I'm still new to the whole CDN ideaology, so this might be a stupid question but I'm sure someone can shed some light on this. I've got a basic php script that takes user image uploads, resizes them, creates a directory ($user_id), and stores the finished product in the directory (like www.mysite.com/uploads/$user_id/image1.jpg). Works like a charm.
I just got all the hosting stuff squared away and I'm using the Rackspace (Slicehost?) "Cloud Server" architecture. I also signed up for the Rackspace (Mosso?) "Cloud Files". So far so good.
So my question is: Should I be storing the images that users upload locally (on my apache server) or as objects via Cloud Files? It seems like a great idea to separate the static content from my web server so I can just use it to generate the dynamic content. But would it be a lot of overhead to create a CDN-enabled Container each time a user uploads an image?
Hopefully I'm not missing the boat on this one totally. I can't seem to find a whole lot of info about this, but I'm sure there is a good reason why I should either pursue or avoid this idea. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
I am not familiar with Rackspace's offering, but the general logic behind using a CDN for static content is to achieve two goals:
offload the bandwidth and processing
to other servers, freeing up yours.
move the requests off to the client
Move the large static content closer
to the client
When you send the generated HTML to the browser, it will "see" the images as www.yourdomain.com/my_image.jpg for example, and perform additional requests for each piece of static content, potentially starving your server of threads to service requests. If you move all this content onto a CDN, the browser would see something like cdn.yourdomain.com, and the browser will request the images from the CDN, thus allowing your server to service other requests instead. Additionally, most CDN's distribute your content to multiple locations and have geographic routing for requests to serve the content from the closest possible location, improving the perceived load time for clients.

I'm planning to upload images to facebook to my account first, get their "src" and then show them in my Rails app where img src will point to the location of the images at facebook that I've uploaded them.
Is there overhead in this approach as opposed having images in my own website? Will that slow down the server? And will this approach do in general? Is it legal?
No there is no overhead, in fact this could actually speed up your app by reducing the load of request your server will receive. This is basically like using a distributed CDN for your javascript and css.
Typically your rails server will serve an html response with links to css, javascript, and images. The user's browser then starts rendering this html and will make requests when it encounters these links. If all these links point back to your server, then your rails server has to handle serving these static assets (and it can only handle so many requests per second).
In production its common to put your assets on a CDN such as Amazon Web Services to decrease the load on your rails server. As long as your facebook image is public, I believe this is actually a good idea.
I'm having a problem getting the caching I need to work using CloudFlare.
We use CloudFlare for caching all our assets on S3 which works 100% using a separate subdomain cdn
We also use CloudFlare for our main site (hosted on Heroku) as well, e.g. www
My problem is I can't get CloudFlare to cache PDFs that are generated from our Rails app. I'm using the WickedPDF gem to dynamically generate certain PDFs for invoices, etc. I don't want to upload these as files to say S3 but we would like to have CloudFlare cache these so they don't get generated each and every time, as the time spent generating these PDFs is a little intensive.
CloudFlare is turned on and is "accelerating" for the subdomain in question and we're using SSL, but PDFs never seem to cache properly.
Is there something else we need to do to ensure these get cached? Or maybe there's another solution that would work for Heroku? (eg we can't use Page caching since it relies on the filesystem) I also checked the WickedPDF documentation so see if we could do anything else, but found nothing about expire controls.

We should actually cache it as long as the resources are on-domain & not being delivered through a third-party resource in some way.
Keep in mind:
1. Our caching depends on the number of requests for the resources (at least three).
2. Caching is very much data center dependent (in other words, if your site receives a lot of traffic at a data center it is going to be cached; if your site doesn't get a lot of traffic in another data center it may not cache).
I would open a support ticket if you're still having issues.
I need to serve files through grails, only users with permission have access, so I cant serve them with a static link to a container. The system is able to stream binary files to the client without problems,but now (for bandwidth performance issues on the client) I need to implement segmented or partial downloads in the controllers.
Theres a plugin or proven solution to this problem?
May be some kind of tomcat/apache plugin to restrict access to files with certain rules or temporal tickets so I can delegate the "resume download" or "segmented download" problem to the container.
Also i need to log and save stats on the downloads of the users.
I need good performance so, I think doing this in the controller is not good idea.

There is a plugin for apache - https://tn123.org/mod_xsendfile/ It doesn't matter what you're using behind apache at this case. By using this plugin you will respond with special header X-SENDFILE, with path to file to serve, and Apache will take care about actual file downloading for current request.
If you're using Nginx, you have to use X-Accel-Redirect header, see http://wiki.nginx.org/XSendfile
I have seen quite a few code samples/plugins that promote uploading assets directly to S3. For example, if you have a user object with an avatar, the file upload field would load directly to S3.
The only way I see this being possible is if the user object is already created in the database and your S3 bucket + path is something like
user_avatars.domain.com/some/id/partition/medium.jpg
But then if you had an image tag that tried to access that URL when an avatar was not uploaded, it would yield a bad result. How would you handle checking for existence?
Also, it seems like this would not work well for most has many associations. For example, if a user had many songs/mp3s, where would you store those and how would you access them.
Also, your validations will be shot.
I am having trouble thinking of situations where direct upload to S3 (or any cloud) is a good idea and was hoping people could clarify either proper use cases, or tell me why my logic is incorrect.
Why pay for storage/bandwidth/backups/etc. when you can have somebody in the cloud handle it for you?
S3 (and other Cloud-based storage options) handle all the headaches for you. You get all the storage you need, a good distribution network (almost definitely better than you'd have on your own unless you're paying for a premium CDN), and backups.
Allowing users to upload directly to S3 takes even more of the bandwidth load off of you. I can see the tracking concerns, but S3 makes it pretty easy to handle that situation. If you look at the direct upload methods, you'll see that you can force a redirect on a successful upload.
Amazon will then pass the following to the redirect handler: bucket, key, etag
That should give you what you need to track the uploaded asset after success. Direct uploads give you the best of both worlds. You get your tracking information and it unloads your bandwidth.

