How do you change the default format to XML in Symfony? - symfony1

I'm writing a restful XML API for a university assignment, the spec requires no HTML frontend.
There doesn't seem to be any documentation (or guessable functionality) regarding how to change the default format? Whilst thus far I have created all templates as ...Success.xml.php it would be easier to just use the regular ones and set this globally; I really expected this functionality to be configurable from YAML.. yet I have found some hard coded references to the HTML format.
The main issue I'm encountering is that part of the assessment is returning a 404 in a certain way (not as a 404 :/), but importantly it must always return XML, and the default setup of a missing route is a HTML 404 not XML (so it only works when I use forward404 from an action running via a XML route.
So in summary, is there a way to do this / what class(es) do I have to override?

Try putting this in factories.yml

That will still need the template names changing though. It will just mean that urls that don't specify a format will revert to xml instead of html.
You can subclass sfPHPView and override the initialise method to affect this (copy paste the initialise method from sfView) - the lines like this need changing:
if ('html' != $format)

Accept/Content-Type header based processing in Quart and Quart-Schema

Because I am rewriting a legacy app, I cannot change what the clients either send or accept. I have to accept and return JSON, HTML, and an in-house XML-like serialization.
They do, fortunately set headers that describe what they are sending and what they accept.
So right now, what I do is have a decoder module and an encoder module with methods that are basically if/elif/else chains. When a route is ready to process/return something, I call the decoder/encoder module with the python object and the header field, which returns the formatted object as a string and the route processes the result or returns Response().
I am wondering if there is a more Quart native way of doing this.
I'm also trying to figure out how to make this work with Quart-Schema. I see from the docs that one can do app.json_encoder = <class> and I suppose I could sub in a different processor there, but it seems application global, there's no way to set it based on what the client sends. Optimally, it would be great if I could just pass the results of a dynamically chosen parser to Quart-Schema and let it do it's thing on python objects.

You can write your own decorator like the quart-schema #validation_headers(). Inside the decorator, check the header for the Content-Type, parse it, and pass the parsed object to the func(...).

Ruby On Rails - Use "Format" As A URL GET Parameter?

I have a search page where I update the URL params on the page as filters are added or removed by the user. This allows me to deep link into the page (ie. going to /search?location=new+york&time=afternoon will set the location and afternoon filters).
I also have a filter named format. I noticed that passing in ?format=whatevervalue to the URL and then reloading the page with that param causes Rails to return a Completed 406 Not Acceptable error. It seems that format is a reserved Rails URL parameter.
Is there anyway to unreserve this parameter name for a particular endpoint?
In the context of an URL in Ruby on Rails there are at least four reserved parameter names: controller, method, id, format.
You cannot use these keys for anything else than for their intended purpose.
If you try to you will override the value internally set by Rails. In your example by setting ?format=whatevervalue you override the default format (html) and your application will try to find and render a whatevervalue template instead of the html formatted template. This will obviously not work.
Fun fact: Instead of using the default Rails path format like /users/123/edit you could use query parameters instead like this: /?controller=users&id=123&method=edit&format&html.
My suggestion is: Do not try to fight Rails conventions. Whenever you try to work around basic Rails conventions it will hurt you later on because it makes updates more difficult, common gems might break, unexpected side-effects will happen. Just use another name for that parameter.

When do I need to encode with multiple codecs in Grails?

I'm not clear of when (or if) I should use multiple Grails encodeAsXXX calls.

It also says you need to encodeAsURL and then encodeAsHTML, I don't understand why this is necessary in the case shown but not all the time?
Are there other cases I should me using multiple chained encoders?
If I'm rendering a URL to a HTML attribute should I encodeAsURL then encodeAsHTML?
If I'm rendering a URL to a JavaScript variable sent as part of a HTML document (via a SCRIPT element) should I encodeAsURL, encodeAsJavaScript then encodeAsHTML?
If I'm rendering a string to a JavaScript variable sent as part of a HTML document should I encodeAsJavaScript then encodeAsHTML?

I can't see how I can understand what to do here except by finding the source for all the encoders and looking at what they encode and what's valid on the receiving end - but I figure it shouldn't be that hard for a developer and there is probably something simple I'm missing or some instructions I haven't found.

It is certainly important to always consider XSS but in reading your question I think you are overestimating what you need to do. As long as you're using Grails 2.3 or higher and your grails.views.default.codec is set to html which it will be by default, everything rendered in your GSP with ${} will be escaped properly for you.
It is only when you are intentionally bypassing the escaping, such as if you need to get sanitized user input back into valid JavaScript within your GSP for some reason, that you would need to use the encodeAsXXX methods or similar.
I would argue (and the article makes a mention of this as well) that this should raise a smell anyway, as you probably should have that JavaScript encapsulated in a different file or TagLib where the escaping is handled.
Bottom line, use the encoding methods only if you are overriding the default HTML encoding, otherwise ${} handles it for you.

How to access AJAX hash values in ASP.NET MVC?

I'm considering using the hash method to create static urls to content that is managed by ajax calls in a Asp.Net MVC. The proof of concept i'm working on is a profile page /user/profile where one can browse and edit different sections. You could always ask for the following url /user/profile#password to access directly to you profile page, in the change password section
However, i'm wondering if i'm not starting this the bad way, since apparently i can't access the part after the hash in any way, except by declaring a route value for the hash in global.asax. So i'm wondering if this is the right way to access this part of the url?
Am i supposed to declare a route value, or is there another way to work with hash values (a framework, javascript or mvc)?

In pure javascript, i have no problem using the window.location.hash property, i'm not sure though how standard it is in today's browsers, hence the question about a javascript framework/plugin that would use it.
The thing is that the part that follows the hash (#) is never sent to the server into the HTTP request so the server has absolutely no way of reading it. So no need to waste time in searching for something that doesn't exist.
You could on the other hand tune your routes to generate links that contain the hash part so that client scripts can read it.
Send the hash value document.location.hash as a parameter to the controller action of your choice.
This can be done in the code if needed...

What is the simplest way to return different content types based on the extension in the URL?

I'd like to be able to change the extension of a url and recieve the model in a different format.
e.g. if
/products/list
returns a html page containing a list of products, then
/products/list.json
would return them in a json list.
Note: I like the simplicity of the ASP.NET MVC REST SDK, it only requires about 5 lines of code to hook it in, but the format is specified as a query string parameter i.e. /products/list?format=json which is not what I want, I could tweak this code if there are no other options, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel!

You should be able to just use routes in conjunction with the rest sdk
If you have the flexibility to drop Apache or something similar in front of your service, you can always use mod_rewrite to rewrite an external http://products/list.json into http://products/list?format=json which your framework can render more easily.
Instead of "list.json", you could choose "list/json" and use a route like
{controller}/{action}/{id}
Then ProductController.List would be called, with an ID parameter of "json". The .List() action then would decide whether or not to return an HTML view or JSON content.
