So I have Visual Studio 2003 running on Windows 7 - yeah I am aware it isn't officially supported - and no, unfortunately I can't change that situation :-(
For the most part it works OK but I have a specific problem, that I can't figure out. The application hangs if you do a project wide search (Ctrl - Shift - F) for a string.
I have a reasonably powerful machine and all the other heavy tasks like compiling and debugging all work fine. It also works if I restrict the search to the current document (Ctrl - F). I am running it as administrator and VS.NET 2003 SP1 has been applied.
The size of the project does not seem to be a problem since a colleague is also experiencing this issue for a single project solution containing 5 pages.
I am currently using Windows Search as a work-around and I was wondering if there is something I missed that I should try.
Try disabling the Aero theme in compatibility. Yeah seriously...
You can do this by right clicking the shortcut to launch VS.NET 2003 and selecting properties, choosing the “Compatibility” sub-tab and then checking “Disable Desktop Compositing” as well as “Disable Visual Themes”
I use Windows 8.1, and the path
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]
is invisible and could not be created manually inside regedit.exe.
So I wrote a registry file "abc.reg" with text:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]
"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\\Common7\\IDE\\devenv.exe"="^ RUNASADMIN DISABLEDWM DISABLETHEMES"
Execute it by double click icon of "abc.reg" (may be Run As "Administrator").
It works.

I am running Windows 10 Enterprise 1909 and found global search also causes VS2003 to freeze and stop responding.
The advised registry edit did not work for me - VS2003 refuses to start up when run as admin:
A referral was returned from the server.
This is the same error I get if allowing the compatibility trouble-shooter to apply Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
I can get global search working if I remove RUNASADMIN and DISABLEDWM from the registry value (I.E. leave only DISABLETHEMES in place).
Create a registry key as follows:
Location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
New: String Value
Name: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe
Value: ^ DISABLETHEMES
You will end up with an even uglier UI (quite an achievement in itself!) but at least global search will now work.

but when i compile my project, delphi does not generate any exe file.
also when i try to run application i get this error:

note: i haven't changed any configuration or settings of Delphi or project.

It was about getting absolute path because i'd changed ProgramFilesPath and ProgramFilesDir in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion to D: without leading backslash.
I changed it to D:\ and the problem was solved now

If you're on Vista or later, this could be because of UAC settings. Try setting the project output folder in Project->Options to something a limited account would have access to, such as somewhere under My Documents\RAD Studio\Projects.
I've had the same problem on Windows 7.
Installing it as administrator solved the problem IIRC.
If that doesn't work then make sure you run it as administrator.
You are running it on XP though, so unless you've installed it as a non-administrator, or run it as a non-administrator this shouldn't be happening.
Note that if you're in a domain, it's possible that you're not local admin on your XP machine.
Run Process Explorer, search for any open handles to C:\test\Project1.exe using Find, Find handle or dll.
That will tell you what is locking your .exe.

I have developed an app for computers a while back, that generates a word document and saves it automatically under a name provided by the software.
The application has worked perfectly in windows xp and windows 7. But now it needed to be moved to a windows 8.1 computer and since the generating works perfectly. But the save command wrdDoc.SaveAs(SaveToFile); does not work.
Basically what happens, is on that command's execution a save dialog appears and you can save the document yourself. After you click save. You get an error command failed with no further details.
Is there anything that has changed since windows 7 that prevents this code from executing properly?
The old computer used the following:
windows 7
office 2007/2010/2013(all were used at some point in time)
New computer:
windows 8.1
office 2010
UPDATE:
it is also worth noting, the dialog does not show any of the word documents in the folder if i browse there... Can this be a hint to the problem?

I managed to find the problem. It's a brand new laptop, and Acer had a bunch of crap installed that sync's with office and explore. Once i uninstalled that the software returned to working normally...

It depends on your word version. Only 2007 has a "Saveas" method for the document object (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb221597%28v=office.12%29.aspx). The later versions (2010 and 2013) only have a "Saveas2" Method (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff836084.aspx)
Here is the problem I've met:
Working in BDS 2006 IDE, my older computer gone, new ( i7 mount ) has been built and it has Windows 7 Ult OS 64bit, where 2006 was installed and QuickReports Pro as well as eDocEngine, FIB+, TMS, LMD, ZEOS & DB Comparer Component Packs - I use them in my products.
On computer I have Office 2010 installed as well, by default in 32bit version and Adobe CS6. That's it.
After installation I tried few times reinstall RAD 2009 and anyway, always the same problem, to simplify it is 100% reproducable like that:
Create new Delphi VCL Forms application ;
Click File / New / Other and goto, say, "Delphi files" and select Frame or DataModule. When new file is created, all the time we have message:
"Stack overflow - save your work and restart Delphi for Microsoft Windows"
After that IDE set in bad state and next F12 ( show VCL designer) closes Delphi with General Error.
Any idea what happens?
As I said, I tried few time uninstall - install 2006, start in any personality, use / do not use any of the updates or IDE fixes from Andy's site, nothing helps.

You can try running a second instance of the IDE in the debugger.
Create an empty dll or package project.
Open Run > Parameters
Set the host application to $(BDS)\bin\BDS.exe
Then just hit F9 to run the second instance of the IDE in the debugger. After that just follow the steps to reproduce the problem and wait for the exception. If all goes well you'll get a complete call stack to step through.
Note: You may see various other exceptions occurring as the IDE loads. These are normal and can usually be ignored.
Also you didn't mention what version of Windows was on your old machine. If it was Windows XP Uwe could be right. XP was a little more lax on security by default than Vista or 7. The new default is to restrict write access to any folder under Program Files. If that turns out to be the problem you can adjust the write permissions for $(BDS) for whatever user account you use for development.
Delete de PackageCache in Embarcadero registry entries. Its not a complete solution but worked for me.

I have no BDS 2006 at hand, but is it possible that the default folder for new projects is located below the Program Files folder? In that case there might be no write access to that folder.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the compatibility setting on Windows 7 for the Delphi/Paradox Database desktop program so that it displays properly in Windows 7 (x64)?
We've tried quite a few combinations of selections on the Compatibility tab on the .exe's Properties screen. But, none of them have eliminated fixed our problem:
It runs fine, but the buttons on the structuring screens are missing their text and are not clickable. The work-around is to use the keyboard shortcuts for these buttons, but obviously, although workable, that's not ideal.
Pre-emptive prose: Yes, we know we're on risky ground and need to migrate away from Paradox, which in some future version of Windows will not be supported. (But, we've got a million+ lines of code and migration won't be easy...)
I can confirm that disabling UAC and moving Database Desktop out out C:\Program Files makes buttons work again.

Try running it with UAC disabled.
Make sure you have all the BWCC-dlls and stuff in the right places too.
On Windows XP, check which fonts is uses, make sure those fonts are installed too.
Nothing worked for me with Delphi 5 Database Desktop on Windows 8, until I realized that I had also installed it through the Delphi 4 setup - and that version of DBD opens fine for me. Hope this helps!

don't use delphi menu to open desktop database but just navigate to this directory
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\Database Desktop"
and run DBD32.EXE
you can also create a shortcut to it on desktop or quick launch on taskbar