If you are hosting your Rails application on Heroku, the reason could very well be that Heroku doesn't allow file-uploads larger than 4MB:

So if you would like your users to be able to upload large files, this is the only way forward.
Remember how web servers work.
Unless you're using a sort of async web setup like you could achieve with Node.JS or Erlang (just 2 examples), then every upload request your web application serves ties up an entire process or thread while the file is being uploaded.
Imagine that you're uploading a file that's several megabytes large. Most internet users don't have tremendously fast uplinks, so your web server spends a lot of time doing nothing. While it's doing all of that nothing, it can't service any other requests. Which means your users start to get long delays and/or error responses from the server. Which means they start using some other website to get the same thing done. You can always have more processes and threads running, but each of those costs additional memory which eventually means additional $.
By uploading straight to S3, in addition to the bandwidth savings that Justin Niessner mentioned and the Heroku workaround that Thomas Watson mentioned, you let Amazon worry about that problem. You can have a single-process webserver effectively handle very large uploads, since it punts that actual functionality over to Amazon.
So yeah, it's more complicated to set up, and you have to handle the callbacks to track things, but if you deal with anything other than really small files (and even in those cases), why cost yourself more money?

I am trying to reduce the load on my webservers by adding an "Image server" (a dedicated server for handling image requests), and redirecting all requests for .gif,.jpg,.png etc., to it.
My question is, what is the best way to handle the redirection?
At the firewall level? (can I do this using iptables?)
At the load balancer level? (can ldirectord handle this?)
At the apache level - using rewrite rules?
Thanks for any suggestions on the best way to do this.

One thing I would add is that these are domains that are hosted for 3rd parties, so I can't expect all the developers to modify their code and point their images to another server.
The further up the chain you can do it, the better.
Ideally, do it at the DNS level by using a different domain for your images (eg imgs.example.com)
If you can afford it, get someone else to do it by using a CDN (Content delivery network).

There are also 2 featuers of apache's mod_rewrite that you might want to look at. They are all described well at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/misc/rewriteguide.html.
The first is under the heading "Dynamic Miror" in the above document, that uses the mod_rewrite Proxy flag [p]. This lets your server silently fetch files from another domain and return them.
The second is to just redirect the request to the new domain. This second option puts less strain on your server, but requests still need to come in and it slows down the final rendering of the page, as each request needs to make an essentially redundant request to your server first.
i agree with rikh. If you want images to be served from a different webserver, then serve them on a different web-server. For example:

<IMG src="http://brettnesbitt.akamia-technologies.com/images/Brett.jpg">
Any kind of load balancer will still feed the image from the web-server's pipe, which is what you're trying to avoid.
i, of course, know what you really want. What you really want is for any request like:
GET images/Brett.jpg HTTP/1.1
to automatically get converted into:
HTTP/1.1 307 Temporary Redirect
Location: http://brettnesbitt.akamia-technologies.com/images/Brett.jpg
this way you don't have to do any work, except copy the images to the other web-server.
That i really don't know how to do.
By using the phrase "NAT", it implies that the firewall/router receives HTTP requests, and you want to forward the request to a different internal server if the HTTP request was for image files.
This then begs the question about what you're actually trying to save. No matter which internal web-server services the HTTP request, the data is still going to have to flow through the firewall/router's pipe.
The reason i bring it up is because the common scenario when someone wants to serve images from a different server is because they want to split up high-bandwidth, mostly static, low-CPU cost content from their actual logic.
Only using NAT to re-write the packet and send it to a different server will not work towards that common issue.
The other reason might be because images are not static content on your system, and a request to
GET images/Brett.jpg HTTP/1.1
actually builds an image on the fly, with a high-CPU cost, or only using with data available (i.e. SQL Server database) to ServerB.
If this is the case then i would still use a different server name on the image request:
GET http://www.brettsoft.com/default.aspx HTTP/1.1
GET http://imageserver.brettsoft.com/images/Brett.jpg HTTP/1.1
i understand what you're hoping for, with network packet inspection to override the NAT rule and send it to another server - i've never seen any such thing that can do that.
It sounds more "proxy-ish", where the web-proxy does this. (i.e. pfSense and m0n0wall can't do it)
Which then leads to a kind of solution we used once: a custom web-server that analyzes the request, makes the appropriate request off some internal server, and binary writes the response to the client.
That pain in the ass solution was insisted upon by a "security consultant", who apparently believes in security through obscurity.
i know IIS cannot do such things for you itself - i don't know about other web-server products.
i just asked around, and apparently if you wanted to write a custom kernel module for you linux based router, you could have it inspect packets and take appropriate action. Such a module might exist. There are, apparently, plenty of other open-sourced modules to use as a starting point.
But i'd rather shoot myself in the head.
