I have a help screen that can be accessed from any other screen. The only button there is a "back" arrow. Right now it always goes back to the main screen. However, I need it to go back to which ever screen that was before it. I've hunted through stackoverflow and google but no luck.
EDIT
snippet of the code I'm using now:
appViewController *homeView = [[appViewController alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil];
homeView.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleCrossDissolve;
[self presentModalViewController:homeView animated:YES];
From the modal view controller that is being presented right now, make it dismiss itself when clicking the home button:
- (void)buttonClicked
{
[self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES];
}
On button click You can use.
[self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES];
Maybe this link will help you: How to navigate previous screen from camera view in iphone?
Its about navigation and how to remove the last screen.
Or use this in the click event of button.Create an instance of the view controller to be opened
EnterNameController *newEnterNameController = [[EnterNameController alloc] initWithNibName:#"EnterName" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
[[self navigationController] pushViewController:newEnterNameController animated:YES];

My iOS application using Objective C. It received a remote notification, when a user click it, it will open a particular view.
This view has a back button in the navigation tab. In normal scenarios can back to root view. However, when I open this view from a notification, cannot back to any view nor leaving the application.
Here is my spruce code:
1. from AppDelegate.m to open a particular view:
self.window = [[UIWindow alloc] initWithFrame:UIScreen.mainScreen.bounds];
UIStoryboard *storyboard = [UIStoryboard storyboardWithName:#"Main" bundle:nil];
UIViewController *viewAnnouncement =[storyboard instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:#"Announcement"];
self.window.rootViewController = viewAnnouncement;
[self.window makeKeyAndVisible];
Action function to back to previous view (in viewClass.m):
- (IBAction)onBtnBackClicked:(id)sender {
[self dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:nil];
}
I believe the problem is, when I open this view from a notification, no parent view to let it back to. Can anyone help me, when user open this view from a notification, whether it goes to a root view or back to the previous opening app
EDIT : The previous answer didn't take in count the fact that you were in AppDelegate. Maybe this answer is better.
Turn your [self dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:nil]
into :
UINavigationController *navigationController = [[UINavigationController alloc] init];
UIViewController *yourPreviousVC = [[UIViewController alloc] init];
[navigationController pushViewController:yourPreviousVC animated:YES];
If I'm wrong or if I missunderstood the question, do not hesitate to correct my answer.
Try this
Announcement *annouce = [[UIStoryboard storyboardWithName:#"Main" bundle:nil] instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:#"Announcement"];
HomeVC *home = [[UIStoryboard storyboardWithName:#"Main" bundle:nil] instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:#"HomeVC"];
[((UINavigationController *)self.window.rootViewController) setViewControllers:#[home,annouce] animated:YES];
And If app already open and you want to go previous page
Announcement *annouce = [[UIStoryboard storyboardWithName:#"Main" bundle:nil] instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:#"Announcement"];
UIViewController *visibleView = ((UINavigationController *)window.rootViewController).visibleViewController;
[((UINavigationController *)self.window.rootViewController) setViewControllers:#[visibleView,annouce] animated:YES];
I found the solution. My app has multiple views which I can go from a navigation list. When I want to back to main view, I just dismiss the current view.
Cuurently, a view is opened when I click a notification and I can't simply dismiss this view, Coz it considered as root view.
What I did to solve it, I connect my view (Announcement) by segue to main view, and set an identifier (for example: "leaveAnnouncementPage". Then, in your class just call this function in back button's fnction to back to the main view:
[self performSegueWithIdentifier:#"leaveAnnouncementPage" sender:self];

Thank you guys for your help, and all the best
This is going to take some explaining... So I'll do it in order:
I have a navigation controller where the rootViewController is called TipsCollectionViewController.
I have a UserViewController that's loaded as a popup:
UserViewController * userView = [[UserViewController alloc] initWithNibName:#"UserView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
[userView setUEmail:email];
[self presentPopupViewController:userView animationType:MJPopupViewAnimationSlideTopBottom];
I then have another popup that loads on top of THAT popup:
Place *p = [placeArray objectAtIndex:indexPath.row];
DetailPlaceViewController *pvc = [[DetailPlaceViewController alloc] init];
[pvc setPlace:p];
NSLog(#"%#", p.PName);
[self presentPopupViewController:pvc animationType:MJPopupViewAnimationSlideTopBottom];
Now there's a reason I've done this: the AppDelegate features a Navigation controller and previously I loaded the UserView like this:
[self.navigationController presentViewController:userView animated:YES completion:nil];
But this meant that the UserView would load on the iPhone but not on the iPad for some odd reason. But when I switched it to the popup view it worked fine.
So now I load both the UserView and the DetailPlaceView in a popup... but now it CLOSES on the iPad but not on the iPhone.
