I want to use arrayformula or filter like with the result of a list of numbers. My question is how to place at the bottom a total of the preceding numbers. The challenge is this is dynamically sized. So when I try to include an option to sum the numbers it doesn't work.
What complicates this even further I would then want to include some numbers below this that aren't included in the sum.
What I tried was this:
={"title"; ArrayFormula; sum of previous cells}
Projects
Title
P1
1
P2
2
P3
1
P4
2
Total
6
Edit: An example that I've used that didn't work out is this:
={arrayformula(if(filter($A2:$A,$A2:A<>"",$A2:$A<>"Total Sum",$A2:$A<>"(to be hired)")="","",{countifs('org 1'!$F$2:$F$1000),"="&filter($A2:$A,$A2:$A<>""),'org 1'!$A$2:$A$1000"),"<>(to be hired)")}));"Total hired"}
Edit:
Here's an example link:

I'm using multiple tabs as a reflection to what I'm working with. The tab everything's suppose to show is the Indirect example tab.
I'm using the Source tab as a reference for the tabs I'm targeting. The data tabs is the place I'm drawing the info from.
I'm thinking that I won't be able to do this with ArrayFormula. Probably with Query instead. Not sure what it would look like. If ArrayFormula won't work then a query example would be nice.
see:
={"title"; FILTER(A:A, A:A<>""); SUM(A:A)}
={QUERY({A1:B}, "where Col1 is not null label Col2'title'"); "Total:", SUM(B:B)}

I have a google sheet with multiple tabs, one of the tabs is for holding each observation of data while another needs to combine data based on certain criteria. I am trying to use a SUMIFS within and ARRAYFORMULA to get the correct information and it will only pull "0" no matter what I try.
I have set up a test google sheet with some dummy information to show an example of what I need to do in a more complex situation.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JLyEuVijQ8MvfOKrtbRD_YKmRDnTCxf7qCSw9Ggty_Y/edit#gid=1250575550
In this example, the data tab is the individual observations and the sums tab is where I'm trying to pull combinations. I need column D to sum the totals in column E on the data tab if the Month and Year and Type all match what is on the sums sheet. In this example, cell D3 on the sums tab should equal 11.
you cannot use SUMIFS() in Arrayformula(), along with many other functions, though there is no formal documented list.
In your case you can use a SUMIF() instead by &'ing the condtions together.
I've demoed the concept on a new tab called MK_Help in cell D2:
=ARRAYFORMULA(IF(ROW(A2:A) = ROW(A2), "# TOTAL TYPE", IF(A2:A = "", , SUMIF(data!A:A&data!B:B&data!C:C,A2:A&B2:B&C2:C,data!E:E))))
Note that I made a couple of other small changes to your formula.
Namely, that you should always use a true "empty" instead of double quotes in your IF() mask up front tor return empty when there's no value in A. Double quotes("") is actually not quite empty for many other things in Google sheets.
Also I modified your header conndition from ROW(A2:A)=2 to ROW(A2:A) = ROW(A2). I find that this is a more flexible condition for the header as it allows you to potentially insert/delete rows above the header without breaking things.
It seems QUERY() may be good choice. Try-
=QUERY(data!A2:E,"select A,B,C, sum(E) where A is not null group by A,B,C",1)
If you need specific month then you can add criteria to where clause like-
=QUERY(data!A2:E,"select A,B,C, sum(E) where A =5 group by A,B,C",1)
I have a quite complext formula (i mean that is complex to me) that Tom Sharpe helped me building to aggregate values and ordering them by months in a row(you can find the details in the original post but i think you'll only need the final formula which is:
=ArrayFormula(mmult(sequence(1,counta(A2:A),1,0), if((C2:index(C:C,counta(C:C))<=eomonth(G2,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,0)))* (D2:index(D:D,counta(D:D))>=eomonth(G2,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,0))),E2:index(E:E,counta(E:E)),0)))
and here is the result -> [J1:U1]
Now, what i would need to do as the final step is to be able to group data by a certain label (John or Jane in the example) on separate rows, but mantaining the order/aggregate by month on the row. On the example, this would mean having one row with only 'John' data and below, one with 'Jane' values.
