If you are in Ubuntu do
sudo apt-get install qt4-dev-tools libqt4-dev libqt4-core libqt4-gui
If you are on Mac
brew install qt
and then
gem install capybara-webkit -v '0.11.0'
For Ubuntu 16.04
sudo apt-get install qt-sdk
Followed by
gem install capybara-webkit -v '1.11.0'
or replace with whatever version you want to install.
You are probably missing the qt libraries. See the capybara-webkit wiki for instructions on installing them for your platform.
brew install qt will only install (as of August 4, 2015) 4.8.6, which gives you this message.
WARNING: The next major version of capybara-webkit will require at least version 5.0 of Qt. You're using version 4.8.6.
Instead, if you do
brew install qt5
brew link --force qt5
you won't get that error.
On El Capitan or Yosemite, you may need to do
brew install qt55
according to the doc here.
For Ubuntu 20.04 you can install qt5-default package
sudo apt-get install g++ qt5-default libqt5webkit5-dev gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-x
Then install the gem with the required version:
gem install capybara-webkit -v '1.11.0'
On fedora is a bit more complicated. I did the next which takes a while:
$ sudo dnf install make gcc-c++ gdb qt5*-devel qt-creator
$ export QMAKE=/usr/bin/qmake-qt5
$ gem install capybara-webkit

I am trying to run one project on my local machine. I installed Ruby and Rails on my Mac OS system. It is working properly. I can create a new project and can run it properly without any error, but when I try to run the existing project it says that we have to bundle install. When I run that command I get the following error:

When I run gem install rmagick -v '2.13.2' it gives me the following error:

For Ubuntu, I used the ff. based on this link:

On Mac you can try this:

For Linux Fedora, I got same error and fixed with below two commands:
yum install ImageMagick

First, make sure you've installed Imagemagick :
$ sudo apt-get install imagemagick
Now, it can build the gem native extension.
Then, install the Rmagick gem :

May be you are installing ImageMagick version 7.x.x which will generate different folder names in your usr/lib/local/include/ImageMagick7.x.x folder.
E.g.
In ImageMagick6.x.x version we have magick, wand named folders, where in ImageMagick7.x.x version have named this MagickCore , MagickWand . So this updation is causing the problem in some gem installation like here. Which is using
magick/some_header.h or wand/some_header.h (Means they are not updated with the new 7.x.x ImageMagick version).That's why we are getting this error :

Solution
Install the ImageMagick6.x.x version in your system from the official site : https://www.imagemagick.org/download/ and install it using this commands(after extract zip/tar) :
./configure
make
make install
Then do
gem install rmagick
It will work.
As per the error log it looks like "Magick-config" is missing.
You need to install ImageMagik or GraphicsMagick. These are the commands you should follow which is taken from RMagik Documentation:
1) Go to http://www.imagemagick.org or http://www.graphicsmagick.org and download the latest version of the software to a temporary directory. the extract them :
- tar xvzf ImageMagick.tar.gz
- cd ImageMagick-x.x.x
- ./configure --disable-static --with-modules --without-perl --without-magick-plus-plus --with-quantum-depth=8
- make
- sudo make install
- sudo gem install rmagick
Solution for Ubuntu:
sudo apt-get install imagemagick

I had this same issue when setting up a Rails 6 application in Ubuntu 20.04.
Here's how I solved it
RMagick is an interface between the Ruby programming language and the ImageMagick image processing library. So we first need to install development libraries for ImageMagick:
Step 1:
On Ubuntu, you can run:
sudo apt-get install libmagickwand-dev
On Centos, you can run:
sudo yum install gcc ImageMagick-devel make which
On Arch Linux, you can run:
pacman -Syy pkg-config imagemagick
On Alpine Linux, you can run:
apk add pkgconfig imagemagick imagemagick-dev imagemagick-libs
or you can run if you would like to use ImageMagick 6:
apk add pkgconfig imagemagick6 imagemagick6-dev imagemagick6-libs
On macOS, you can run:
brew install pkg-config imagemagick
or you can run if you would like to use ImageMagick 6:
brew install pkg-config imagemagick#6
On Windows:
Install the latest Ruby+Devkit package which you can get from RubyInstaller for Windows.
You might need to configure PATH environment variable to where the compiler is located.
(Ex: set PATH=C:\Ruby27-x64\msys64\usr\bin;C:\Ruby27-x64\msys64\mingw64\bin;%PATH%)
Download ImageMagick-7.XXXX-Q16-x64-dll.exe (not, ImageMagick-7.XXXX-Q16-x64-static.exe) binary from Windows Binary Release, or you can download ImageMagick 6 from Windows Binary Release.
Install ImageMagick. You need to turn on checkboxes Add application directory to your system path and Install development headers and librarries for C and C++ in an installer for RMagick.
Step 2:
Install the RMagick ruby gem:
gem install rmagick
Step 3:
Now you can add the RMagick ruby gem to your Gemfile:
gem 'rmagick', '~> 4.1'
Note: As of this writing the latest version is 4.1
Step 4:
Finally, you can run bundle install to install the gem to your application.