Here's the code for closing the detail view:
- (void) didTapBackButton:(id)sender {
NSLog(#"View Controller Number: %lu", (unsigned long)self.navigationController.viewControllers.count);
if(self.navigationController.viewControllers.count > 1) {
[self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES];
NSArray *stack = self.navigationController.viewControllers;
TipCollectionViewController *tipsVC = stack[stack.count-1];
[tipsVC.collectionView reloadData];
}
I know there's a better way to handle this whole thing... but what should I be doing differently?
UPDATE
If I switch it back to:
[self.navigationController pushViewController:userview animated:YES];
...for the UserView on the iPhone and:
[self.navigationController pushViewController:pvc animated:YES];
...for the view that loads after that, then the UserView will load... but the next viewcontroller (the DetailPlaceViewController) won't load. I think that's my main problem. I could probably dismiss the second view controller at that point if I could get it to load. Any ideas?
[self presentPopupViewController:pvc animationType:MJPopupViewAnimationSlideTopBottom];
if you are using this,presentPopupViewController is used to display like modal view which cant be dismissed without any custom cancellation action.
To use popOverViewController method, use pushViewController. Then that one you can dismiss by this technique.
Ultimately all I had to do was switch:
[self.navigationController pushViewController:pvc animated:YES];
to:
[self presentViewController:pvc animated:YES];
And it works. It opens and closes the view and everything works as it should.
I'm getting a warning on the DetailView once you click an item:
Presenting view controllers on detached view controllers is discouraged <UserViewController: 0x16e02020>
So I'll wait a couple of days to accept my answer. Otherwise, despite the warning, it seems to be working.
In my app after pressing the login button in my loginViewController, it push to front viewController of my SWRevealViewController. In my RearViewController I have the sign out button. When I press it it should pop to the back viewController again (LoginViewController). But even though I set the button click event like this it doesnt navigate to the loginViewController.
-(void)signOutClick :(id)sender
{
[self performSelectorInBackground:#selector(moveToLoginView) withObject:nil];
}
-(void)moveToLoginView
{
[self.navigationController popToRootViewControllerAnimated:YES];
}
But when I swipe the view it gose to the back view.I want to disable that swipe feature to the back view. And I want to go to the back view when click on the sign out button in my RearViewController. How can I do that? Please help me.
Thanks
I am not sure but instead of using
[self.navigationController popToRootViewControllerAnimated:YES];
try using,
[self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES];
And to stop swipe gesture you can use code like,
- (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated
{
[super viewWillAppear:animated];
self.revealViewController.panGestureRecognizer.enabled = NO;
}
You need to reset the top view controller if you want to perform these kind of actions off of a click. E.g.
get an instance of the ECSlidingViewController
ECSlidingViewController *slidingController = self.slidingViewController;
get the view controller you wish to be on the top
UIStoryboard *mainStoryboard = [UIStoryboard storyboardWithName:#"Main" bundle:nil];
UIViewController *vc = [mainStoryboard instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:#"mainViewController"];
UINavigationController *nc = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:vc];
set the topViewController property
slidingController.topViewController = nc;
[slidingController resetTopViewAnimated:NO];
I have an app that I migrated over from iOS 5 to iOS 6 and am having trouble with the UINavigationController not displaying correctly.
In my app, the user must login and they are presented that login screen in a modal view after pressing a button.
WelcomeViewController.m
- (IBAction)signInButtonSelected:(id)sender
{
LoginViewController *loginViewController = [[LoginViewController alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil];
[self.navigationController presentViewController:loginViewController animated:YES completion:^{}];
}
The view loads correctly and has lets the user enter their login credentials. However, when they press the login button, the next view is presented and it SHOULD have a UINavigationBar at the top, except it doesn't. If I quit the app and restart it, the UINavigationBar shows up in that view properly. I have not a clue as to why going from the login view to the logged in screen hides the navigation controller.
Here is the code that is executed when the login button is pressed that loads the next view:
LoginViewController.m
WallViewController *wallViewController = [[WallViewController alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil];
[(UINavigationController *)self.presentingViewController pushViewController:wallViewController animated:YES];
[self.presentingViewController dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:nil];
If anyone can shed some light on to why this is happening that would be great!
Thanks!
Figured it out. In my App Delegate, I had placed:
navController.navigationBar.hidden = YES;
And it would hide the navigation bar after a user would login. Not exactly sure why this in the app delegate would affect a view later on down the line. But once it was removed, it works perfectly!
Thanks for the help!
i have more viewcontroller that start from rootviewcontroller.
So for example i start with controller A so pass to B and go to C the third.
Normally to come back we need to push back on left top.
Instead i want to know if is possible instead use back button by code come previus view controller that in this case is B.
to go on the next i use this
ViewController *sc = [[ViewController alloc] initWithNibName:#"ViewController" bundle:nil];
[[self navigationController] pushViewController:sc animated:YES];
Simples
[[self navigationController] popViewControllerAnimated:YES];
See UINavigationController popViewControllerAnimated:(BOOL)animated
