So I am running through the Django polls tutorial. Trying to get the admin site to work for me. I can load it up and it looks great then I click on polls and then add a poll. Then I enter the name and the pub_date and time. Then I hit the save button and I get this big long error:
DatabaseError at /admin/pollsTest/poll/add/
(1146, "Table 'mydb.django_admin_log' doesn't exist")
I have been following the tutorial to the T. I have django.contrib.admin in the installed_apps file. I ran a syncdb. I edited the urls.py file to include all the admin code. And still no luck. Am I missing something obvious?
I have opened up my sql database and in fact the table does not exist. So I think somehow the syncdb command is not going through. Also when I run the syncdb command the output from the command line says:
...File "C:\Python27\lib\site-packages\MySWLdb\connections.py", line 36, in defaulterrorhandler raiseclass, errorvalue django.db.utils.DatabaseError: (1050, "Table 'polls_poll' already exists")
Which makes sense. the syncdb is only supposed to add tables that don't currently exist right? Am I supposed to get that kind of an error (like some django module is catching it and taking care of it)? I feel like it may be hitting this error and then crashing.
Happens if you run manage.py syncdb before adding django.contrib.admin to installed_apps. Just run syncdb again to fix.
Cheers!

In our app, we have Sidekiq and have modified the sidekiq.rb file to have it require authentication to view the page.
sidekiq.rb
Sidekiq::Web.use(Rack::Auth::Basic) do |user, password|
[user, password] == [ENV['SIDEKIQ_USER'], ENV['SIDEKIQ_PASSWORD']]
end
We want to have an error page set up for whenever the ENVs above are missing it will let us know specifically that the missing ENVs are the issue.
Solution 1: check the Sidekiq web code, open its base controller class and write a before action to render an error page when error happens.
Solution 2: write a conditional route, show the error page when error happens
Solution 3: throw errors in sidekiq.rb, so your server wont startup successfully, you will not need an error page anymore. I think the last one is the best, because this is just internal page to be viewed by few people, and probably only you, its better to find the problem as soon as possible.
I have a weird problem with activeadmin. Randomly and unexpectedly some data on a resource not showed (like it has benn empty in DB). When I check the DB, all data it is on db and it is correct.
Also the data when take some .json resource is empty too.
The only solution I found for this problem is restart nginx, but it is a problem because the client not see the information on the system.
I check the logs, but I do not see any relevant information. Is there any way to get information about it for solve this kind of problems?
System versions:
Rails 5.1.3
ruby 2.2.5p319 (2016-04-26 revision 54774) [x86_64-linux]
nginx/1.10.3 Phusion_Passenger/5.1.4
Finally I found the problem but I do not understand what is wrong on it....
This are the involucrated files:
https://gist.github.com/cpfarher/bfde79dd9c3772575b03712c0a397110
The problem occured when you open the route: lines/1/edit action. After open it, data on https://gist.github.com/cpfarher/bfde79dd9c3772575b03712c0a397110#file-admin_recipe-rb is not showed.
If you change de sentence "select distinct" on line:
https://gist.github.com/cpfarher/bfde79dd9c3772575b03712c0a397110#file-recipe_fail-rb-L10
all works fine, the field on https://gist.github.com/cpfarher/bfde79dd9c3772575b03712c0a397110#file-admin_recipe-rb-L13 showed ok. But, if you use the clause with select distinct, the field it is not showed....
On the other hand if you use the file: https://gist.github.com/cpfarher/bfde79dd9c3772575b03712c0a397110#file-recipe_ok-rb instead of https://gist.github.com/cpfarher/bfde79dd9c3772575b03712c0a397110#file-recipe_fail-rb all works fine.... :|
Context:
I pulled the most recent code from the repository and tried to make sure that the changes I was about to push up were going to work with that version of the code. This is a Ruby on Rails application. Also worth noting is the fact that when running the main application that I pulled from on the web, this error does not show up. But if I run my branch or the main branch cloned onto my environment, the error always shows up for every url I try. So it is on my end.
Problem:
As soon as I go to localhost:3000, I get the following error:
NoMethodError in HomeController#index
undefined method `-#' for #<ActionDispatch::Response:0x64fd460>
What I've Tried:
I have asked my question on the #rubyonrails IRC channel and nobody was able to determine what was going on through the Full Trace (I haven't posted it here because I wasn't sure what was the best way to do that on here; it didn't look very good in the code block or block quote). I have looked at my HomeController's index method, which is defined as such:
def index
#groups = #current_user.groups
#things = Thing.where(:group_id => #groups.map{|e|e.id})
end
I have also Googled around and haven't found what I need to fix the problem.
What I've Learned So Far:
-# is an operator. Some people may receive a similar error in assuming that Ruby has the shortcut to
variable = variable + 1
that a lot of other languages have:
variable++
Here is an example of that case: Undefined method `+#' for false:FalseClass (NoMethodError) ruby
Question:
Does anyone have any further suggestions on how to find the issue here? Also, if I could easily put the Full Trace on here, formatted in an aesthetically pleasing manner, would someone tell me how? I'm at a loss with this one :(
Update (2/8/2013):
It seems that the issue does not necessarily reside in the HomeController nor home/index.html.erb View. I have attempted to access ANY url with a valid action and the same error occurs with "NoMethodError in..." changing to the corresponding [...]Controller#index.
