I'd like to call an action with a link_to button without being redirected to another page(I don't want ajax). For you to have an idea, I'm trying to accomplish a sort "link button" in a search page. So, when the link is clicked, the page should be refreshed showing the list ordered as I tell it in the action.
If I do the following in my view, it will ask me for a template called as the action, and I don't want it:
<%= link_to 'MÁS RELEVANTES', search_filter_relevance_path %>
My routes file looks like this:
map.search_filter_relevance "/anuncios/buscar", :controller => 'announcements', :action => 'search_filter_relevance'
EDIT:
If I change the above line to:
map.search_filter_relevance "/anuncios/search_filter_lowest_price", :controller => 'announcements', :action => 'search_filter_relevance'
it access to the action I want it to access, but I can't figure out a way to pass the collection of items I have in the view(it's a search result) to the action, so I can filter them.
And my controller looks like this(I haven't developed the functionality yet):
def search_filter_relevance
end
Any help on this will be appreciated.
I believe you should define what you'll render... an action, a partial, nothing?
def search_filter_relevance
render :action => "some_action"
# or
render :partial => "some_partial"
# or
render :nothing => true
end
Something like that...
Maybe you could explain what you want this action to do exactly...

I trying to save the user seleccion in a cookie but I think I'm doing something wrong.
This is link in my view
<%= link_to image_tag("venezuela.png", :height => '74', :width => '111'), {:controller => "landing", :action => "select_country", :country => "venezuela"}, :method => "get" %>
Here is the action of my controller
def select_country
cookies.permanent[:country] = params[:country]
case params[:country]
when "venezuela"
redirect_to "google.co.ve"
end
end
When I make click in the link a get this error:
Unknown action
The action 'show' could not be found for LandingController
and goes to this url
http://localhost:3000/landing/select_country?country=venezuela
Thanks in advance for your help.
Looks like you have a routing problem. Make sure you don't have a route that assumes all links going to /landing/:anything are for the show action ahead of the route that defines select_country as an action on that controller.
So essentially I've setup a route to match "products/:product", which seems to respond to a page like baseurl/products/toaster and displays the toaster product. My problem is I can't seem to use link_to to generate this path, and by that I mean I don't know how. Any help on this?
There are several solutions on this one :
<%= link_to 'Toaster', { :controller => 'products', :action => 'whatever', :product => 'toaster' } %>
But it's not really Rails Way, for that you need to add :as => :product at the end of your route. This will create the product_path helper that can be used this way :
<%= link_to 'Toaster', product_path(:product => 'toaster') %>
Within your routes file you can do something like:
match "products/:product" => "products#show", :as => :product
Where the controller is ProductsController and the view is show
within the Products controller your have
def show
#product = Hub.find_by_name(params[:product])
respond_to do |format|
format.html # show.html.erb
end
end
Where whatever is in the products/:product section will be available via params.
Then, since we used :as in your routes you can do this with link_to:
<%= link_to product(#product) %>
Where #product is an instance of a product or a string. This is just an example and the param can be anything you want, the same goes for controller/action. For more info you should check out this.
Hope this helps!
I am looking to use link_to to call a method in my controller. However, for some odd reason the route looks for the show method.
In my view:
<% #beverages.each do |beverage| %>
..
<%= link_to 'Archive', beverages_archive_path(:id => beverage.id) %>
..
<% end %>
In my config/routes.rb
match 'beverages/archive' => 'beverages#archive'
In my beverages_controller.rb
def archive
beverage = Beverage.find(params[:id])
respond_to do |format|
# format.html # show.html.erb
format.json { render json: beverage }
end
# beverage.update_attribute('archive', true)
end
When I click on the archive link in the view, the URL does change to: http://localhost:3000/beverages/archive?id=11, however I get the following error.
The error I get:
ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound (Couldn't find Beverage with id=archive):
app/controllers/beverages_controller.rb:46:in `show'
Any idea on what I am doing wrong? Your help is much appreciated!
PS. I also looked at Rails 3 link_to delete destory method calls show method?
but nothing seemed to work.
Have you tried this in your routes?
match 'beverages/:id/archive' => 'beverages#archive', as: :beverages_archive
This will create the beverages_archive_path method for you. Also, as you are looking for a specific beverage, use :id inside the route so that it knows where to take the id parameter from.
Apart from that, you can always tell a link specifically which controller and action to link to by doing:
link_to "Label", :controller => :my_controller, :action => :index
Taken from here: Ruby on rails 3 link_to controller and action
Use the other notation (not match) instead.
resources :beverages do
collection do
get :archive
end
end
Try this one out and let me know if something went wrong.
There's not quite enough information here to know why beverages_archive_path works in your app -- one problem is that your routes file does not define a name for your beverages#archive route. What you want is something like:
match 'beverages/archive' => 'beverages#archive', :as => :beverages_archive
or better yet use resourceful routing conventions like so:
resources :beverages do
collection do
get :archive
end
end
What's happening is that you have a beverages#show route that matches /beverages/:id, and this is what /beverages/archive matches (with :id => 'archive').
I'm new to using AJAX in Rails (I know... I know...), and am positive that I'm doing something wrong that's probably just the wrong call or something. But I've hunted and can't seem to find it.
Anyway, I'm rendering out quick partial (this is working right) and then I want to refresh it with an AJAX call. Here's what I thought would work:
<div id="two_on_two"><%= render :partial => "quickread" %></div>
<p><%=link_to_remote "load two new stories", :url => {:partial => 'quickread'}, :update => 'two_on_two' %></p>
that just blows out the page (a quick flash and then just a blank browser window). If I switch from :partial to :action in that AJAX call, then it dynamically loads a "template missing" in that two_on_two div.
Clearly, there's something easy I'm missing here, right?
Thank you so much!
First, read api:
http://apidock.com/rails/ActionView/Helpers/PrototypeHelper/link_to_remote
You should specify your url correctly (controller, action, other params, not partial!) and define your RJS in controller action.
IE:
index.html.erb
<div id='two_on_two'></div>
link_to_remote 'Link Name', :url => {:controller => "bar", :action => "baz"}
bars_controller.rb
def baz
respond_to do |format|
format.js{ render :update do |page|
page.replace_html 'two_on_two', 'Hello world!'
end}
end
end
So when you will click Link Name, in your two_on_two div will appear "Hello world text".
I'm using form_remote_tag(:url => {:controller => "home", :action => "search"}, :update => "mydiv"). When I click submit on the form "mydiv" is populated with the error "Template is missing. Missing template home/search.erb in view path app/views". I've tried multiple render options in def search, but they all result in the same error.
It looks like the search method is trying to use it's default render even though I'm specifying what I want.
I've tried:
render 'index'
render :text => 'Return this from my method!'
Is my url incorrect? Is it not submitting back to my home controller's search method?
Try
render :action => 'index'
this will use "index.rhtml" or "index.html.erb".
I will try to explain why it said search.erb is not found, lets take create action for a some model, if there is some error in my create action they it will throw missing template create.html.erb file, since you have some error in your create action rails will try to render the create.html.erb in the page. Hope I explained it clearly.
In an ajax action you can't use redirect_to or render options directly.
try using this in your search action
render :update do |page|
page.replace_html "ur_div_id","partial"
end
The form_remote_tag needs prototype to function. Make sure you are including the :defaults for your javascript libraries namely prototype.
<%= javascript_include_tag :defaults %>
