I've recently changed my terminal to use Oh My ZSH but for some reason when I try to run rails commands I get the following error:

I had exactly the same problem, and it turned out to be that I hadn't moved an essential line from ~/.bashrc to ~/.zshrc. Putting it in at the end and reopening the terminal fixed the problem:
[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm"
For people using rbenv, you should move your rbenv initialization to ~/.zshenv as in http://coderwall.com/p/0o64yq?i=1&p=1&q=author%3Awilhelmbot
Like mention first step is to add
[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm"
If after adding this line of code if still not work check your export path.
Check your PATH (export PATH) in .zshrc and remove all references to .rvm within it. You should end up with something like this export
PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/usr/texbin
When installing oh-my-zsh it will look at your current PATH and fill your .zshrc with it, which also pulls .rvm environment. And you won't want that there since rvm should be handling it.
For rbenv users
when you install omz (oh my zsh!), omz does two things
It copies the content of .zshrc into .zshrc.pre-oh-my-zsh
makes new .zshrc
To solve the "Rails is not currently installed ", what you could do is copy the content of .zshrc.pre-oh-my-zsh into the new .zshrc.
cd ~
cat .zshrc.pre-oh-my-zsh >> .zshrc
After this restarting the terminal worked for me.
1) Try these commands:
rbenv which rails
rbenv which gem
gem env
2) If the environment problem isn't clear from that output, then:
See if you have this file:
$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm
Try to "source" it

I am very new to Ruby on Rails. I have installed ruby, rails, gems, and RVM (and possibly some more RoR-associated files) via Mac OS terminal.
When I first installed these softwares, they seemed to work fine, and I could execute command lines like:
rails new 'project' or rails server
But then I messed around with git, directory, and some sudo bundle/gem commands a little bit because "bundle install" command wouldn't work. Honestly, I don't know what I have done, but all of these command lines have stopped working now.
They output various error messages, such as:
1) There was an error parsing 'Gemfile': Undefined local variable or method for Gemfile. Bundler cannot continue.
2) bash: /usr/local/bin/rails: /usr/local/opt/ruby/bin/ruby: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
3) ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError)
You don't have write permissions
4) find spec_for exe': can't find gem bundler (>= 0.a) (Gem::GemNotFoundException)
I think there were more errors, but these are all I can remember for now. Obviously, I am getting some intimidating error messages that I don't understand.
So I have come to a conclusion that I should uninstall all Ruby, Rails, Gems, RVM, and Homebrew files. But even this task looks very challenging to me.
I have tried numerous command lines in an attempt to delete them, but when I type in "rails" on spotlight, I still see lots of rails-associated files. Also, when I type "ruby -v" on terminal, it is still showing the ruby 2.0.0p648 version.
When I type in "which ruby" on terminal, it says "/usr/bin/ruby
When I type in "which rails" on terminal, it says "usr/local/bin/rails
In short, I just want to delete all of these RoR-related files, softwares, and every trace of them, and reinstall them clean. Please please help me. I do not want to give up coding. Is it too late to say that I'm sorry?

Ruby is installed on OS X by default. So you don't want to remove that, there are things that might require ruby that has nothing to do with rails or your rails projects, you should ignore it. (and you should probably not use spotlight for finding dev files, its just confusing as to what is safe and what is not to play with)
Secondly, you'll hardly EVER use sudo for any rails-related work on your mac, so if a tutorial wants you to run that command, don't.
And lastly, its possible it's not as bad as you think. So there's 2 steps. 1 - Fix your rvm environment and 2 - fix your gemfile
TO RESOLVE
--Start be reinstalling RVM
\curl -sSL https://get.rvm.io | bash
Now because it's changed your shell environment (added variables and aliases) and because you've changed some things that are unpredictable... Log out, and log back into your mac.
** Which ruby is in use now? **
which ruby
If you're system is still showing /usr/bin/ruby then you'll need to edit your shell profiles. Because I don't know what you might have done, or what shell env you're using I'll just be thorough. Any excess won't hurt.
You'll review (in the editor of your choice) 4 hidden files in your home directory
/Users/yourhome/.profile
/Users/yourhome/.bashrc
/Users/yourhome/.zshrc
/Users/yourhome/.bash_profile
If you're using bash, then make sure your bash_profile has in it
source ~/.profile
In the bashrc nad zshrc files make sure the rvm path exists
export PATH="$PATH:$HOME/.rvm/bin"
In the .profile file make sure this command exists
[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" # Load RVM into a shell session *as a function*
-- Once you've saved your changes, log out and back in (you shouldn't have have to do this but again, just being thorough).
Once that is done, you should be able to install a ruby -
rvm install ruby-2.2.3
Now if you say rvm use ruby-2.2.3 and then which ruby, you should see a pointer to your home directory where rvm lives.
* Now to fix the Gemfile *
You have an encoding problem, which is what caused you the errors that made you see spots in the first place. If you paste the contents of the file here
(in a terminal in the directory of your rails project)
cat Gemfile
Paste those contents here and it can be fixed.
I'm attempting to install homebrew on Mountain Lion so that I can install Ruby 1.9.3. After years of programming only PHP, 'm finally taking the jump into Rails, Git, etc. In anycase, I'm on a laptop that was given to me. Therefore, my login account is not the original account. I think that might be causing the problem I'm having.
When running brew doctor I get the following:
Warning: Homebrew's sbin was not found in your path.
Consider amending your PATH variable so it contains:
/usr/local/sbin
When running echo $PATH I get the following:

in your .bash_profile, you can simply do:
export PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/sbin"
You can manually edit your $PATH and /bin. This guide was not too terrible it helped me understand the entire concept of $PATH /bin and being a sudoer.

