I am very very very new to RoR and I'm doing this on my windows 7 environment.
Yeah I know, "why not ubuntu?" We tried..performance was dog slow.
Anyway, I have RoR running on my machine and I created a test app aptly named, "testApp".
I run it in the browser..voila! No biggie. I have my basic website.
Now when I try and run it with a checked out website on my desktop, I get this
C:\devApp>ruby script/server

And no server is started. I've gone through all my gems to make sure I have the right versions as per my lead developer tells me. And we both are scratching our heads now.
Can someone help me figure out what dependency I'm missing?
Thanks!
I think this is happening because your RubyGems version is out of date. Try running gem update --system to update it to the latest version
Just update your bundler, maybe of any-one of the older gem is conflicting with latest one, this type of issues arises.
'gem install bundler'
and then 'bundler install'
If you find again error, then delete GEM.lock file, then run bundler install. It may resolve the issue.
Seems like you are trying to run an application without all the required gems, I would try installing all the gems that are mentioned in the "Gemfile" (root of the app), and running the application again.
As a Windows user, I would really suggest that you try to do your rails learning and development in Ubuntu (like I do). It is much easier to install, mantain, test applications and get help.

I'm so frustrated right now, I keep doing things apparently right but something always has to go wrong! Anyways, I hope someone will be able to help me here :(
You can follow GoRails guide to install RoR on windows it will be much easier.
Here it is: Install Ruby On Rails on Windows 10
Also after installing it you may face some other issues related to your database ( whatever database you use) like you may have installed Postgresql on windows, so when after installing it on WSL you need to kill the one running on the port that WSL will use, and similar issues, all solved across the internet
Heyo. I apologize in advance if this question has been answered in another thread. I've searched through the site but I didn't find an answer. However, the closest related issue was Ruby on Rails / PostgreSQL - Library not Loaded error when starting server- libq.5.dylib, but it was never resolved, and the answer doesn't help me.
I'm trying to get PostgreSQL running on my Mac OSX 10.6.8. I already have Ruby 1.9.3p392 and Rails 3.2.13 installed.
Since I've 10.6.8, and PostGresApp requires 10.7+, I tried installing PG using the manual installer (v9.2.3) available here: http://www.enterprisedb.com/products-services-training/pgdownload
I first installed it to its default path at: /Library/PostgreSQL/9.2/. I then installed the pg gem (PATH=$PATH:/Library/PostgreSQL/9.2/bin sudo gem install pg). When I tried rails s to launch my localhost, I got the error below.
After some reading, I guessed it might be a path error, so I removed the pg gem, and then used the postgresql uninstaller. I then reinstalled pg in /users/stewartmccoy/Library/PostgreSQL/9.2/...and then reinstalled the pg gem. But I still get the same error.
Any thoughts on how I might correctly install PostgreSQL and get my rails server running?

The key part of the error is:
Library not loaded: libpq.5.dylib (LoadError)
This suggests that ruby can't find libpq at runtime. To address that you should probably set the DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to point to the lib directory of your PostgreSQL install, either globally or in a wrapper script you use to start Rails. See this superuser question for some more info.
The Pg gem can find the library during compilation and installation because the pg_config executable is on the PATH and it uses that to find libpq. It appears that it doesn't store the path for use at runtime so you have to set the runtime dynamic linker up yourself.
A simple wrapper script (in case you don't want to modify your global environment) is something like:
#!/bin/bash
export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/pg/lib
exec rails "$#"
The "$#" basically means "pass all arguments to this script through as if they were passed here directly". It preserves quoting correctly and essentially means that the rails command can't tell you didn't run it directly.
I wanted to put my two cents here to answers above.
Sometimes it's enough to just reinstall pg gem.
gem uninstall pg && gem install pg
In my case I upgraded postgresql server from 9.6 up to 14.x and dylib paths were changed.
/opt/local/lib/postgresql96/libpq.5.dylib -> /opt/local/lib/postgresql14/libpq.5.dylib
The gem uses pg_config to determine paths to /opt/local/lib/postgresql[version] folder (named PKGLIBDIR). To build native library for the gem rake sets paths to dynamic libs by fetching them from pg_config in compile. Once pg gem is compiled the paths are linked forever. So, the reinstallation recompiles and relinks path to the new libraries.
A similar stackoverflow answer proposed removing Postgres.app from your PATH, uninstalling the pg gem, and installing the pg gem again.
(I'm not taking the time to check carefully if that applies to this problem, but it solved a problem I had and I want to spread that solution around since I had trouble finding it.)

Don't know if this answer is helpful or not ... but I ran into the same problem of sorts this week.
When I googled around for an answer, the one that I found helpful was just to put gem 'thin' in Gemfile.
(of course, this is reliant on having installed the thin gem already)
Then run bundle install after that. (this installs the thin gem).
When you run rails server, it'll work with thin automatically.
Hope this helps!
edit: changed bundle to bundle install
edit 2: added the sentence about thin gem
It looks like your mysql2 gem is not properly installed. Take a look at the answer to this question. It should help you set it up. You need to first install mysql (I like using homebrew to do this). Then gem install with the proper path.

I've installed a few gems it was complaining about through netbeans gem manager but I got stuck at mysql2. Even though I installed mysql and mysql2 gems, it still won't find it.
With little research, it seems i have to do a bundle install, for WEBrick to run/ check dependencies or whatever. Netbeans project has a Bundler context menu with options for check, init, install, show etc.
None of those produce any output in the Output: Bundler window. The Bundler process starts in netbeans processes but then quits after a second. No errors, info or anything.
What do I need to do to get this working. This is a blank Ruby/Rails Application through Netbeans 7.1.
EDIT 1:
The error in file: C:/Ruby193/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/mysql2-0.3.11-x86-mingw32/lib/mysql2/mysql2.rb:2 contains the following lines:

require "mysql2/#{$1}/mysql2"
Nothing Special. I tried changing that to mysql, or just "mysql2", it doesn't work. Errors that client is not initialized when I comment the whole line.

Did you get a message that your user is not allowed to install gems?
Then you should try following command in your rails application root folder
bundle install --path vendor/bundle
make sure to have the configurated database.yml in the config folder before running the previous command, or run it again after creating the file.
I have tried various installation methods for deploying a WEBrick and mongrel from the terminal. When I enter the rails server command I get the following:
Toran1$ rails server

I have installed the gem both locally and at the root level, and I also have navigated to the application folder before issuing the command. Any help would be appreciated!
Webrick will install automatically if you install rails in a correct manner.
Try this link
Here
And if you don't want to install rails again, try to install server using gem command
Dont forget to include the gems in Gemfile and to run "bundle install"
If you are using Rails < 3.1 you need to use version ~> 0.2.7 of the mysql2 gem
Checkout the documentation and search for active record: https://github.com/brianmario/mysql2
I'm not sure if that will help solve this problem directly, but it may solve others that you may encounter.
Just update your bundler, maybe of any-one of the older gem is conflicting with latest one, this type of issues arises.
gem install bundler
and then bundler install
If you find again error, then delete GEM.lock file, then run
bundler install
This may resolve the issue.