I am struggling to understand how to adapt the formula to do so.
I have tried:
Using another array to first return a list of these labels with query(unique()) or something like that, but then i struggle looping in it with the other formula.
A bit more simplistic but it could work after all: on the 1st row (the cell next to where the data will be returned) writing 'John', on row 2 'Jane' and then using filter() to only pull data that matches. The 'John, Jane' value is for the example but the real labels won't be that many, the list of labels don't need to be dynamic.
The thing with these solutions is that they work when used separately, but i can't figure out how to nest this in the first arrayformula() that Tom helped me with...As i am just beginning with the google sheets queries.
I don't really need necessarily the complete formula/code but maybe just directions or tips to visualize the way i could solve this.
Thanks to all who might contribute
With hindsight I might have done better to go down the route of using a query to calculate the sums on my previous answer rather than Mmult.
This uses the same method as before to create a 2d array of amounts vs dates (going across) and individuals (going down). Then it uses Textjoin to generate a query to group by name with the required number of columns.
=ArrayFormula(query({A2:A,if((C2:C<=eomonth(G2,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,0)))* (D2:D>=eomonth(G2,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,0))),E2:E,0)},
"select Col1,sum(Col"&textjoin("),sum(Col",,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,2))&") where Col1 is not null group by Col1"))
This is the generated query
select Col1,sum(Col2),sum(Col3),sum(Col4),sum(Col5),sum(Col6),sum(Col7),sum(Col8),sum(Col9),sum(Col10),sum(Col11),sum(Col12),sum(Col13) where Col1 is not null group by Col1
Ideally there should be an extra section saying label sum(Col2) '' etc. to suppress the 'Sum' headers.
=ArrayFormula(query({A2:A,if((C2:C<=eomonth(G2,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,0)))* (D2:D>=eomonth(G2,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,0))),E2:E,0)},
"select Col1,sum(Col"&textjoin("),sum(Col",,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,2))&") where Col1 is not null group by Col1 label sum(Col" & textjoin(") '', sum(Col",,sequence(1,datedif(G2,H2,"M")+1,2)) & ") ''"))
I have two tabs in a sheet, that have different ranges. One is preset data, the other is an import from a program we use. I'm trying to figure out a way, if possible, to pull specific data from sheet 1, and match it with values in sheet two, that aren't sorted the same.
Example sheet
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OsSWQ_48VrcTU3pXGeJ_1syluKPVeVRune39UA9I3x4/edit?usp=sharing
I'm trying the formula =sort(filter(Sheet1!B1:B,match(B1:B, Sheet1!B1:B ,0)),2,TRUE), but it's just putting the results in order. If I replace the column # on the sort with 1, it sorts it out of order but it doesn't match column B, like I need it to.
The documents i'm working with are 2000+ rows each, I'd rather not manually do this if at all possible.
Please assist? Either way, thank you for reading.
Try:
=arrayformula(iferror(vlookup(MATCH( B1:B,Sheet1!$B$1:B,0),{(ROW(Sheet1!A1:A)),Sheet1!A1:A},2,0)))
Explanation
step#1 =arrayformula(MATCH( B1:B,Sheet1!$B$1:B,0)) will give the row where each value column B will be found in Sheet1!column B
step #2 =arrayformula({ROW(Sheet1!A1:A),Sheet1!A1:A}) will build a virtual matrix whith in column#1 the row and in column#2 the value of Sheet1!column A
finally: join the two formulas as vlookup(___step#1____,____step#2______)
here i have a sheet, in that we can find the sum of diff categories using query function by selecting from drop down list. but here I can select one month only at a time can i find the amount of January and February at the same time by adding another column for another month or in any other way. here I can find the sales of one month at a time. I want to find sales of two or three months at time.