So I have no idea at all what this error is indicating.
You have not completed rvm installation. You need add ~/.rvm bin paths before /usr/bin by command in .bashrc:
[[ -s "/Users/pftg/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "/Users/pftg/.rvm/scripts/rvm".
To test just check $PATH env. Should be similar to:
/.../.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p125#global/bin:/.../.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p125/bin:/.../.rvm/bin:/usr/local/bin
If you installed everything ruby as well as rails means, you may need to select the 'Run command as login shell' checkbox by doing following,
Open terminal
Go to Edit tab, then select Profile Preferences from the menu item.
The Profile Preferences window should be displayed, then select Title and Command tab.
Then select the checkbox Run command as a login shell.
I just used RVM to create a "gemset", switched to it, and tried installing Rails again and it works now.

I'm not sure why that fixed it or why it wasn't working before. I like when things work, but I would rather have figured out why it wasn't working with the #global gemset.

I had the exact symptoms described above as well and was stuck on this problem for quite some time (the ruby environment and dependencies are a horrible mess). I can't say I'm out of the woods yet but at least I'm picking up the correct version of rails now and gotten past this error.
I believe the real issue here is actually to do with zlib. It seems that it's a crucial component to separate your system version of ruby (v1.8 likely install via yum/apt-get) with the other versions or Ruby you need (installed via rvm) for other projects.
If you do not have zlib installed, or rvm is not using it correctly, then sometimes you will pick up the system ruby/rails and all sorts of strange errors occur.
If you DO have zlib installed (yum/apt-get install zlib) then the trick I discovered was that I specifically had to tell rvm which version of zlib to use when installing ruby.
rvm install 1.9.3 --with-zlib-dir=$rvm_path/usr
I just recently switched over to using zsh with oh-my-zsh and I am having issues using the rails command line tool. Here are the steps that I ran through, and the error that I am receiving.
I ran the curl command that the github page provides:
curl -L https://github.com/robbyrussell/oh-my-zsh/raw/master/tools/install.sh | sh
Then I went to run rails s, this is the following error message that I receive:

This looks like I am having a gem error so I reinstalled rvm, rails and bundler with nothing solving the issue. However if I switch my terminal back over to bash then I dont have any issues and rails works perfectly fine. Has anyone else run into a similar issue? I want to use zsh because it seems like it has better features but if I can't use rails then I have to dump it to the curb.

1) add to .zshrc at first line to correct find bin direcrory (your CO):

2) add next line after previous one:
[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && . "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm"
3) and at the end change PATH:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
For me it is work fine (now it correct define $PATH with all rvm gemsets)

Ok I got it to work by deleting the path that was set in the zshrc and copying the rvm lines from my bash_profile in order to get the right configuration from rvm. If you run the following command in your terminal it should work:
cat ~/.bash_profile >> ~/.zshrc
If you are using rbenv then copy this line from bash.rc which you can access by sudo gedit ~/.bashrc
export PATH="$HOME/.rbenv/bin:$PATH"
eval "$(rbenv init -)"
export PATH="$HOME/.rbenv/bin:$PATH"enter code here
eval "$(rbenv init -)"
then paste it to zshrc, which can be accessed by sudo gedit ~/.zshrc
I have installed ruby via rvm on Mint 11 no problem. Installed gems, ditto. Installed rails via gem install rails, and when I type rails -v it returns the correct version. Until I close that terminal and reopen a terminal. When I do that and type rails -v I get the message
The program 'rails' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install rails
If I then type
rvm use 1.9.2-p180 --default
and then type rails -v I again get the correct version...until I close the terminal.
I should add that I have added a path statement to my .bashrc pointing to the 1.9.2-p180 directory in my .rvm directory.
Typing ruby -v always returns the correct version.
Create .bashrc file and add .rvm command
$ sudo touch ~/.bashrc
$ sudo gedit ~/.bashrc
(Add line to .bashrc file)

Logout and Login OR just update user profile from .bashrc with following command
$ . ~/.bashrc
Try adding this command to your .profile and reopening your shell:

That way you keep all your gems seperate for each project and it's dead simple to set up
Try which rails. Maybe there is a link to a stub that gives you the note.
If that is the case calling the full path might help, e.g. /usr/local/bin/rails
