I'm getting a routing error: No route matches [POST] "/students/1" that I can't figure out. Here are the details.
view code:
<% #students.each do |student| %>
.
.
<td><%= link_to 'Show', student %></td>
<td><%= link_to 'Edit', edit_student_path(student) %></td>
<td><%= link_to 'Select Subjects', select_path(student) %></td> # error occurs here
In my students controller:
def select
.
.
end
routes.rb:
HomeSchool::Application.routes.draw do
resources :notes
resources :assignments
resources :subjects do
resources :assignments, :only => [:create, :index, :new]
end
resources :students
resources :resources
match "students/:id/select" => "students#select", :as => :select

Any suggestions? I'm having a really hard time grasping exactly how routing in rails is supposed to work and I have yet to find any kind of treatise on it but I'm pretty sure that having no method listed for my select route is at least part of my problem.
Thanks,
Lon
Try removing the match in your routes.rb file and change your students resource to this:
resources :students do
member do
get 'select'
end
end
Also update your view to call select_student_path(student).
This happens because of your routes.rb file. It doesn't have a callback for post method in "/students/new"
To correct this.
Go to routes.rb and add post 'students/new' to: 'students#new' before end.
and check rails routes. you will find a routing path there for the post.

I don't understand this error and how to resolve it.
I already read all posts about this error but can't find the solution..
Finally the solution was to with draw theses lines from routes.rb :
if defined?(DashboardManifest)
namespace :admin do
DashboardManifest::DASHBOARDS.each do |dashboard_resource|
resources dashboard_resource
end
root controller: DashboardManifest::ROOT_DASHBOARD, action: :index
end
end
I am having troubles with routes. I have defined routes like this:
resource :demo
resource :subjects
resource :pages
resource :sections
when i do
rake routes
it doesn't show right urls. it shows something like
Prefix Verb URI Pattern Controller#Action
root GET / demo#index
demo POST /demo(.:format) demos#create
new_demo GET /demo/new(.:format) demos#new
edit_demo GET /demo/edit(.:format) demos#edit
GET /demo(.:format) demos#show
PATCH /demo(.:format) demos#update
PUT /demo(.:format) demos#update
DELETE /demo(.:format) demos#destroy

GET /subjects(.:format) subjects#show
PATCH /subjects(.:format) subjects#update
PUT /subjects(.:format) subjects#update
DELETE /subjects(.:format) subjects#destroy
pages POST /pages(.:format) pages#create
new_pages GET /pages/new(.:format) pages#new
edit_pages GET /pages/edit(.:format) pages#edit
GET /pages(.:format) pages#show
PATCH /pages(.:format) pages#update
PUT /pages(.:format) pages#update
DELETE /pages(.:format) pages#destroy
sections POST /sections(.:format) sections#create
new_sections GET /sections/new(.:format) sections#new
edit_sections GET /sections/edit(.:format) sections#edit
GET /sections(.:format) sections#show
PATCH /sections(.:format) sections#update
PUT /sections(.:format) sections#update
DELETE /sections(.:format) sections#destroy
GET /:controller(/:action(/:id(.:format))) :controller#:action
none of the urls has :id in them. what i might be doing wrong? It still sends id to controller but i am having hard time calling index and show methods as both of them are mapped to -----#show
This is because you are using singular resource, e.g. resource :foo. When you use singular resource, you don't get the :id. In order to get the :id in the parameter, you should change the resources declarations to plural resources:
resources :demoes
resources :subjects
resources :pages
resources :sections
I regularly use shallow routes on nested resources, so thought I missed something simple, but don't see why I'm getting a routing error for students#show.
I have a School with two nested resources: Courses and Students. All actions work on Courses. The :index, :new and :create actions work for Students.
Why do I get a routing error for /students/3 instead of being routed to students#show as indicated in rake routes?
exception on /students/3 :

controllers and views
I inspected, but since this is a routing exception, I don't think this code is reached. If you tell me otherwise, I can add them.
libraries
I'm using cancan with authlogic, but have never experienced a routing error from these.
Yes, it was something simple. I made a wrong assumption that a routing error means the controller and views aren't reached....and this "genius" forgot the logs have the full stack trace:
Completed 500 Internal Server Error in 89ms
ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches {:controller=>"students"}):
app/views/shared/_breadcrumbs.html.erb:27:in `_app_views_shared__breadcrumbs_html_erb___658518109680707361_70357170598800'

app/controllers/students_controller.rb:19:in `show'
My breadcrumbs was attempting to construct a link to students#index which doesn't exist. The breadcrumbs try to handle this case (line 25) but the check fails for nested resources:
25: <% elsif controller.class.action_methods.include?('index') %>
26: <li>
27: <%= link_to controller_name.titleize, :controller => controller_name, :action => 'index' %>
28: <span class="divider">/</span>
29: </li>
I have the following routes in my app:
GET /admin/comments(.:format) {:controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"index"}
admin_comments POST /admin/comments(.:format) {:controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"create"}
new_admin_comment GET /admin/comments/new(.:format) {:controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"new"}
GET /admin/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"show"}
PUT /admin/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"update"}
admin_comment DELETE /admin/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"destroy"}
edit_admin_comment GET /admin/comments/:id/edit(.:format) {:controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"edit"}
admin_approve_comment /admin/comments/approve/:id {:module=>"admin", :controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"approve"}
admin_reject_comment /admin/comments/reject/:id {:module=>"admin", :controller=>"admin/comments", :action=>"reject"}
which is declared as:
namespace "admin" do
resources :comments
match '/comments/approve/:id' => 'comments#approve', :as => "approve_comment", :module => "admin"
match '/comments/reject/:id' => 'comments#reject', :as => "reject_comment", :module => "admin"
end
and a functional test like this:
context "a POST to :approve" do
setup do
comment = Factory(:comment)
sign_in Factory(:admin)
post :approve, :id => comment.id
end
should respond_with :success
end
However, when I run this I get:
test: a POST to :approve should respond with 200. (Admin::CommentsControllerTest):
ActionController::RoutingError: No route matches {:action=>"approve", :id=>339, :controller=>"admin/comments"}
What's wrong here? What stupid mistake am I making?
These routes look like member routes to me. So routing this way
namespace "admin" do
resources :comments do
member do
get :approve
get :reject
end
end
end
This will generate routes like /admin/comments/:id/approve . This is the rails way as far i know.
I think it's better to put match before resources. Because it's not check if it's good or not.
I have a primary model for my project, Place.rb with a places_controller, and I've currently got it exactly the way I want for the users end of my project. With a nested photos controller, review, etc.
I want now to create a management resource which is mostly just an alias for Places, with its own nested resources, some of them overlapping, some of them new.
I tried creating a new controller for it called Manage, but I'm having a hard time with routes. I'm not quite sure the hangup is, but I figure I'm doing something very wrong. I had little difficulty when I was using Places as controller to a real model and nesting other resources below it.
But for example trying to create a new record for a nested resource doesn't route correctly.
I can get a route path like new_manage_room_path(#place) for a link_to to work fine. But
for creating a New announcement in a form:
form_for manage_room_path(#place) doesn't work correctly given a valid id. I've tried many other combinations supplying the object and :url.
Should I avoid using a separate controller and just create an alias or what is the special routing for this purpose?

Try:
<% form_for #new_room, :url => manage_rooms_path(#place) do |f| %>
or maybe it will work this way:
<% form_for manage_rooms_path(#place, #new_room) do |f| %>
#new_room is new instance of Room model, so in controller add:
#new_room = Room.new