Please help

There's no way you can make a drop down list with multiple choice in Google Sheets.
But there are some alternatives.
List of tick boxes (here as list of months)
Manual input of multiple values separated by comma or something else.
I give both:
Months are selected as list separated by | so it can be used as regex inside 'matches' clause in query
This generates list of months:
=join("|",query({A2:B7;C2:D7},"select Col2 where Col1 = true "))
Window with manual input works similar way
=substitute(substitute(F3,", ",","),",","|")
It takes its contents, removes spaces that are adjacent to comma, adds separator | instead of comma. It's case sensitive and I don't know how to get rid of this (?i) does not work within query.
All together it looks like on the picture and combined formula is:
=query(ORDERS!A1:R14,"select A, B, C , D where
A matches '"&join("|",query({A2:B7;C2:D7},"select Col2 where Col1 = true "))&"' and
B matches '"&substitute(substitute(F3,", ",","),",","|")&"'",0)
Here is my solution:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fQ5_VdxZ-t4MqPbLqzb8q-saqp5Jqz3hVXeWHX_Lls4/copy
I copied your spreadsheet to do my testing. Here's what you can do.
Add another row of the same exact selection found on your "A" row.
Change your formula to this: ={query(ORDERS!A1:R,"Select * where A contains '"&$A2&"' and B contains '"&$B2&"'",1);query(ORDERS!A1:R,"Select * where A contains '"&$A3&"' and B contains '"&$B3&"'",0)}
What this does it run an array of two sets of formulas (In this case 2 queries) for the same set of data.
Here's the screenshot of the output if you're interested.

I'm looking for a way to add together a dynamically generated list of ranges using (I'm guessing) an ARRAYFORMULA.
The normal way of attacking this is fine if there is a known list of ranges, the example of the results I want would work using this:
=ARRAYFORMULA( A1:A10 + B1:B10 )
In the case I'm after I want to add together ranges in multiple sheets. I don't want the users to have to manually adjust the array formula every time they add a new sheet to be calculated, and I also want to be able to add some logic to include or remove the particular sheet from the calculation, but for now I'm happy to ignore that and just focus on adding cells together.
My approach to this was to create a column with a list of names, each one matching a sheet in the document, and then using that list to dynamically build the list of ranges to add together, using INDIRECT.
.------------.
| sheet1 | <---- SheetListNamedRange
|------------|
| sheet2 |
`------------'
Here's a quick example
=ARRAYFORMULA( INDIRECT("'" & SheetListNamedRange & "'!D4:75") )
There are lots of failure modes depending on how it's done, but this particular formula only puts in the values of the first sheet and ignores any others, which I guess makes sense.
What I'm after is kind of the equivalent of i++ in a loop found in a normal coding language. Is there some way of making this work?
If I understand you correctly, you'd like to get a list generated based on different ranges across different sheets. If your case is as simple as the one you mention in the beginning of your post, the following would do the job.
={Sheet1!A1:A2; Sheet2!B1:B2}
If you want the sum of all these values, you can use SUM.
=SUM({Sheet1!A1:A2; Sheet2!B1:B2})
Please let me know if this isn't what you were looking for, so I can change the answer accordingly.
you can't refer to array of arrays in INDIRECT. you will need to INDIRECT each sheet which contains array.
=SUMPRODUCT(ARRAYFORMULA(INDIRECT(A1&"!"&"D:D")+
INDIRECT(A2&"!"&"D:D")+
INDIRECT(A3&"!"&"D:D")+
INDIRECT(A4&"!"&"D:D")))
note1: in this case result is 25 as sum of 10 + 15.
10 is sum of sheet1!D:D
and 15 is sum of sheet2!D:D
note2: there is no sheet3 and sheet4 which is equal to 0 in INDIRECT
note3: D:D of the sheet where you have the list of sheets needs to be empty
