I'm trying to use will paginate with ajax, but I don't show the will_paginate buttons... instead I use a see more button, that makes an Ajax request and append the results to the page.
what I'm trying to do is disable this see more button if I hit the last page of records!!
Any idea how to know that the current page is the last page??

Accessing the #collection.total_pages method will give you the total number of pages currently being returned. You can use this to evaluate against your active page using the #collection.current_page method. This is still applicable if you're reloading your collection on each expansion.
The implementation will be to use the AJAX call to replace the HTML content if this evaluation is true.
You can use next_page condition
#collection.next_page.present?

I am trying to implement two pages. The first page being a selection of the items I want to show on the second page.
On my first page, I have done a selection of the items which I want to render.
On click of a button, 1. the ids of these items will be placed in an array and 2. the user will be redirected to a new page through:
window.location.replace("/schedule");
Right now, I want to achieve the following:
Do an ajax call through rails to get each of the array items. i.e. make an ajax calls to the urls of myclass/[id]. The id belonging to the items in the array.
I am not sure how I could get my array items from the current page to the next page or if there is a better way of achieving this. Any advice or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
Add :remote => true to your form. Then, app will render your action_name.js.erb view instead of action_name.html.erb. In js file you can put code, which will repleace div without redirection, f.e.
$('#div_id').html('<%= escape_javascript render(your_partial_name) %>');
You don't need to do anything special in partial and controller action, its all the same.
I am still pretty new to Rails and am working on a basic app and have run into a problem, which I can't seem to get around, sorry if this question has already been answered, but searching didn't yield me any results.
Basically I am creating an app that catalogues all of someones's clothes, Now the main page is the index page of everything they have logged, and each picture is linked to the show page where more information is revealed. I want to use AJAX to bring that show page to the side of the main index page. I am working off of another tutorial to figure this out but have run into a problem. On the initial load of my index page, I need to define a variable for that show page so that it can be rendered using a partial, but I can't use find(params[:id]) since the user hasn't selected anything yet. So my question is how do I set that initial value to either just the first item in the catalogue or not have anything appear, and then when someone does click the link, the sidebar shows the more detailed description of the piece of clothing.

But I think there's some problem with design of application.
You might have some luck working with the ruby gem 'PJAX'. Here is a screen cast showing you how to get that AJAX sidebar you want. Good luck
It sounds like you can just print the container element as normal, but leave it empty when the page is generated. Optionally, hide it via CSS. Then, when you load its content with AJAX, set it to visible or just populate it as normal.
Alternatively, if you really want to set it to the first item in the catalog (or in any ActiveRecord) you can use .first e.g. Products.first, and use that value to populate its initial contents.

I tried to use displaytag for pagination but my tables have images and there wasn't a way I could make displaytag work with images.
So now I have custom coded pagination which uses <s:subset> which works great so far except that I don't know how to make it go to another page.
Basically in <s:subset> I just want to change the start attribute and then refresh my JSP. My code evaluates the start attribute correctly with a given page number.
My s:subset tag is like below,
<s:subset source="pageableList.pagedList" count="pageableList.pageSize" start="pageableList.start" >
<s:iterator>
I think I want to use <s:url> to display my clickable page numbers but I'm having trouble there.
I have my page numbers in a list (which I evaluate in my action class right after my search completes), then in my JSP where I need to display the clickable page numbers, I iterate through the list, displaying the page numbers like below -
<s:iterator value="pageNumList" > | <a href='#'> <s:property/> </a> </s:iterator>
I guess I need to pass the clicked value of page number to the action class, then since the search results are in a list in the action class, without hitting the database again just display the results page with the new value of start attribute.
Any ideas how I might do that? I have been considering using a Decider attribute with <s:subset> but maybe there is a simpler way?

If you do not want to hit your DB again, cache the results of the initial query in RAM in your Action class (reference a static cache somewhere). Also, you don't have to go with a cache-all-or-nothing approach -- you can cache the first N pages and then when you near the end of the cache, fetch the rest. If you do it right, you can maintain minimum RAM footprint but preserve a snappy user experience that leverages user think time (depends on your app).
Specifically, I have a number of pages in my Rails app that use the same partial. In the action handler for each page I create an array object (e.g. #list_elements) based on a database query. Each page uses a different query so that each page has different list elements in it. At the top of each page I have a form_remote_tag containing an edit field, allowing the user to add a new element in a dynamic, AJAXy fashion (think something like Twitter 'What's happening' box).
My problem is that when the AJAX command fires I need to reload the list to include the newly added item, but the contents of the list were determined by a database query. I need to remember which query applies to the current page (i.e. controller action) so that I can run it again. I thought about storing something in the rails session structure but it seems like overkill - it's like storing the current page all the time.
Anybody done anything like this and have a nice Railsy way to achieve it?

Couldn't you just re-render the partial in your rjs template?
page[:div_element].replace_html :partial => 'partial'
If you perform the query and define the array in the controller action, then an ajax call will refresh that array.
Does anyone know how to make a search form (in rails) go directly to the first result, rather than a page of results?
Have the results limited to one and redirect to that result's page from your controller.
