How to stopupdatingLocation when the app goes to background (ios6) - ios

I have instantiated locationManager in many of my view controllers. In order to save on battery, I want to stop the locationmanager from updating the location, so I was thinking of calling stopUpdatingLocation inside viewDidUnload in my VCs but viewDidUnload is being deprecated in ios6. Is there a clean way for me to stop all the updatinglocation?

You can use the UIApplicationDelegate method :
- (void)applicationWillResignActive:(UIApplication *)application
Inside this method you can call stopUpdatingLocation.

stop Updating the location in
- (void)applicationDidEnterBackground:(UIApplication *)application
{

An earlier answer suggested calling stopUpdatingLocation from applicationWillResignActive. The better solution is to make the call from applicationDidEnterBackground instead.
I've found that calling stopUpdatingLocation from applicationWillResignActive causes the alert that asks the user for permission to use the location to disappear immediately before the user can tap anything.
This occurs because applicationWillResignActive is called when the permission dialog appears. This will call stopUpdatingLocation immediately after startUpdatingLocation, causing the dialog to immediately disappear.

Termination of an app running in the background

I am currently developing an app that will need to terminate after running in the background for more than five minutes. In order to do this, I will have to have a timer running in the background after the the Home button has been pressed or in case of an interruptions such as an SMS or a telephone call, then, after five minutes the applicationWillTerminate method will be called. My first question is should I put the applicationWillTerminate in the applicationWillResignActive method or in the applicationDidEnterBackground method? My second question is since this is an app with more that one view, Should I write these things in the AppDelegate class or elsewhere? Thank you for your response.
1) You can't force your app to finish programatically.
2) You should never call these AppDelegate methods by yourself. They're meant to be called only by the system.

This is pretty ghetto, but what you can do is make your app crash when you want it to exit, and it will close automatically, granted that's not closing the app, but there's no real harm in it as long as you are in control of how it crashes try to go for a bad access error, aka trying to access something that has been deallocated
as for running a timer in the background, i don't know per say if you can do that, but as an alternative you can save the time when they leave the app aka the app goes into the background and then you can have all the events return to your app of the view controller that is first responder, and each UIEvent has a time stamp, and regardless of which event it is you can compare the time stamps and see if it's greater than 5 minutes
Regardless i don't suggest any of the above, but that is the best answer i can come up with for your question
the code for receiving events out side of your app

will start the event tracking and the call back is:

but you have to remember to

Every time my app launches (whether from cold launch or background) I want to have it do something, how do I accomplish this?

I want to check every time the app launches whether or not there's a URL in the clipboard, and if so, do something with it. Which method fires that I can override whenever the app launches, whether from a cold launch (it was killed in the background for instance) or if I just press the home button, copy a URL and jump back in.
Is it one of these?

Confused.
As #rmaddy says, the correct method to use once the app launched is applicationWillEnterForeground: from your app delegate.
This method will be called when the user jump backs in, but NOT in other circumstances you don't need to respond to (such as the user receiving a text message and dismissing it).
However, from my testing, applicationWillEnterForeground: is not called when an app is launched from cold; you should catch that in applicationDidFinishLaunchingWithOptions:.
So, basically, your app delegate should include code like this:

And the handling of app launches from background can be handled with the help of method:

Based on the above call, you can handle your application.
In your app delegate add it to the methods that the other answers have suggested (applicationDidFinishLaunchingWithOptions:). In your root view controller register for the following notification. This will always be called when your application launches once it has already started running.

This will cover both the instances when the app launches and when you are just bringing it back from the background.

applicationDidBecomeActive not being called at all

I am using an NSLog statement in order to understand when -applicationDidBecomeActive: gets called, but it seems that it never gets called. Here is the code:

The -viewDidLoad method seems to execute the very first time the application starts, but -applicationDidBecomeActive: never gets called. I click on the home button and reactivate the application several times, but still no message from -applicationDidBecomeActive:.

what is the function that is called when the app is appearing?

Imagine the app is running and you press the iphone button (the phone button) and you exit the app. then you tap on the app again to enter the app. My problem is that when ever the user does this I want the viewWillAppear or viewDidAppear functions to be called, but unfortunately none of these functions gets called.
I want to know if these function won't get called, then what is the function that is called when the app is appearing again?

Look at UIApplicationDelegate. -applicationDidBecomeActive: is what you are looking for.
You can also register for notifications in your classes (UIApplicationDidBecomeActiveNotification). This may be simpler to implement than having your app delegate handle everything since you can have, for example, each view controller manage itself.
(Use NSNotificationCenter's -addObserver:selector:name:object: to register, don't forget to unregister during object cleanup, typically in -dealloc.)

Also, I've noticed that applicationWillResignActive gets called when an incoming SMS or call comes in but the user chooses to click Ok and continue. I don't want my app to take any action in these cases. I just want it to keep running without any intermediate cleanup since the user didn't exit the app. So, I would think it makes more sense to do cleanup work just in applicationDidEnterBackground.
I would appreciate your input on best practices to follow on choosing which delegates to implement for waking up and going to sleep as well as considering events like being interrupted by SMS/calls.

When waking up i.e. relaunching an app (either through springboard, app switching or URL) applicationWillEnterForeground: is called. It is only executed once when the app becomes ready for use, after being put into the background, while applicationDidBecomeActive: may be called multiple times after launch. This makes applicationWillEnterForeground: ideal for setup that needs to occur just once after relaunch.

I was still a bit confused with Dano's answer so I did a little test to get the flow of events in certain scenarios for my reference, but it might be useful to you too. This is for apps that DO NOT use UIApplicationExitsOnSuspend in their info.plist. This was conducted on an iOS 8 simulator + confirmed with iOS 7 device. Please excuse Xamarin's event handler names. They are very similar.

Yes, DidEnterBackground is called twice on iOS7 device. Both times UIApplication state is Background. However, iOS 8 simulator does not. This needs testing on iOS 8 device. I will update my answer when I get my hand on it, or someone else could confirm.

In iOS 8+ there is a subtle but important difference for taking phone call.
