I am developing a food recipe app but got stuck and have a problem with javascript and css(Tailwind) assets. Both Javascript and new tailwinf codes not compiling at all. It was fine before but when i was deleting carrierwave gem i accidentally remove public/assets folder because i was going to use active storage for that purpose(image uploading), now even if i do rails assets:precompile, it doesn't change anything. Old tailwind codes works just fine but newly written tailwind codes that i didn't use before doesn't work even if i run server with ./bin/dev. I don't know which part of my code should i share so i can share GitHub link of my project. Thanks it advance.
I was following this guide for uploading images with PaperClip over ActiveAdmin:
File upload with Activeadmin Rails using paperclip
Everything is working fine, but I was wondering, after I upload image, how to redirect it to be uploaded into /assets/images/ instead only in database?
You don't.
It won't work anyway. assets/images is a source directory for rails asset pipeline. On your production server, the images are not used from there but from another folder where they have been updated by the pipeline (typically getting a name with a linked timestamp, so that the browsers can cache them properly).
To make this work you would need to upload them to the assets/images, then run again the asset pipeline, which would be... weird.
If you don't want to store them in the public folder, look at an external storage like S3 (sample using Heroku: https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/paperclip-s3).
I'm using Rich Editor for my Ruby on Rails app. And I'm have a problem when I'm deploying my code to Heroku. When I'm deploy new code to Heroku, all old assets removes. Also, all uploaded images by Rich Editor too removes. Maybe, I'm forgot to set some settings?
Thanks!
There are multiple reasons for this kind of issue. Typically it is either has to do with the way Heroku precompiles the assets or that the CSS is not pointing to the proper file if the asset is stored on S3.
One such being this:
http://natashatherobot.com/rails-4-heroku-assets-not-found-css-image/
Another being this:
Can't get CSS working on Heroku using Rails 4 with bootstrap-sass gem
Edit
Okay. It looks like you need to change the way you are managing your assets.
One solution is to use S3. A good explanation on how to do that: https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/s3
I haven't used this gem but it looks promising:
https://github.com/rumblelabs/asset_sync
Another solution is to keep your local asset file in synch with production. You could do this by pulling down a copy of your asset directory from heroku each time you do development.
I am new to rails so this is probably a simple question about using the asset pipeline.
In my app, I want to use this jquery plugin: http://www.fyneworks.com/jquery/star-rating/
So to do it, I included the following gem in my gemfile: https://github.com/RichGuk/jquery-star-rating-rails
However, I find that the image used for the star ratings is too low resolution and I'd also like to change the style. However, all 3 versions of the stars that are displayed are held in one image so I'd have to play around with the scripts as well to make sure they are configured properly if I make the image for the stars larger.
Back to my question: How do I edit this image file in my application?
I've tried downloading all the files and putting them in my vender directory and editing the file but it did not seem to work.
I know the files are included by the gem but how do make the files visible to edit?
Appreciate the help!
So the asset pipeline consists of potentially many directories (assuming you are using gems that inject their own assets into the pipeline). When an asset is being grabbed in Rails, Rails goes through these directories (in the same order, every time) to find the asset. When the name of the file is first found, that's it, Rails grabs it and uses that file.
Vendor asset directories are specified after app assets, I believe. So, if you place the image that you want to change in the app/assets/images folder, you'll essentially be overriding that vendor image in your application with your own image since Rails will search it's own app/assets first. Obviously, the files need to be named the same.
Try adding your star image in your assets path. It seem to
reference star.gif using the asset_path
I would also try
overriding the star plugin by creating your own css file.
Going nuts here. I'm developing a rails app, and I'm using the twitter-bootstrap-rails gem in order to include the Twitter Bootstrap styles in my app. This gem generates a file called 'bootstrap_and_overrides.css.less' in app/assets/stylesheets, which I have been using to modify some of the bootstrap variables and include my own CSS overrides.
Everything has been working fine until today. For some reason, the changes I am making to this file today are getting saved to the file, but Rails is still serving the old version of the file! I've searched and found no precompiled versions of the file anywhere (nothing in public/assets)...only the one in assets/stylesheets which I have been modifying. Everything looks fine as far as the directories within the app go, but then when I start the rails server, load the page, and use the element inspector to look at the stylesheets, it's using an old version of 'bootstrap_and_overrides.css.less' with rules that I have deleted. I've turned of the cache in my browser, and tried it in 4 different browsers too, so I'm pretty sure this isn't a result of browser caching.
The rails asset pipeline just seems to serving a version of the file that doesn't exist! Does anybody have any ideas why this might be happening?
Fixed it.
The asset pipeline was storing a cached version in tmp/cache.
I ran rake tmp:clear, which deleted all the files in there, and then rails served the version of *bootstrap_and_overrides.css.less* that I wanted.
Why the cached version suddenly stopped getting updated is beyond me. Arrghhhh!
