On my toolbar I am trying to properly lay out three buttons. One in the middle that should remain centered horizontally, and then one aligned left and one aligned right. But because the text for the left button is longer than either the middle button or the right one, the spacer items won't seem to produce the desired spacing effect. I've tried both fixed and flexible, but of course using the fixed type will not dynamically respond to different screen widths, and the the flexible width ones (UIBarButtonSystemItemFlexibleSpace) will not keep the middle button centered.
I've defined the layout both in Interface Builder and programmatically and I get the same effect, what you see here. For example an iPhone 6s looks like:
and an iPhone 11 Pro looks like:
As you can see the "Mid" button is not centered. By using UIBarButtonSystemItemFixedSpace instead of UIBarButtonSystemItemFlexibleSpace I could define the width of the spacers exactly, but in order to calculate it properly I would need to know the width of each UIBarButtonItem and also the right delegate method to do this in. Is this even possible, or must I do a custom view (or something else) to make this UIToolbar look like I want?
Try adding leading spaces to the Shorter title OR using the following items:
Longer-Text Button, Flexible Space, Mid Button, Flexible Space, Fixed Space, Shorter Button
The fixed space would be a hard coded value to match the width delta between the two buttons.

I am trying to create an Android-esque Snackbar. All the behaviour is correct but I am left with a layout issue. I have actually broken this out into a test app to simplify things a bit.
The bar is pinned to the bottom of the view and contains an Icon (UIImageView) along with some text (UILabel). This text can be up to 2 lines max.
For example, it should be able to exand out like this:-
However to further complicate things, i need it so that the icon and text are centred within the red bar and then spread out from the centre until such point that it needs to wrap. Note that there is a padding to the start of the icon and end of the text to prevent it touching the sides. An example of centred content would be..
I haven't been able to get the correct layout. I think the issue has been trying to centre the two items whilst simultaneously conforming to a width that doesn't exceed the edge bounds, causing a constraint conflict. I have also tried embedding the icon and label in a horizontal stack view but couldn't seem to find the correct fill option whilst centring everything.
I have even tried using NSAttributed string and adding the image to the text itself but when the text wrapped, the icon was being resized and/or misplaced.
As you can see, i have been doing this in Storyboard but i am more than happy to do this programmatically if it serves this purpose better.

Why is my the elements of my storyboard (buttons) showing up differently in the simulator to the device? I've got auto-layout on, and I've disabled size-classes but surely this shouldn't matter?

It looks fine on the iPhone 5 (it matches the storyboard), although on the iPhone 6 and other devices it's different.

I'm using a view to hold together the buttons and centered it horizontally.
Any ideas? I'm baffled. It seems I'll have to programmatically place it if this is the case...
From the images you've shared thus far, I don't see any constraints other than the height/width. You need to select the buttons of interest and then hold Control and drag to the bottom of the container, click "Vertical Spacing to Bottom Layout Guide" and then on the right panel, set Vertical Space Constant to adjust (incase you find yourself having to temporarily place the button in the container to get the "Vertical Spacing to Bottom Layout Guide" option when Control + Dragging). Looks like you'll need a negative number for the Vertical Spacing constant to achieve the buttons being slightly out the bottom of the container. Then "Update Frames for Selected View" by pressing Control + Option + =
You can also try clicking the little triangle icon and clicking "Add Missing Constraints." This will add missing constraints needed to keep your icons where they are in the Storyboard, but sometimes I've found that using this automatic feature doesn't achieve my exact intent.
I seem to be having trouble aligning elements. I want this UITextField to always be center horizontally, and stay towards the top of the app.

As you can see, there are constraints set - which are blue lines (I think that means they are correct)
However when I view it in the simulator:

I took out all constraints, I made the UILabel the full width of the view, and centered the text inside. I assumed that this would make it center, but alas not.

I just like two buttons above each other with no margins. This seems like an easy task, but I am new to iOS and I wasted too much time now. I tried dozens of contraints but it never went out well. I always ended up with setting the leading Spaces to -24 and having marings above and beneath the buttons. I am using xcode6, iOS8.1 and storyboard. My app is landscape only. Can someone please teach me what to do?
The buttons should look like seen in this picture: Fullscreen, no margins and Button1 should reach unter the statusbar!
I'll outline the steps:
Pin Button 1 to 0 spacing on Left, Right, Top
Pin Button 2 to 0 spacing on Left, Right, Bottom
Select both buttons, then Pin heights equally
(You can access pin either from the Editor tool bar in the top menu, or from the second icon in the constraints area)
The thing with constraints and auto layout is that you only need enough constraints to let the app calculate where elements should be at all times. You might be able to get away with less constraints.
To get remove the borders, you need to change the button Type in IB from System to Custom, then you can drag and alter the margins to remove them. Following that you will need to update constraints on the buttons.
I'm using Interface Builder in Xcode 6 to make an app and am having trouble getting the text fields and button to centre on the screen for different size screens.
I thought it was a matter of selecting horizontal and vertical centering in container but it doesn't seem to be that when I try it in auto layout. Actually I've tinkered around a bit and I still haven't got it.
I just want to be able to see all of my button and text fields for any size iPhone screen and right now simulator is only showing part of these UI elements like this:
I also want to do this in storyboard and not in code as I'm not at the level of doing this in code yet.
Step 1: Make sure your size class covers all the iPhone screen at least in portrait view. So, change the size class to "wCompact hRegular".
Step 2: After setting the size class properly, add the UITextFields and UIButton to your storyboard. To me, it looks something like-

Before, you start adding constraints, you need to remember two things-
a. Your element(UITextField, UIButton, UIView or any component) needs to know its starting position unambiguously, and
b. Your element needs to know its size meaning, its height and width.
In this case, as you want to centre your elements, I am just assuming that it needs to be centred starting from 10 scale from the left edge and should end 10 scales away from the right edge of your iPhone screen. Now, that means, it's width will be different based on the screen size, but its height will be same.
So, I just add the constrains following way for the 1st text box-
Notice, in the size inspector, I set the text box's starting point, x and width in a way that it is 10 pt away from left edge and 10 pt away from the right edge. Don't worry, it's just simple math.
For the 2nd textField, I add the constrain, the same way-
Lastly, for the button, the constrains are following-
Now, you are good to go. Everything is centered.
By using your size class selector in the bottom of the storyboard window, set you sizes as any width and any height and then follow the below auto layout constrains. It will work for you.
First select the view you want to set the auto layout, and then select the pin option from the right bottom corner of your storyboard and then add the constrains as shown in above picture and click button Add 4 constrains
Repeat the process for all views and set the constrains as Fix the top, bottom, left and right constrains of all views except the last button that should be fix from top,left,right and fixed height.
You need to make use of the size class selector in the bottom of the storyboard window.
So for an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus in portrait you would choose a compact width and regular height like this:
And then you would do whatever auto layout stuff for the given device there
