Yet, I have Xcode 4.2 open and my source code.
In the top left scheme dropdown, I have the scheme set but on the right hand side of that dropdown, its got my device set there.
I don't want my device set there because I'm not testing anymore.
I want to build/archive for distribution.
I want to see iOS Device in that target but I don't see it there.
Any idea how I can get iOS Device to be listed in that destination dropdown?
Currently, it has ipad and iPhone simulators and my own iPhone name.
Just select your iPhone name and go to Product -> Archive.
Or unplug all your iOS devices and then there will be shown iOS Device label.

I've been making a ton of new projects as I'm learning Swift. My development is all on my laptop, so I hate using the default 6s Plus simulator, since the window is too big to easily see. Is there a way to change the default simulator to be a different one for new projects?
No need to delete simulators!
Product → Destination → Add Additional Simulators...
In the sidebar, select the simulator you want to hide
Uncheck "Show as run destination"
Edit: Updated for Xcode 10
You can select the desired simulator via the Hardware > Device > [OS] menu (Xcode 9):
While unchecking "Show as run destination" hides the simulator, this will also change the default value.
Updated image for Xcode 11.5
Xcode 9 UPDATE:
In Xcode 9, no need to delete simulators, and the way to turn them on/off is to go in Product/Destination/Add Additional Simulators... select the simulator you want to turn off, then uncheck the box: 'Show as run destination'
No. But...
If you don't like the size of the 6s plus simulator, make it smaller with the simulator Window Scale menu.
If you don't like the 6s plus simulator at all, delete it with the Xcode Window Devices menu.
Xcode 12.5
In Xcode, go to Product -> Destination -> Choose Destination menu and selecting the device you'd like to be your default.
The original answer could be found in apple support forum here: Apple support forum,
In addition if you want to make the device smaller just hover over bottom right corner of the simulator and you will see the resize option
Deleting the simulators you don't want will default you to the simulator you do want. I also develop on my laptop and the biggest simulator I can see w/o scaling down is the 4S, so I deleted simulators for iPhone 5 and above and now every project I create defaults to 4S simulator. If I ever need the newer simulators, I will just re-download.
In my case, just select the device in Product → Destination, Xcode 12.4
Xcode version 11.5
On Simulator > File > Open Device > iOS 13.5 > Change the default Simulator
Xcode(v11.5)
open your simulator, choose **File/Open Device/iOS 13.5/iPhone8 ** will change your simulator device to iPhone 8.
When you reopen your simulator, iPhone 8 will be your device simulator.
I was having an issue with Core Location in my app so I followed this advice (the selected answer) and reset my network and location settings on my device. Now that I've done that, my device isn't showing up as an option to build and run the app in the top left corner of Xcode. It just says "iPhone" when it should say "Aaron's iPhone 4S" which is what I named the device I'm testing on. What happened and how do I add it back in?
I am using Xcode 6.3.2 and an iPhone 4S with 8.3
Here is a screenshot of the Devices window:
It just says "iPhone" because name of your iPhone is "iPhone". So your iPhone is in list of devices, I think you can build and run the application as normal. Check setting of your iPhone to make sure the name of device.
Ever since i upgraded to xcode5, the iOS simulator only displays as an iPad even though the project is targeted for iPhone. The Run button also shows it's set to iPhone and I've tried switching between the different iPhone types in simulator. But no matter what, my iPhone project opens as an iPad simulation. Anybody encounter this problem or know how to fix it?
I believe I've downloaded all the relevant libraries and tools from apple as well. I'll double check that now but I'm pretty sure I have all the accessory downloads up to date.
Edit
I found the answer! Due to the changes with resolution of the retina display, the simulator was loading without the bezel. Turns out the best way to solve this problem without a large screen or retina display is to deploy target in navigator=>General menu=> to iOS 6.1 and make sure iOS simulator=>Hardware=>Devices=>is set to iOS 6.1 as well.
Have you tried changing the simulator device? Go to iOS Simulaotr.app -> hardware -> devices?
Download the extra components/simulators..
If you find your iOS simulator is showing a large iPad like display since upgrading, it's because of the change in resolution for the retina display. In order to view the simulator as a regular looking iPhone follow these steps:
Deploy your project target for iOS 6.1 or earlier. In the navigator menu (far left), top folder (your project folder), click it. Make sure "General" is selected in the menu in the centre of the screen. In 'deployment Info' set it to iOS 6.1 and 'devices' to iPhone.
Open iOS simulator: Click 'XCODE' in the top left of the screen => Open Developer Tools => iOS Simulator.
In iOS simulator, go to => Hardware => Devices => select iPhone => iOS 6.1. Make sure not to select any of the hardware devices that are listed as retina displays, thats the major key.
Finally, make sure the deployment next to the run button is also showing 'iPhone iOS 6.1' AND NOT 'iPhone Retina...'
And enjoy seeing the iPhone simulator properly again! :)
I just updated my iPhone4s to ios7 and xcode to 5.
I am trying to run my app on the iphone which worked for 6.1.x and 4.xx. However,
after the update xcode claims not to find my connected iphone testing my app.
Xcode cannot run using the selected device.
No provisioned iOS devices are available with a compatible iOS version. Connect an iOS device with a recent enough version of iOS to run your application or choose an iOS simulator as the destination?
Window -> Organizer.
Click on device tab.
Click on the iOS device on the left side and click the button 'Use for development'.
Check in Organizer if device is used for development or has lost this property on xcode actualization.
check the organizer like Rauru Ferro said. It might need some time to update the settings in Xcode. You should see a progress bar loading, after that everything should work fine.
I'm developing an application and I seem to have set something so it only runs in iPhone Simulator and not in iPad simulator (when I try to change the device in the Simulator from iPhone to iPad it simply opens it again in iPhone Simulator mode; in the iPad Sim the app doesn't show in the applications list).
How do I add the iPad run capability to my app?
Make sure you've set
iPhone/iPad
in your project's build settings (Deployment: "Targeted Device Family").
Select your target (i.e. not the target menu, but the target inside the menu.)
Click on the Project menu & choose "Upgrade Current Target for iPad."
In the dialog box that comes up, you're given two choices. Select "One Universal Application."
And that should be it. Previously, you had to roll back the deployment target for iOS to 3.2 since that was the latest version running on iPad. You would do this by right-clicking on the target, selecting getInfo from the popup menu, and looking through the Build Tab of the popup window for the deployment target. That should no longer be necessary as iPad now runs on iOS 4.3. But, if you have not updated your Xcode, the iPad simulator may still run only on version 3.2 or earlier.
Hope this works for you.