Update (2/9/2013):
Since this error happens no matter what url I try to navigate to, I decided to look in the routes.rb file in the config folder. I ran my server through rubymine instead of the command line this time, which made it a little easier to read for me. I started looking through all the spit out and I noticed an interested line that consisted of:
["private-key looking thing"] [127.0.0.1] Started GET "/" for 127.0.0.1 at 2013-02-09 18:20:52 -0700
It seems like there is a syntactical error in routes.rb (that's my best guess at this point). This does not explain why this only is an issue on my local environment with the same code sets, but what else do I have to go off of?
Does anyone have any suggested things to be on the look out for while I sift through this file? Not really sure what to be looking for as far as errors are concerned. Rubymines inspection stuff converted all my double quotes to single quotes and doesn't really have anything else to complain about.
Thanks in advance,
Jake Smith
I am guessing it might as well be an syntactical error in the corresponding view page Home/index.html.haml .. I am suspecting there is unintended '-' in front of variable call. I tried to simulate a similar scenario in my rails platform and see following page on browser
undefined method `-#' for false:FalseClass
Correct lines of code
%h1 All Movies
= "filtervalue=#{#isFilterOld}"
= "Sortvalue=#{#isSortOld}"
Edited to simulate the error (observe the - in front of isFilterOld variable)
%h1 All Movies
= "filtervalue=#{-#isFilterOld}"
= "Sortvalue=#{#isSortOld}"
I have fixed the issue!
What fixed it:
Go to the directory where your gems are (for me that was C:\RailsInstaller\Ruby1.9.3\lib\ruby\gems\1.9.1)
Delete all gems except for bundler
Make sure you delete the gems from the /cache/, /gems/, and /specifications/ folders (I just deleted them from the /gems/ folder at first and bundle install indicated that it could still find the gems)
Run bundle install
Further Inquiry:
Does anybody have any idea why this worked? I don't know if at this point I can narrow down which gem was causing the issue because the app is working now (I can visit all the urls with corresponding views). If the issue comes up again, I will delete gems one by one to nail down which one was at least causing the issue for me. But if anyone has any insight on this, a more detailed answer would be greatly appreciated by many more people than just me, I think. Thanks to all who helped thus far!
I would very much like to use the mongo geoNear command as discussed here.
Here is the command I entered in my rails console with the accompanying error message.
MongoMapper.database.command({ 'geoNear' => "trips", 'near' => [45,45]})
Mongo::OperationFailure: Database command 'geoNear' failed:
(errmsg: 'more than 1 geo indexes :('; ok: '0.0').
I can not make sense of the error message, it is supposedly impossible to have more than 1 geo index and I am certain that I have only created one.
Based on this stackoverflow question I believe I am wording the query correctly. Does anyone understand that error message? How would I go about destroying and recreating my indexes?
I am using rails 3.1 with mongodb v2.0 and the mongo ruby gem v1.5.1.
I really asked this too soon, maybe I should delete it? Somehow there were in fact too many geo indexes, because deleting the index and recreating it fixed the problem.
MongoMapper.database.collection('trips').drop_indexes
Trip.ensure_index [[:route, '2d']]
I'm having trouble debugging cucumber steps due to unique conditions of the testing environment. I wish there was a step that could pause a selenium test and let me take over.
E.g.
Scenario: I want to take over here
Given: A bunch of steps have already run
When: I'm stuck on an error
Then: I want to take control of the mouse
At that point I could interact with the application exactly as if I had done all the previous steps myself after running rails server -e test
Does such a step exist, or is there a way to make it happen?
You can integrate ruby-debug into your Cucumber tests. Nathaniel Ritmeyer has directions here and here which worked for me. You essentially require ruby-debug, start the debugger in your environment file, and then put "breakpoint" where ever you want to see what's going on. You can both interact with the browser/application and see the values of your ruby variables in the test. (I'm not sure whether it'll let you see the variables in your rails application itself - I'm not testing against a rails app to check that).
I came up with the idea to dump the database. It doesn't let you continue work from the same page, but if you have the app running during the test, you can immediately act on the current state of things in another browser (not the one controlled by Selenium).
Here is the step:
When /I want to take control/i do
exec "mysqldump -u root --password=* test > #{Rails.root}/support/snapshot.sql"
end
Because it is called by exec, DatabaseCleaner has no chance to truncate tables, so actually it's irrelevant that the command is a database dump. You don't have to import the sql to use the app in its current state, but it's there if you need it.
My teammate has done this using selenium, firebug a hook (#selenium_with_firebug)
Everything he learned came from this blogpost:
http://www.allenwei.cn/tips-add-firebug-extension-to-capybara/
Add the step
And show me the page
Where you want to interact with it
Scenario: I want to take over here
Given: A bunch of steps have already run
When: I'm stuck on an error
Then show me the page
use http://www.natontesting.com/2009/11/09/debugging-cucumber-tests-with-ruby-debug/
Big thank you to #Reed G. Law for the idea of dumping the database. Then loading it into development allowed me to determine exactly why my cucumber feature was not impacting database state as I had expected. Here's my minor tweak to his suggestion:
When /Dump the database/i do
`MYSQL_PWD=password mysqldump -u root my_test > #{Rails.root}/snapshot.sql`
# To replicate state in development run:
# `MYSQL_PWD=password mysql -u root my_development < snapshot.sql`
end
You can also use the following in feature/support/debugging.rb to let you step through the feature one step at a time:
# `STEP=1 cucumber` to pause after each step
AfterStep do |scenario|
next unless ENV['STEP']
unless defined?(#counter)
puts "Stepping through #{scenario.title}"
#counter = 0
end
#counter += 1
print "At step ##{#counter} of #{scenario.steps.count}. Press Return to"\
' execute...'
STDIN.getc
end
