was that if they were to be removed
or unregistered improperly or if the LSP was buggy, it would result in
corruption of the Winsock catalog in the registry, and the entire
TCP/IP stack would break and the computer could no longer access the
network.
So if you are new to Windows programming and/or do not take proper precautions with writing these types of filter drives, then tread carefully. Otherwise, a bug in your program will easily screw up the user's machine.

How to look for any and all computers on a network which are using my service?

I have a custom pair of client/server sockets (TJDServerSocket and TJDClientSocket) which wrap the TServerSocket and TClientSocket in the ScktComp unit. I don't have any issues to fix, but would like to know something. I'd like to add a feature to the client side to automatically search the network for any instances of a server socket (specifically my server component).
I'm open to any suggestions, but has to be specific to the use of the ScktComp unit in Delphi 7.

Never used the TServerSocket and TClientSocket myself, and I don't have the help files within reach, so I can't immediately see if this would work with those components.
For a project I did I needed something like that too. I ended up with using UDP to broadcast a discovery request (within the same subnet of course). The server, listening on a particular port for such a request, would reply its data back. When multiple servers would exist (a situation that though rare could occur) the client just picked the server with the required service(s) and the least load. That load was part of the data the server send back.
It worked out nice, wasn't all that difficult to write, and turned out reasonably efficient too.
The request protocol is completely up to you. The one I devised allowed clients to send a request detailing the services they need, and servers replying listing their services and the load (= connected clients in active use).
After selecting the server to talk to, a client would register itself for the services it needed, and could use them after that.

Mailslots is a nice option here. It'll broadcast to every PC on your subnet. See Jeroen's answer to this question:

Searching is as easy as port scanning.
If you don't like the brute force approach, the server can register itself to a well known service application (could be a web server), and the client can connect to the service application to ask. It's quieter than broadcasting.
With more information, such as details about the network (who's it for?), I can suggest a more precise answer.

Printing from one Client to another Client via the Server

I don't know if it sounds crazy, but here's the scenario -
I need to print a document over the internet. My pc ClientX initiates the process using the web browser to access a ServerY on the internet and the printer is connected to a ClientZ (may be yours).
1. The document is stored on ServerY.
2. ClientZ is purely a cliet; no IIS, no print server etc.
3. I have the specific details of ClientZ, IP, Port, etc.
4. It'll be completely a server side application (and no client-side on ClientZ) with ASP.NET & C#
- so, is it possible? If yes, please give some clue. Thanks advanced.
This is kind of to big of a question for SO but basically what you need to do is
upload files to the server -- trivial
do some stuff to figure out if they are allowed to print the document -- trivial to hard depending on scope
add items to a queue for printing and associate them with a user/session -- easy
render and print the document -- trivial to hard depending on scope
notify the user that the document has been printed
handling errors
the big unknowns here are scope, if this is for a school project you probably don't have to worry about billing or queue priority in step two. If its for a commercial product billing can be a significant subsystem in its self.
the difficulty in step 4 depends directly on what formats you are going to support as many formats are going to require document specific libraries or applications. There are also security considerations here if this is a commercial product since it isn't safe to try to render all types of files.
Notifications can be easy or hard depending on how you want to do it. You can post back to the html page, but depending on how long its going to take for a job to complete it might be nice to have an email option as well.
You also need to think about errors. What is going to happen when paper or toner runs out or when someone tries to print something on A4 paper? Someone has to be notified so that jobs don't just build up.
On the server I would run just the user interaction piece on the web and have a "print daemon" running as a service to manage getting the documents printed and monitoring their status. I would use WCF to do IPC between the two.
Within the print daemon you are going to need a set of components to print different kinds of documents. I would make one assembly per type (or cluster of types) and load them into your service as plugins using MEF.
sorry this is so general, but you are asking a pretty general and difficult to answer question.

Windows UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) service - turn off UPS?

