General question about information a scheduler 'dashboard' should have - quartz.net

Sorry for another non programming question, but I'm using Quartz.NET, a scheduler for .NET applications, for a Windows Service which allows users to schedule transferrig of files that match a regular expression from various sources - for example the user may schedule a job to occur every day at 6pm that transfers the files from a network path to a FTP server.
The adding jobs and management is done using an ASP.NET project, and I'm creating a Dashboard to display useful info to the user. I have the following information on the dashboard so far:
Total number of jobs
Windows Service status
Time since scheduler active
I know it's a very general question, but what other snippets of info can I add to the dashboard, as it's very sparse at the moment.

I've worked as a product manager on a few schedulers. Here are some common requirements for these types of things, but I urge you to talk to some target users to find out if they are applicable to your application.
The use cases:
1. Trying to identify if the jobs are running okay.
2. If jobs are not running okay, give the user clues as to the cause. Give user tools to debug and fix.
General requirements:
1. Table with info on last N jobs:
- Time started, time completed. Status of completion (success / failure). Length of time. Any errors. User who scheduled job. Any dependencies this job has on other jobs or other events. Specific machine the job ran on (if in a cluster).
Might be nice to include links in this dashlet that would allow you to cancel a job that might be hung.
Priority of the job (if you have priorities).
Compare all jobs: %succeed, %failure. Avg time to complete job.
Compare jobs by the scheduling user: avg time, %success, %failure.
This is by no means a comprehensive list or something. Just my trying to give you a few ideas, based on what I can remember off the top of my head.

Jenkins results: Need a "single" summary report of last run of jobs

We have multiple jenkins-jobs scheduled at roughly near the same time every night.
I would like a report-summary of status to be available to me / or sent to me.
I do not repeatedly want to do a walk through test suite every day.

The Global Build Stats plugin might fit your needs. It does not support scheduled email, but if you need that you could use the rest API it exposes to write your own.

DataFlow Batch Jobs and Quotas

When submitting many jobs, I get an error similar to
Project <my project> has insufficient quota(s) to execute this workflow
Since this is a batch job, why is my job not held until resources are available?
Holding it until the resources are available isn't always the best solution -- that may never happen depending on your total quota, behavior of other workloads, etc.
But having an option to do so seems like it could be a useful feature -- will note your request.

How should I schedule many Google Search scrapes over the course of a day?

Currently, my Nokogiri script iterates through Google's SERPs until it finds the position of the target website. It does this for each keyword for each website that each user specifies (users are capped on amount of websites & keywords they can track).
Right now, it's run in a rake that's hard-scheduled every day and batches all scrapes at once by looping through all the websites in the database. But I'm concerned about scalability and swarming Google with a batch of requests.
I'd like a solution that scales and can run these scrapes over the course of the day. I'm not sure what kind of solution is available or what I'm really looking for.
Note: The amount of websites/keywords change from day to day as users add and delete their websites and keywords. I don't mean to make this question too superfluous, but is this the kind of thing Beanstalkd/Stalker (job queuing) can be used for?
You will have to balance two issues: Scalability for lots of users versus Google shutting you down for scaping in violation of their terms of use.
So your system will need to be able to distribute tasks to various different IPs to conceal your bulk scraping which suggests at least two levels of queuing. One to manage all the jobs and send them to each separate IP for subsequent searching and collecting results and queues on each separate machine to hold the requested searches until they are executed and the results returned.
I have no idea what Google's thresholds are (I am sure they don't advertise it) but exceeding them and getting cut off would obviously be devastating for what you are trying to do so your simple looping rake task is exactly what you shouldn't do after a certain number of users.
So yes, use a queue of some sort but realize that you probably have a different goal from the typical goal of a queue in that you want to deliberately delay jobs rather that offload word to avoid UI delays. So you will be seeking ways to slow down the queue rather than have it just execute job after job as they arrive in the queue.
So based on a cursory inspection of DelayedJob and BackgroundJobs it looks like DelayedJob has what you would need with the run_at attribute. But I am only speculating here and I am sure an expert would have more to say.

I've used both of them, and found them easy to work with.
There are definitely some background job libraries that might work.

However, you might think about just scheduling a Cron job that runs more times during the day, and processes less items per run.

Quartz.Net jobs not always running - can't find any reason why

We're using Quartz.Net to schedule about two hundred repeating jobs. Each job uses the same IJob implementing class, but they can have different schedules. In practice, they end up having the same schedule, so we have about two hundred job details, each with their own (identical) repeating/simple trigger, scheduled. The interval is one hour.
The task this job performs is to download an rss feed, and then download all of the media files linked to in the rss feed. Prior to downloading, it wipes the directory where it is going to place the files. A single run of a job takes anywhere from a couple seconds to a dozen seconds (occasionally more).
Our method of scheduling is to call GetScheduler() on a new StdSchedulerFactory (all jobs are scheduled at once into the same IScheduler instance). We follow the scheduling with an immediate Start().
The jobs appear to run fine, but upon closer inspection we are seeing that a minority of the jobs occasionally - or almost never - run.
So, for example, all two hundred jobs should have run at 6:40 pm this evening. Most of them did. But a handful did not. I determine this by looking at the file timestamps, which should certainly be updated if the job runs (because it deletes and redownloads the file).
I've enabled Quartz.Net logging, and added quite a few logging statements to our code as well.
I get log messages that indicate Quartz is creating and executing jobs for roughly one minute after the round of jobs starts.
After that, all activity stops. No jobs run, no log messages are created. Zero.
And then, at the next firing interval, Quartz starts up again and my log files update, and various files start downloading. But - it certainly appears like some JobDetail instances never make it to the head of the line (so to speak) or do so very infrequently. Over the entire weekend, some jobs appeared to update quite frequently, and recently, and others had not updated a single time since starting the process on Friday (it runs in a Windows Service shell, btw).
So ... I'm hoping someone can help me understand this behavior of Quartz.
I need to be certain that every job runs. If it's trigger is missed, I need Quartz to run it as soon as possible. From reading the documentation, I thought this would be the default behavior - for SimpleTrigger with an indefinite repeat count it would reschedule the job for immediate execution if the trigger window was missed. This doesn't seem to be the case. Is there any way I can determine why Quartz is not firing these jobs? I am logging at the trace level and they just simply aren't there. It creates and executes an awful lot of jobs, but if I notice one missing - all I can find is that it ran it the last time (for example, sometimes it hasn't run for hours or days). Nothing about why it was skipped (I expected Quartz to log something if it skips a job for any reason), etc.
Any help would really, really be appreciated - I've spent my entire day trying to figure this out.
After reading your post, it sounds a lot like the handful of jobs that are not executing are very likely misfiring. The reason that I believe this:

In Quartz.NET the default misfire threshold is 1 minute. Chances are, you need to examine your logging configuration to determine why those misfire events are not being logged. I bet if you throw open the the floodgates on your logging (ie. set everything to debug, and make sure that you definitely have a logging directive for the Quartz scheduler class), and then rerun your jobs. I'm almost positive that the problem is the misfire events are not showing up in your logs because the logging configuration is lacking something. This is understandable, because logging configuration can get very confusing, very quickly.
Also, in the future, you might want to consult the quartz.net forum on google, since that is where some of the more thorny issues are discussed.

Now, your other question about setting the policy for what the scheduler should do, I can't specifically help you there, but if you read the API docs closely, and also consult the google discussion group, you should be able to easily set the misfire policy flag that suits your needs. I believe that Trigger's have a MisfireInstruction property which you can configure.
Also, I would argue that misfires introduce a lot of "noise" and should be avoided; perhaps bumping up the thread count on your scheduler would be a way to avoid misfires? The other option would be to stagger your job execution into separate/multiple batches.

scheduled task or windows service

My team is having a debate which is better: a windows service or scheduled tasks. We have a server dedicated to running jobs and currently they are all scheduled tasks. Some jobs take files, rename them and place them in other directories on the network. Other jobs extract data from SQL, modify it, and ship it elsewhere. Other jobs ftp files out. There is a lot of variety, but all in all, they are fairly straightforward.
I am partial to having each of these run as a windows service instead of a scheduled task because it is so much easier to monitor a windows service than a scheduled task. Some are diametrically opposed. In the end, none of us have that much experience to provide actual factual comparisons between the two methods. I am looking for some feedback on what other have experienced.
If it runs constantly - windows service.
If it needs to be run at various intervals - scheduled task.
Scheduled Task - When activity to be carried out on some fixed/predefined schedule. It take less memory and resources of OS. Not required installation. It can have UI (eg. Send reminder mail to defaulters)
Windows Service - When a continue monitoring is required. It makes OS busy by consuming more. Require install/uninstallation while changing version. No UI at all (eg. Process a mail as soon as it arrives)
Use them wisely
Sceduling jobs with the build in functionality is a perfectly valid use. You would have to recreate the full functionality in order to create a good service, and unless you want to react to speciffic events, I see no reason to move a nightly job into a service.
Its different when you want to process a file after it was posted in a folder, thats something I would create a service for, thats using the filesystem watcher to monitor a folder.
I think its reinventing the wheel
While there is nothing wrong with using the Task Scheduler, it is itself, a service. But we have the same requirements where I work and we have general purpose program that does several of these jobs. I interpreted your post to say that you would run individual services for each task, I would consider writing a single, database driven (service) program to do all your tasks, and that way, when you add a new one, it is simply a data entry chore, and not a whole new progam to write. If you practice change control, this difference is can be significant. If you have more than a few tasks the effort may be comperable. This approach will also allow you to craft a logging mechanism best suited to your operations.
This is a portion of our requirments document for our task program, to give you an idea of where to start:
This program needs to be database driven.
It needs to run as a windows service.
The program needs to be able to process "jobs" in the following manner:
Jobs need to be able to check for the existence of a source file, and take action based on the existence or not of the source file. (i.e proceed with processing, vs report that the file isn't there vs ignore it because it is not critical that the file isn't there.
Jobs need to be able to copy a file from a source to a target location or
Copy a file from source, to a staging location, perform "processing", and then copy either the original file or a result of the "processing" to the target location or
Copy a file from source, to a staging location, perform "processing", and the processing is the end result.
The sources and destination that jobs might copy to and from can be disparate: UNC, SFTP, FTP, etc.
The "processing", can be, encrypting/decrypting a file, parsing a data file for correct format, feeding the file to the mainframe via terminal emulation, etc., usually implemented by calling a command line passing parameters to an .exe
Jobs need to be able to clean up after themselves, as required. i.e. delete intermediate or original files, copy files to an archive location, etc.
The program needs to be able to determine the success and failure of each phase of a job and take appropriate action which would be logging, and possibly other notification, abort further processing on failure, etc.
Jobs need to be configured to activate at certain set times, or at certain intervals (optionally during certain set hours) i.e. every 15 mins from 9:00 - 5:00.
There needs to be a UI to add new jobs.
There needs to be a button to push to fire off a job as if a timer event had activated it.
The standard Display of the program should show an operator what is going on and whether the program is functioning properly.
All of this is predicated on the premise that it is a given that you write your own software. There are several enterprise task scheduler programs available on the market, as well. Buying off the shelf may be a better solution for you.
