How do I (in my controller) send a pdf that opens in the browser. I have tried this but it only downloads the file (both ie and firefox) without asking.

You need to set the Content disposition HTTP header to inline to indicate to the browser that it should try to use a PDF plugin if it is available.
Something like: Content-Disposition: inline; filename=test.pdf
Note that you cannot force the use of the plugin, it is a decision made by the browser.
This (in addition to the other headers) does the trick for me in a plain .net web app:
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", String.Format("inline;filename=""{0}""", FileName))
I'm not familiar with MVC, but hopefully this helps.
I think this relies on how the client handles PDF files. If it has setup to let Adobe Reader open the files in the browser plugin it will do that, but maybe you have set it up to download the file rather than opening it.
In any case, there is no way of controlling how PDF files will be opened on the user's machine.

I'm all new to Xamarin and I'm currently working on a sample or a "prove of concept" app using Xamarin.Forms.
I'm supposed to perform a print task from this app though I'm not at this point sure what to print yet (the screen, content of a label, a file etc.).
Either way, what is the easiest way to print from a Xamarin.Forms app?
(current target is primarily Android 4.4+).
I hope this isn't too complicated :)

Ok let me just update this post as the original text might be a bit ambitious/vague.
I have a Xamarin.Forms project (+ an Android part) and I have some HTML available in the XF part of the project that I need to get into a WebView and print it.
From what I understand, the thing with the WebView has to be done on the Android part of the project due to the fact that this is where the printing will be handled.
I was hoping this could be done from code since I don't really need to display the WebView, just print it's content.
The Android part of the project has only the MainActivity and no layouts or XAML files.
I don't know where to add the WebView or how to access it (other than DependecyService seems to be a buzz word here) so I'm kinda stuck here.
I'm thinking that this task should be rather trivial to someone with a little more Xamarin experience than me.
Every platform XF supports has it's own mechanism for printing. XF does not provide any abstractions for printing in a cross-platform manner. You will need to write printing logic for each layer and expose it to XF using DependencyService (or some other DI engine).

Using EmbeddedResource as a source for a Xamarin.Forms.WebView
This is sort of an experimental feature I’ve built that I’ve found it useful. As such the documentation is sparse. It allow you to put HTML content in a folder in your app’s EmbeddedResources folder and then use it as a source for a WebView. A much nicer solution than using platform specific approach provided by Xamarin. It also supports putting all of the HTML content into a zip file. Please take a look at the source code to see how it works.
You can handle the printing of lists/ invoices .. with the xfinium pdf component from xamarin componentstore. With that you create your _pdffile and then call the following method which starts the adobereader from where you can select a printer (in my case google cloudprint)

For something which seems so simple I can't find a solution, I have a word .doc file which I want to be linked on one of my pages so that a user can click on a link and open/download it (whichever is easier) and then read it on the machine with MS word.
Right now I have it in my content folder and tried to display it in both an and but no luck.
Is this an issue of IIS or just I'm going about this all wrong?

I'm new to search engines and web crawlers. Now I want to store all the original pages in a particular web site as html files, but with Apache Nutch I can only get the binary database files. How do I get the original html files with Nutch?
Does Nutch support it? If not, what other tools can I use to achieve my goal.(The tools that support distributed crawling are better.)
Well, nutch will write the crawled data in binary form so if if you want that to be saved in html format, you will have to modify the code. (this will be painful if you are new to nutch).
If you want quick and easy solution for getting html pages:
If the list of pages/urls that you intend to have is quite low, then better get it done with a script which invokes wget for each url.
OR use HTTrack tool.
EDIT:
Writing a your own nutch plugin will be great. Your problem will get solved plus you can contribute to nutch by submitting your work !!! If you are new to nutch (in terms of code & design), then you will have to invest lot of time building a new plugin ... else its easy to do.

Start with Fetcher.java. See lines 647-648. That is the place where you can get the fetched content on per url basis (for those pages which got fetched successfully).

but looks like they are not compatible with windows services.

It's perfect library for work with rackspce. I am use it. And i am sure that it's not problem to use this library inside of windows service. But i think possible problems with .net framework client profile and com.mosso.cloudfiles.dll. But try first with client profile.
Also i use following code to upload files to Rackspace(Configuration it's my configuration class. Instead of 'Configuration.RackSpaceUserName' and 'Configuration.RackSpaceKey' use yous own creadentials):

I you don't want to use com.mosso.cloudfiles.dll very easy create you own driver for rackspace. Because actually for upload file to rackspace you just need send put request with 'X-Auth-Token' header. Also you can check request structure using plugin for firefox to view and upload files to Rackspace and firebug.

I've been around this for about one hour and weird things are happening into VS2010. Although I have referenced the dll and intellisense is working, cannot compile.
It looks like the referenced dll disappears. So, my recomendation in case you go into the same issue, use rack space for .NET 3.5: csharp-cloudfiles-DOTNETv3.5-bin-2.0.0.0.zip
Just be sure to change your project to the same framework version. It works really good.

ASP.NET has four different types of file results:
FileContentResult: Sends the contents of a binary file to the response.
FilePathResult: Sends the contents of a file to the response
FileResult: Returns binary output to write to the response
FileStreamResult: Sends binary content to the response by using a Stream instance
Those descriptions are take from MSDN and with the exception of the FileStreamResult the first three sound identical. So what is the difference between them?
FileResult is an abstract base class for all the others.
FileContentResult - you use it when you have a byte array you would like to return as a file
FilePathResult - when you have a file on disk and would like to return its content (you give a path)
FileStreamResult - you have a stream open, you want to return its content as a file
However, you'll rarely have to use these classes - you can just use one of Controller.File overloads and let ASP.NET MVC do the magic for you.
Great question...and deserves more details. I find myself here as a result of an interesting situation. We were delivering some pdf attachments via the MVC3/C# environment. Our code got released and we started getting some responses from our clients that the downloads were behaving strangely when they were using Chrome and the file type was being converted over to 'pdf-, attachment.pdf-, attachment'. Yup...you got it...the whole thing. So, one could rewrite it to just be 'pdf' and the file would still save intact, but what a mess!
So, to describe the initial situation, we were setting the 'Content-Disposition' header then returning a FileContentResult...

Then came the Fiddler.
With FileContentResult, I got 2 Content-Dispositions in the header.
With FileStreamResult, I got 1.
FileContentResult appends a Content-Disposition header when providing the File Name and Chrome considers multiples of this header as an error.
Odd reaction...but definitely one that's good to know.