I'm using the UPS service to monitor the state of my UPS from an application -- the key at HKLM\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\UPS\Status has all the information you can get from the Power control panel. BUT -- I'd like to be able to tell the UPS to shut down from my app as well. I know that the service can tell the UPS to shut down -- for instance, after running a set number of minutes on battery -- and I'm wondering if there's some kind of command I can send to the service to initiate a shutdown manually.
I'm having trouble searching for this information -- people tend to misspell "Uninterruptible" (hrm, Firefox red-lined that but doesn't have an alternative) and "UPS" just gets hits for the shipping service. Maybe I can do something through System.ServiceController, or WMI?
CLARIFICATION: Yes, I am talking about powering down the physical UPS device. I know how to stop the service. I figured it would be a common problem -- I want my UPS to turn off with the PC. I had an idea I'm going to try, based on this page. You see, APC (and everybody else) has to supply a DLL for the UPS service to call, and since the function calls are well documented, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to P/Invoke them. I'll re-edit this once I know whether or not it worked.
Update: I tried invoking UPSInit, then UPSTurnOff, and nothing happens. I'll tinker with it some more, but the direct call to apcups.dll might be a dead end.
Check my comments to Herman, you want to shut the UPS down, not the UPS SERVICE, correct? I mean, you want that thing to shut off, kill the power, etc, right?
If so, you are looking it on a UPS by UPS model. I doubt two of them would work the same.
In your searches, instead of UPS, try "APC", or "battery". I think a lot of the code is what runs on laptops to deal with being on battery, etc...
Some place hidden in some dusty old files I have protocol information for APC UPS's, and the commands they respond to, and what they send to the PC etc. But this was WAY back in the day when we used to connect our UPS's to our computers with SERIAL cables... You could actually talk to a UPS with Qmodem or Hyperterm...
Learned it from talking to the guys at APC. They are very nice, and helpful. Now-a-days, I think you just post a URL coming from your Powerchute software, and it will talk directly to the UPS, and carry out your commands.
OK, I have the answer (tested!), but it's not pretty. My APC UPS communicates using the APC "Smart" protocol (more here). What you need in my case is a "soft shutdown", "S" command. But first you need to make sure it's in "Smart" mode ("Y"). Now, if you want to let the Windows UPS service monitor state, the service will have an iron grip on the COM port. So you can either a) let the Windows service turn the UPS off, or b) kill the service and turn the UPS off yourself.
The UPS itself has a "grace period" after it gets the "S" command, giving you time to shut down your OS. This means that to do (a) above, you have to:
Kill utility (mains) power
Wait for the Windows UPS Service timeout (default and minimum 2 minutes)
Wait for Windows to shut down -- right near the end, it will send the "S" command
Wait for the UPS grace period, after which it will actually turn itself off
I think we're going to opt for (a), just because (b) involves extra work killing the service and implementing the serial comms.
Please, tell in what language are you trying to do that... if you're using .NET you can do that with ServiceController class (read the docs).
For controlling services in Win32 API using C/C++, Service Functions (Windows).
For example to stop a service you can use ControlService function as follows (this is a quick and dirty example):
OpenService (hServMgr, TEXT("\\UPS_SERVICE_0"), SC_MANAGER_ALL_ACCESS);
SERVICE_STATUS stat;
ControlService (hUpsService, SERVICE_CONTROL_STOP, &stat)
Note that you need to provide a Service Manager handle in hServMgr and the \\UPS_SERVICE_0 name is the name that must match with your desired UPS service (either the Windows built-in or another).
Remember that to stop a service you need the proper security rights. This is not a problem with an Adminstration account, but keep in mind what happens when logging with a non-admin account.

About shutting down the physical UPS device, I remember back in WIn98 days I was able to poweroff the device talking with the UPS through the COM port, altough I don't remember the brand or how the programming interface was.

How should I monitor potential threats to my site?

By looking at our DB's error log, we found that there was a constant stream of almost successful SQL injection attacks. Some quick coding avoided that, but how could I have setup a monitor for both the DB and Web server (including POST requests) to check for this? By this I mean if there are off the shelf tools for script-kiddies, are there off the shelf tools that will alert you to their sudden random interest in your site?
Funnily enough, Scott Hanselman had a post on UrlScan today which is one thing you could do to help monitor and minimize potential threats. It's a pretty interesting read.
UrlScan does seem like a nice option for iis6 and 7; I also found: dotDefender for pay which also covers Apache or IIS 5-7, and I had found an SQL Injection sanitation ISAPI
It is also worth noting in light of a recent wide spread SQL Injection attempt that dissallowing your webapp's db user account from querying the system tables (in MS SQL Server it's sysobjects and syscolumns) is a good idea.
I think this thread warrants more free solutions for Apache and other web servers.
Unfortunately intrusion detection was not what I had in mind, so sgfree isn't exactly a web site attack monitor, unless I'm not understanding how it works.
If you could go back and modify your app code, I'd suggest getting log4j/log4net integrated into the application. From there you could write code that would check a form field or URL (say at the global.asax level for .NET apps) and make a log entry when malicious code is detected.
The nice thing about log4j/log4net is that you can configure an e-mail/pager/SMS type appender so as soon as the malicious attempt was caught, you would be notified.
I'm in the process of merging some log4net code into our CMS system we have and I'm looking to do just this in light of the influx of ASPRox attacks that have been coming our way.
Monitoring web and DB access logs should alert you to things like this, but if you want a more fully featured alert system I would suggest some kind of IDS/IPS. You'll need a spare machine though, and a switch that can do port mirroring.
If you have those then an IDS is a cheap way of monitoring your traffic for many intrusion attempts (there will be lots). Snort (www.snort.org) based IDSes are excellent, and there are some free fully packaged versions available. One I have used is StrataGuard (http://sgfree.stillsecure.com/), and it can be configured as an IDS (Intrusion Detection System) or as an IPS (Intrusion Prevention System). It's free to use if your traffic does not exceed 5Mbps.
If you do go with an IDS/IPS I'd advise you to let it run as a simple IDS for a month or so, before you allow it to prevent attacks.
This may be overkill, but if you have a spare machine lying around it can't hurt to have an IDS running passively.
You can set up your system to kick out some error message that then makes a JSON or http call to a system that will monitor, report (log) and send out any kind of alert such as SMS/email or a phone call.

Especially if you need to monitor multiple simultaneous events, which it sounds like you have going on, this might be a good fix.
