I'm very new to Ruby environment ..
I want to run my Ruby on rails Application in apache in xampp on windows xp rather than WeBrick server which is in-built for ruby on rails...
I tried it by adding Virtual host in apache- http.conf file
When i run my application i'm able to see "Welcome Abroad"....
But when i click on "About your application’s environment"
it was showing error like the following

To deploy your app with apache you need to use phusion passenger http://www.modrails.com
There are plenty of how-to's around the web and the documentation is good enough to get the service running.
This means your Ruby on Rails server is NOT running.
You need to run your server first.
I made a batch file, start-server.bat which contains
d:
cd "D:\Ruby\Web\rails1"
"C:\RailsInstaller\Ruby1.9.3\bin\ruby.exe" script\rails server
then check the PORT number of the server that is running,
So since the port on the screenshot says 10524, you can run it on
http://localhost:10524/

This is the very first app I am deploying so I'm not 100% familiar with the whole process.
Right now, all my code for the app is on my server, and if i run rails s and bind it to my droplet ip, it shows up perfectly(i.e. if i go to myipaddress:3000).
But, if I just go to myipaddress on my browser, i just get a 500 error page.
I am confused about the whole process, do i have to have my rails s running the whole time when deployed and running on the server?
If not what am I doing wrong and how can i fix it so that it just shows up when I go to my droplet ipaddress?
My nginx.conf file has its server name pointed to my droplet ip and its root pointed at my apps root folder.
Also, im not getting any errors logged into my nginx/log/error.log file
First of all you don't need to start server with rails s.
You just need to install passenger and nginx for start application with installation of ruby on rails.
And if you just want to check your app is running or not then start server with rails s into digitalocean and try to open it with browser with `ip:3000' then it will work.
From this Ref. link you can start with passenger and nginx.
Let me know if you need more help.
I'm very new with Rails and I've installed Vagrant to run the Rails server. I've started the server and am able to load localhost:3000, now I don't know where to go. The command line is blank and I read that I should type in "script/console", but all I can really do is ctrl-C or -d.
When I tried to run Vagrant in a separate Window with "vagrant up" it says I need to do "Vagrant init"
Where do I go from here so that I can start going through my tutorials/start developing?
This screencast from RailsCasts should get you started. Some of the suggestions are a bit out-dated but by reading the show notes and comments, you should be able to get up and running. From there you can modify.
While getting Rails set up initially with Vagrant will be work, it's an incredibly handy tool to have experience with. It becomes even more useful when you incorporate a provisioning tool like Puppet.
In your terminal if you are running the webrick server via rails server you either need to background it or open a new terminal to get your shell prompt back. If you ctrl-C out of it you will kill the server. Keep in mind, the webrick server should only be used for local development. It's not a production level web server. See the Rails Getting Started guide for more details.
If you are going to run your rails server in a Vagrant VM, you'll need to configure the port forward in your Vagrantfile so you can access from your host machine.
config.vm.forward_port 3000, 9080
There error you are seeing would be from you running vagrant up in a directory that doesn't contain a Vagrantfile.
I am new to ruby. I can view my project on browser when I write ruby script/server otherwise I can't view my project on localhost.
What I have to do to view my project always on browser?
If you are using ruby on rails for the first time . Your answer is detached(deamon) mode .
Make sure your ruby version is more then 1.8.6 and rails version is less then 3.x.x
Script is
ruby script/server -d
And to know more
ruby script/server --help
When you use your application (using a browser) the application's code is run on a web server that receives the requests, execute the right code and respond to the user.
Now, rails provide a simple web server that you can run with rails server and you can use to test and develop your application. This web server is run on your machine and when you go to http://localhost:3000/ it's that local web server that responds.
If you want to access your application you need a webserver running. If you want to access your application anytime from everywhere the application must be in a server accessible from everywhere but you first need to deploy your application.
I installed Ubuntu, GlassFish web server, installed JRuby on Rails using GlassFish's admin tools, deployed my application from .war archive. The problem is only - when I attempt to run this web application nothing happens. GlassFish isn't listening on port 8080 as promised. The GlassFish administration web console listens on port 4848 and works fine. What to do to pair GlassFish and JRuby on Rails the correct way, remembering that it isn't a separate JRuby installation?
Update: it seems that this problem lies somewhere around access rights because I can deploy an application through
sudo ./asadmin deploy
but can not do the same through web console. The output is as if the application has been deployed, without any error messages (web interface shows the presence of application, domain folder contains my application's file/folder structure), but something in server's internals isn't bound to application.
I didn't think much and applied quick and dirty solution: set "777" access rights to /home/glassfish and all its contents. It helped.
I am developing a Rails 3 application and I have installed Capistrano on the client side and Passenger with Apache 2 on the server side.
I make a deployment and the files are sent to a folder called u/apps/.
But when I visit the IP address I am currently using I only get to an empty folder, how do I configure Apache to look for my app in the current folder? So that I only need to visit my IP/domain to see my app?
I have done this using Rails 2.x but I think for Rails 3 also pretty much the same thing. For this you need to use Passenger and then configure Apache.
Following are some useful resources
http://www.modrails.com/install.html
http://railscasts.com/episodes/122-passenger-in-development
If you browse to your URL and you see an apache files/folders list that means that passenger is not triggered for that location...
Test your server environment by running a mongrel/thin in your application folder and see that your application runs correctly. After that, look at your Apache configuration (see Passenger docs).
