I have a spreadsheet that has several worksheets, each containing a hundred or so hyperlinks to other documents on our network (file:////server/share/path/to/spreadsheet.xls). Opening these files within Excel 2003 takes a very long time, compared to how long it takes to open in 2007 or 2010. I took a look in Task Manager at the network tab to see what was going on when these files are opened and noticed a lot of steady network traffic while the file was opening, and as soon as the spreadsheet finally displayed on the screen, the network traffic dropped down to almost nothing. As I removed some of those links, the file would open faster, until I finally got rid of all the links and the file opened almost as fast as any other normal spreadsheet. Is there a way to prevent Excel from doing whatever it's doing with those links when the file first opens?

I have downloaded the single purchase raster file of the Australia-Oceania from Open tiles. The download has finished but when I attempt to open the file using GeoPro or QGIS I receive an error message that this file cannot be loaded. Can anyone help?

My theory is that you have to open the file with the blob logo (second version of the file listed in the file browser) and since the data set is so big (6+ gb) it will take a very long time to open.

I open QGIS
I click start a new blank project and
then drag the .mbtiles file over into the main window that now appears blank
dragging the file with the grid icon I receive an error message:
Invalid Layer: GDAL provider Cannot open GDAL dataset C:/.../2017-07-03_australia-oceania.mbtiles: `C:/.../2017-07-03_australia-oceania.mbtiles' not recognized as a supported file format. Raster layer Provider is not valid (provider: gdal, URI: C:/.../2017-07-03_australia-oceania.mbtiles
When I load the australia-oceania.mbtiles file with the blob logo, it loads for a very, very long time (3+ hours). I have not been able to wait for it to completely load.
To see if opening a file like this actually works, I downloaded a sample .mbtiles file from this website: https://docs.mapbox.com/help/glossary/mbtiles/
Opening the version of the sample trails.mbtiles file from the website above rendered the same error. If I open the version that looks like a blob for the icon, it loads in QGIS right away. This leads me to believe the loading time just takes forever since the open tiles .mbtiles file is so big.
When googling large files taking a long time to open with QGIS there are several issues open for other file types. It leads me to believe this may not be different: https://issues.qgis.org/issues/19509
I am using C# application with WebBrowser control to render and print MHT file using Internet explorer(IE).
recent i faced more time issue while print MHT file, single file took around a 1 hour to print file.
investigating MHT file, i found this file having more Links which may require to connect with internet and takes time load details.
This same files works fine with the older IE version having the "Work Offline" option. In current IE11 version work offline option is removed.
So any one have any idea how to resolve this time consumption issue of MHT file while print.

I have an ASP.NET web application that, in part, allows a user to upload (and download) documents. The upload isn't working very well either, but my download dialogs are having a serious issue and I have no clue why.
These files are stored on a share that is not on the same machine as the code.
I am attempting to send the download via a FilePathResult using the File overload File(location, mimetype, displayname).
When a user clicks the download link it will open a new blank page and begin the loading animation but will stick to this for a good couple of minutes for larger files (up to 25 mb) before showing the save/download dialog, where it then takes about 5 seconds to actually download the file.
I have hunted and hunted and so far the only thing I"ve found is that FilePathResult is supposed to not buffer the file in memory but instead simply hand over the file to the user for downloading.
Does anyone have any insight as to why it would take a good (timed) 5m 45s to bring up the download dialog on a file that is only 24 mb? I feel like IIS or asp is pre-loading the document somewhere when it shouldn't be, and even if it is that is way too much time for such a small file...

Its not much of a "fix", but I figured I should add this in-case anyone else has a similar problem.
It turns out that the people managing one of our network switches had some settings messed up and we had to submit a support ticket to have it fixed. Once this was done, everything worked fine.
Anyway, the issue was in the fact that they had our hardware running at "half-duplex" (1 way communication). I'm no network guy, this is just what I was told was the issue. I hope if anyone else has this problem that this might remind them to check with their hardware settings.
I'm building a Reporting web application right now with MVC3 and I've come up to a couple problems.
My goal is to have it able to generate and view Crystal Reports, SSRS reports, and Excel documents.
Right now I'm working on the Excel segment and I'm running into more trouble than I thought I would. First off, when I link directly to the file, it either opens inside the browser or it downloads it from the server and if the user makes changes it doesn't actually save it to the true file on the server.
I've tried both linking to the file directly using Razor and a ViewModel with the path to the document as well as directing it to an action that returned a File.
I've also tried linking it to a shortcut to the actual file thinking that if I could open the shortcut it would open the file the way I wanted it to and unfortunately it didn't really open at all.
The users already have access to the files on the server through a network drive, so as of right now they can go into the server, open the excel document, edit and save it no problem. I want to duplicate this effect through a link. The program already has a file browser built, so I can browse between the files and make links to the reports.

Since they are apparently on a network drive, you can just link to the files directly, relative to the user?
For example: a link to file://///SERVERNAME/folder/
I tested it between two computers on the network, and that seems to work. However, you still get a popup asking that you want to do with the file, open or save. (both in firefox and IE)

I am working on an internal application. We have a website that displays all our SSRS reports for a group of work. I have been asked to see if I can link all the files (pdf, word, excel) for the group of work. These files are stored on a file server that users viewing the reports have access to. Each group has its own group of reports and shared files.
Is it possible to open the files (without downloading them) from a webpage? Meaning that they file is opened from the file server? I don't want people to download a copy of the file.
I am pretty sure this can work with IE because sharepoint does it. However, other browsers may have an issue.
EDIT: What I would like is to have a web page with links to the files. When they click on a link (say for a word doc), word will open the file that resides on the file server. Without out a local copy downloaded from the network share.
EDIT2: Please note, I know what I am asking is probably not possible in all browsers. I am more or less just making sure. It seems possible in IE using activeX, but out side of that browsers do a good job at keeping processes inside a sandbox.
3 options. Remember this is for an internal website.
link to the share using file://. This will have the side affect of downloading the file to be viewed. As long as user clicks open every time it should not be a big deal.
Use JavaScript and activeX to open word (excel, reader, ect) passing in the file path as a command line arguments. This works only in IE and in win7 (probably vista) user will get a pop up asking if it is ok for the activeX control to run.
Create a new protocol. openfile://. This would be set up to run an application that is installed on the client machine which would open the file. Since it is internal, the application could be installed on the machines without issues. This also requires a registry change.
I haven't picked one as this change is still being looked into but i figure I would update this in case someone runs into something similar.
