Prerequisites for developing for iPad iOS 5.1.1? - ios

Seems like every time i go thru a required update of either the mac OS or the device iOS, i always end up getting very frustrated to the point of giving up on the iphone/ipad development altogether.
I just recently bought an ipad2 (iOS 5.1.1). And i noticed that my old Xcode 4 didnt support this iOS version. So now I just upgraded to XCode 4.2. But now I am still required to downgrade the iPad2 iOS to 5.0 (unfortunately). Now if I wanted to develop for iOS 5.1, then I must upgrade to XCode 4.3.2, which means I also need to upgrade my OS to Lion (i currently have Snow Leopard).
I believe these are the prerequisites that i was able to straighten out. Please correct me if Im wrong.
Finally, if my assessment here is correct, then I do need to download the iOS 5.0 firmware. I am unable to find a link to this anywhere on apple's site (everything is for 5.1). Anybody know where i can get the download link for older iOS's ?
Thanks!

When you go to your Xcode organizer, could you connect your iPad and select "Use For development" button that appears with your device in the organizer?
If the answer is "yes", then you can develop for iOS 4 and just do your testing on your iPad running OS 5.1.1.
If the answer is "no", then you should update your Macintosh to Lion and your Xcode to 4.3.X (which will include the iOS 5.0 & 5.1 SDK).
If you want to "downgrade" your iPad to iOS 5.0 (and good luck with that), you can find a download link in this article.
But don't stress too much. Once you get accustomed to development, you can hopefully keep up with the times (and the frequent OS & Xcode updates) pretty easily.

How to prepare iOS 4.2 app from Xcode 3.2 for iPhone 5 support?

I have this app that I wrote more than 1,5 year ago. It was my first project in iOS, so I was working on wht was given to me - in this case it was Xcode 3.2 and iOS 4.2. Now I want to submit this app to AppStore, but thing is that as of 1st May Apple requires developers to support new iPhone 5 screen resolution and as a result also I have to provide iPhone 5 screens for submitting proces.
Any advice how to solve this situation? Rewriting all classes with screen bounds or throw it away and use Xcode 4.2 or change for iOS 5.0 and develop "same" app under Xcode 4.2? Or maybe another way?
To anitcipate some answers, I cannot upgrade higher than Xcode 4.2, because I'm working on Snow Leopard and what's more painful I don't have iPhone 5 itself, so I'm not even able to test it myself.
You can not, you will need the iOS 6 SDK to support the 4" iOS device.
Update to either Lion or Mountain Lion and then download the latest SDK and make sure that you autoresize masks are set correctly and your app will work on 3,5" and 4" device.
Unfortunately, you will have to update to a newer version of XCode, which will require an update of your OS to either Lion or Mountain Lion. I tried doing this recently with an older Macbook that I had, and it became more of a headache to get it to work with the older software than switching to a new SDK.
Everything should be a relatively easy update.

How to run iPhone 5 Simulator under Xcode 4.2 and Snow Leopard?

I'm trying to figure it out how to get simulator for 4" screen. I've found questions here on SO about importing SDKs for newer iOS SDK (here) but I cannot get the simulator from iOS6 to get working under Xcode 4.2 and Snow Leopard. It made impossible to open any Storyboard and running any app (no difference if old app from iOS 4.2 or newer from iOS 5.1) wasn't even an option.
I read this question here but it seems that answer was accepted even it does not tell anything usefull. Upgrading to Lion and running Xcode 4.5 etc - I know it is the best solution, but now it's out of reach and buying new mac isn't possible. Anybody?
simply go to Xcode preference ---> select Downloads and select Components tab .
Here you'll find list of simulator that are installed and to be install. Install whatever you want to.

Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below, or update to the latest version of the iOS SDK

I've just enrolled in the iOS dev program. I've an iPad2 running iOs 5.1.1 and am developing in XCode3.2.6.
I've gone through the steps to get a provisioning profile and use my iPad for development but it's not working... in XCode I see an iOS code signing Identity listed now but on trying to run on the device I get:
No provisioned iOS device is connected. Please check the Organizer to
view the status of any connected devices.
My device shows yellow in the Organize screen with message:
The version of iOS on XXXXX does not match any of the versions of
iOS supported for development with this installation of the iOS SDK.
Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below, or
update to the latest version of the iOS SDK; which is available here.
OS Installed on XXXXX
5.1.1 (9B206)
Xcode Supported iOS Versions Latest
4.3 (8F190)

4.0.2
4.0.1
3.2
3.2.2
3.2.1
3.1
3.1.3
3.1.2
I assume it's some incompatibility between iOS version and SDK but what am I supposed to do? The organizer screen seems to let me change iOS but asks me where to find the file image, which I don't have. And I don't know how or where to install a different SDK.
Sorry if I explained this badly, I'm pretty lost here. Although I have my app working in the simulator I really don't follow all this provisioning/profile stuff even after reading through the starter guide.
Your Xcode is too old. You must upgrade to at least XCode 4.3. But to upgrade to XCode 4.3, your mac need to be running Lion. It's a hassle, but after that, you will be able to build for your iPad that is currently on iOS 5. Otherwise, you need a device that is on previous version of iOS, but that's not sustainable because apple has a way of "automatically updating" your software...(or because of some careless settings, of course)
1 Open Xcode 5 (You should have Xcode 5)
2 Choose your iPhone5 (iOS7 or +) on Device Selection in Xcode 5 for your app.
3 Close Xcode 5, and Open Xcode 4
4 Your iPhone5 with iOS7 can now be used as test device.
Hope this helps.

Xcode 4.2 with iOS 5.0 not detecting iPhone iOS 5.1.1

I changed a while ago from Xcode 3 to Xcode 4.2 for Snow Leopard. Everything was fine, I developed apps for iPhone and all was going smoothly until today...
I got alert:
The version of iOS on “iPhone Prophone” does not match any of the versions of iOS supported for development with this installation of the iOS SDK. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below, or update to the latest version of the iOS SDK; which is available here.
Which is strange, because yesterday I was able with simple "run" test my app aimed for iOS 5.0 (Xcode target 5.0, 4C199) with my iPhone 4S, which has iOS 5.1.1 (9B206) for quite some time. In Organizer->Devices my iPhone has a yellow dot suggesting that something is wrong. I don't think I did something unexpected, just came, turned mac on and fired up Xcode... any solution?
I've read that, but as I said - I was using new Xcode for few weeks and suddenly this "non-detection" happened...
I'm stuck, thanks for help.
EDIT:
I found something relevant in this topic on SO, but I'll wait a bit - maybe there is something simpler or more obvious that I missed.
I managed to solve the problem, by:
1) downloading xcode 4.3.1
2) copying from package content SDK & Device Support for iOS 5.1 into Xcode directories
3) run and test on your device

Macbook 1,1 - IOS 5.0.1 - Xcode 4.2 - If I develop in this, will it work on current gen devices?

I only have the Macbook, which I CANNOT upgrade to Lion. I'd like to get started developing IOS applications. I've got an iPod Touch 5.0.1, so I'm good there. My main question is this-
When I finish making my applications and I deploy them to Apple, will they work just fine on other devices, like iPhone 4S 5.1.1?
Also, if I pay the $100 to Apple to develop, will they support my Xcode 4.2 for the whole year?
Will I be able to deploy my applications using this scenario without fear of Apple cutting me off?
Thanks in advance.
Xcode 4.2 is the last officially supported Xcode version that runs on Snow Leopard, but if you do developing on it, anything that works for older iOS's will run on your iDevices running newer OS's. You might be able to get newer SDK's to run with Xcode 4.2 but myself, I wouldn't risk it.
I think the big issue you're going to run into is that if you install a new OS onto your iDevice for testing, you may end up not being able to use your device for testing (in the Xcode organizer). So you probably want to keep at least one device back on the last supported iOS version for Xcode 4.2.
And this should take care of you for the whole year.
And hopefully you'll make enough money from whatever app you're building to afford a Macintosh where you can run Mountain Lion (OS 10.8) and Xcode 4.4 or 5 or whatever will be out a year from now.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
It really doesn't matter which Xcode do you have. You can even have Xcode 3 ;)