Usually, the solution is:
sudo apt-get install ruby-dev
Or, if that doesn't work, depending on your ruby version, run something like:
sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.1-dev
Should fix your problem.
Still not working? Try the following after installing ruby-dev:
sudo apt-get install make
For WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) you need install build-essential package:
sudo apt install build-essential
Just finished a 2 hour wild goose chase trying to solve this. None of the posted answers worked for me. Im on a Mac (Mojave Version 10.14.6, Xcode Version 11.3).
It turns out the ruby file headers were missing so i had to run open /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/Packages/macOS_SDK_headers_for_macOS_10.14.pkg
That didnt work for me at first because the version of CommandLineTools i had installed did not have the "Packages" folder. So i uninstalled and reinstalled like this:
rm -rf /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools
xcode-select --install
Then i ran the previous command again:
open /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/Packages/macOS_SDK_headers_for_macOS_10.14.pkg
After install the error was fixed!
I had the same issue trying to install jquery-rails. The fix was
sudo apt-get install zlibc zlib1g zlib1g-dev
For MacOS users:

In case anyone in the future had this problem, I'm using a Mac and just had to install the Command Line Tools using 'xcode-select --install'
I found that I needed to install another version of ruby. So running the command
$ sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.1-dev
and then attempt to install the extension
If you run into issues where it is telling you that you don't have g++ you can run the following command to install it
$ sudo apt-get install g++
Make sure ruby-dev is installed
Make sure make is installed
If you still get the error, look for suggested packages. If you are trying to install something like gem install pg you will also need to install the lib libpq-dev (sudo apt-get install libpq-dev).

What ended up working for me after a few hours of pain..
if you're running brew..
brew install ruby
in the terminal output/log, identify the path where ruby was installed, brew suggests 'You may want to add this to your PATH', so that's what we'll do. For example, mine is
/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/3.0.0/bin
Add this to your path by running (omitting braces)
echo 'export PATH"{the_path_you_found_above}:$PATH"' >> ~/.bash_profile
then update your environment by running
source ~/.bash_profile
now, try running your install, i.e.,
sudo gem install middleman
If you are a mac user you must need to update the clang version being used
I burnt hours searching this and installed uninstalled xcode commandline tools but it didn't help.
I ran gcc -v and Apple clang version 11.0.0 (clang-1100.0.33.8 was the output.
Then I ran xcode-select -s /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/ and clang version was updated to Apple clang version 12.0.0 (clang-1200.0.32.29).
bundle install was successful after that.

I was making a word search app and I had to install cocoapods and after formatting my mac and reinstalling xcode, I still got the error when I wanted to install cocoapods.
And the solution for this was the following:
It looks like CocoaPods 1.9.0, the latest version as of this writing, depends on a newer version of Ruby than 2.3.7. But macOS Mojave only includes Ruby 2.3.7, so you have a few different options.
Upgrade to macOS Catalina and get Ruby 2.6.3
Use Ruby Version Manager to install a newer version of Ruby
Install an older version of CocoaPods
sudo gem install cocoapods -v 1.8.4
I did 3:
sudo gem install cocoapods -v 1.8.4
In Mac, for me this works:
CONFIGURE_OPTS="--enable-shared" rbenv install 2.2.2
After some search for a solution, it turns out the -dev package is needed, not just ruby1.8. So if you have ruby1.9.1 doing
sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.1-dev
or to install generic ruby version, use (as per #lamplightdev comment):
sudo apt-get install ruby-dev
should fix it.
Try to locate mkmf to see if the file is actually there.

