Apparently the latest version of iOS is 5.1. I have been developing an iPad app for the past few months. So I have an iMac with Snow Leopard. Nowadays it seems that iOS 5.1 is the latest version for the iPad.
My question is if the app I have developed for iOS 4.3 is still compatible with iOS 5.1...?
I also realized I should update my iMac to OS Lion in order to be able to install XCode 4.3.2? This is the only version that supports iOS 5.1?
Thanks for your feedback!
Yes. All iOS versions are backwards-compatible.
Yes. You need the new xcode to use the iOS 5.1 SDK.

I'm just starting to learn iOS development. I have an old macbook pro that is running El Capitan (10.11.6). I was reading that the last version of Xcode that would be compatible is 8.2. If there is a later version that will work fine, let me know.
What are the drawbacks of developing in 8.2 as apposed to 9.2, the most recent version? am I going to face any major issues if I develop on 8.2?
Thanks in advance for the replies.
The biggest drawback is probably that you won't have access to the iOS 11 SDK which ships with Xcode 9. That means that you won't be able to use any functionality that is new to iOS 11 in your application. If you're using Swift, you also won't get the latest version.
You will face language issue because Xcode 8.2 support Swift 2.3 while Xcode 9.2 support latest swift 4.0
Xcode 9 includes SDKs for iOS 11.2, watchOS 4.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2
Xcode 9.2 having iPhone x simulator (new device)
You face issues while migrating to latest one.
If your macbook spec is not fast enough latest xcode will make u suffer. also latest xcode requires MacOSX High Sierra too. However just for comparison, my Mac Mini 2012 runs "ok ish" on Mac High Sierra and XCode 9.2. So if your macbook spec is similar to mine then you ought to use latest one.
I have developped my app on android but would like to do the dev for iOS.
I have an old mac that supports only 10.6.8 and xcode 3.2.6.
I can get access from time to time on a mac with 10.10.
my understanding is that the way to go now is swift.
will my xcode 3.2.6 support swift so that I could developp on my old mac and test on the newest 10.10.
what do you recommend I do? buying a new mac? :)
Many thanks!
Swift is only supported on xCode 6 like you can read here. And only for iOS 7 and higher.
So even methods are available for iOS 2, as long as the devices don't have installed iOS 7 or higher the swift code can't be executed and you would need to use objective-c instead.
I've recently updated xCode to the newest version. (which includes iOS SDK 6.1) The problem is, that i want to make my apps available for all iOS versions, starting at version 5.0. Is this even possible?
Best regards
Go to Xcode->Preferences->Downloads->install Simulators to test all iOS versions.
For setting your application minimum iOS version, goto Targets->Summary->Deployment Target->Set to 5.0
Hope this helps you..
I am developing an Application for iPad (iOS)on Xcode 4.2 on MAC OS X 10.6.5 i.e snow leopard and apple has not released sdk for ios 5.1 for snow leopard.
i was using my iPad for testing it was working great with ios 5.0.1.
i just recently upgrade iPad to 5.1 and now i am unable to deploy code on iPad , i checked the registration of my device for development on development.apple.com and its still exist.
i even checked in Organizer-Devices and in that window it show me following message :
The version of iOS on “My iPad” does not match any of the versions of iOS supported for development with this installation of the iOS SDK. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below, or update to the latest version of the iOS SDK; which is available here.
OS Installed on My iPad
5.1.1 (9B206)
Xcode Supported iOS Versions
Latest
5.0 (9A334)
4.3 (8F190)
4.3
4.2
can anybody help me with this.
Thanks in advance.
Click on your project name in the left top, then on your target, and then click on the "build settings" tab
In all the option there is a "iOS deployment target" i think this is what you want ^^
I had the same issue. Turns out you have to download/install the newest version of Xcode from the App Store.

I have developed an iOS application. My Xcode version is currently 4 and i want to upgrade to iOS 5. Can i do that without to be worry about the operability of my app later when i become on iOS 5?
Yes, there's nothing to worry about.
You should always build and test your application with the latest release and latest beta version of Xcode/iOS.
As of today this would be something like:
Xcode 4.1 on Lion with iOS 4.3
Xcode 4.2 beta on Lion with iOS 5.0 beta
You can install both of them on the same machine without any problems.
Also, I heard that starting with Xcode 4.2 you will be able to several versions of the simulator.
If you are trying to submit an app to the App Store you cannot build it with the Beta version of XCode. Also note that the latest Beta is iOS 5 and XCode 4.2.
On the iOS Dev Center page after selecting iOS SDK Beta
Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview cannot be used to submit apps to the iOS or Mac App Store. Continue to use the publicly released version of Xcode to compile and submit apps to the App Stores.