Probably, it can't build mysql2 native extension.
If you're using Ubuntu 14.04 or newer, try sudo apt-get install ruby-mysql libmysqlclient-dev.
On older versions of Ubuntu install this: sudo apt-get install libmysql-ruby libmysqlclient-dev
On OS X: brew install mysql

I was using LInux 16 Cinnamon and got that error message. I used "Resure"'s, solution sudo apt-get install libmysql-ruby libmysqlclient-dev
then ran bundle install for project.

Getting an error when trying to install the gem devise, the installation is stopping on

I'm running OSX 10.6.7 with Ruby under RVM.
I reinstalled the lastest version of xcode & reinstalled Ruby 64bit, Rails and all the gems.
I had the same problem installing under OSX 10.7.3. When installing the gem, my error message was:

Looks like the gem is looking for gcc-4.2 but I only had a file called gcc. Now since I had just installed the latest Xcode (4.3), I knew that my C compiler was compliant but the gem had gcc-4.2 hardcoded into it. So my solution was:
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/gcc /usr/bin/gcc-4.2
The linking worked like a charm.
Looks like there might be some info missing here - for me, this was due to a brew install of gcc. gcc was in /usr/bin, but not gcc-4.2. So I just did the following:
$ cd /usr/bin
$ sudo ln -s gcc gcc-4.2
which creates a link, gcc-4.2, which the gem is looking for that goes back to gcc.

It requires to install ruby-dev before installing bcrypt-ruby.

I'm using RVM & I kept having this issue whenever installing gems with native extensions (bcrypt-ruby, bson-ext, json, eventmachine, nokogiri, linecache19, etc.)

Only way I could finally get things working was to uninstall then re-install ruby.
rvm remove 1.9.2
rvm install 1.9.2

You only need use rvm (ruby version manager)
rvm uninstall 1.9.3
and then
rvm install 1.9.3
looks this error is on build of rvm 1.9.3, but uninstall and reinstalling fix the problem with bcrypt-ruby 3.0.1

Try rvm notes and see if it says you need to install anything.
If you are using version 1.8 the required packages for bcrypt are in the dev bundle. Try using

I was getting the same error and it got resolved after installing the libmagick9-dev library on ubuntu 11.

$ sudo apt-get install libmagickwand-dev or $ sudo apt-get install libmagick9-dev for ubuntu 11 or below.

you need the imagemagick libraries under ubuntu
$ sudo apt-get install libmagickwand-dev
it contains all missing libraires
then run bundle install command
I believe you need the Imagemagick libraries.

Initially, I came around to installing rmagick because it seemed to be a dependency when I tried installing libgtk2.0-dev. I was trying to install that package, because the RGtk2.0 is a requirement for using R package called rattle.
Anyway, none of the above solutions worked for me in installing in my Ubuntu 12.04. Even running sudo apt-get update first didn't seem to help, nor this related posting: Installing rmagick on Ubuntu
I eventually found what works is to troubleshoot using sudo aptitude rather than apt-get.

I recommend the technique of using aptitude to work through the package installation issue.
On Mac Os X, check if /opt/local/bin is in your PATH. If not:
export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH
sudo gem install rmagick
This worked for me!
I had an issue installing Rmagick gem version 2.13.2 on Debian Jessie. After fighting with the packages in the other answers, I upgraded the version of the Rmagick gem from 2.13.2 to the latest (2.16.0 at time of writing). This installed successfully.
bundle update rmagick
If you tried all solutions, of all posts of whole Internet, have installed and reinstalled many times all indicated packages in all Linux or Mac distributions/versions (even in Windows) and it still not working, close your terminal and open it again. Some times, even if your reload all shell environment, only after I reopen the terminal the bundle install was successfully completed.
After several days of searching, my problema was related to some missing libraries, and the one that get the gem installed was this one:
brew install pkg-config
after this I did my bundle install again and it worked.
