How to handle access token in OAuth authorization flow? - oauth

I'm building an app that uses Github OAuth, which uses the authorization flow. This is my first time implementing OAuth, so I just wanna make sure i'm doing everything right. Im imagining something like:
User clicks Continue with Github. We call the GH url and provide a frontend app redirect uri. The app accepts a code and sends it to the server. It exchanges it for an access token, then gets the user from an API, gets the id and checks if that exists in the database. If it does, it creates a JWT token and sends a response like [token, ...].
I hope that's how it should be.
The question is what to do if the user doesn't exist. In that case I also want to ask the user for a username in my app (as well as accepting ToS etc). So I have two options: sending back the code or sending the access token.
If I send the code, once the user fills the username, the server will be querying for the access token again. Seems repetitive to me.
But since the access token is a function of my app secret, I'm hesitant for it to be on the client. Although these convince me otherwise:
access token should be a signature of the app secret, and shouldn't leak the app secret (right?)
we can assume app store is secure, because, well, it's the app's state
connection is SSL
So what's the best practice? Cheers!

Not sure about GitHub specifics - but the general Self Sign Up behaviour is for GitHub to manage this for you. After login your app will receive a token with a new user id. How to only allow my own app to access my API

I am building an API for my rails app. Through that API I will log users in and allow them to interact with their data.
On top of that users authentication, I will also like to make sure only my iOS app has access to the API, and eventually my own web app.
I want to make sure no one else will be using the API, so on top of the user authentication, I will like to protect my API with a token for each of my apps.
How do you usually solve this problem? Would I have to pass that token over on each call in order to authenticate that the call is coming from a valid client and identify which client it is (web vs iOS).
I will very much appreciate any pointers or if you know of an article explaining how to deal with this.
As you are already using jwt's to authenticate your user, why not just use the functionality of jwt to include additional information in the token, in this instance some form of hashed string that you can verify server side if it is a valid "client id".
On each request you could refresh the string.
Kind of dual authentication in each request. the user and the client.

Access LinkedIn REST API without front-end (e.g. OAuth2 redirect)

Goal
Fetch a company's updates save them locally in a background task
Problem
This should be done as a backend service without any real user interaction. We could provide a user account to use, but the authentication is a problem: There is literally no one to answer the OAuth redirect and there is no public redirect URL to configure, since it's a background service.
Is there any way to access the API without having a redirect URL or a real user?
You can get an initial access token in a regular front end flow, for you as the app developer i.e yourself as the LinkedIn user. Once you've got that, you can store it in the backend and use it for 60 days to get access to the LinkedIn APIs.
After 60 days you need to refresh the token as documented in:

Unfortunately LinkedIn does not (yet) support an autonomous refresh flow where your app can get a new access token by presenting a refresh token on a backchannel. So the developer will have to refresh the access token by a manual login every 2 months.
Well, it is still all HTTP and HTML, so in fact there is no real reason to show the OAuth dialog to a user, as long you can strip out the necessary parts in the HTML authentication dialog and send a valid response back to the server, using the username and password from the user (which you can obtain from him, or save it yourself in a config file if it is you).
Note that there might be a legal issue if LinkedIn demands you to actually show the dialog, beside that, there is no technical need.

OAuth for server side apps

I need to interact with an API that only supports OAuth2.
The problem is, I would like to write a purely server side application which should sit there without a GUI polling an API every day.
The API gives me the ability to get the application token programatically, but it looks like I need to implement the entire GUI flow to get the subsequent access token. This is because I need to log in via the application providers web based login screen.
It looks like I then need to get that access token, and copy this out as my server side credential where I recreate it. If that ever expires or goes bad, I'll need to go back via the GUI flow to get my server side access token.
Is my understanding correct here as this feels very clunky?
Specifically:
Can I avoid implementing the process where we link over to the application providers login form?
Is it right that after doing this, I have to unpick an access token and store this within my server side application. I don't appear to have any control over whether that will expire?
I can see that e.g. Facebook specifically support server side and client side flow. I wonder if I'm coming up against limitations in this particular implementation of OAuth 2?
I don't know how you actually want the app to behave, but one thing is certain - you do have to input the user credentials once.
Once you authenticate and authorize (there are a lot of open questions on SO, about automatic authentication), your app will get not only an access token, but also a Refresh Token. A refresh token is just what you need in your use case. You can store it your the server side - A refresh token does not have an expiration time. It lives till the user explicitly revokes permissions.
For any OAuth service provider there is a token exchange endpoint where you can exchange the refresh token for a (refresh token + access token) pair. So, at the backend (your server) you can at any time hit this endpoint - get a short-lived access token and perform the operation that you need to. This saves you all the effort of following the GUI flow every time.

EDIT - Made some changes after reading your comment. You simply need to know how to use refresh tokens in your app.
I've found that the typical solution to the problem I asked in this question is to use XAuth.
Many providers such as Twitter and the application I am currently working against support XAuth to provide a simplified flow without the user interface based authentication.

Design for Facebook authentication in an iOS app that also accesses a secured web service

Goal:
Allow a user to authentication with Facebook into an iOS application which requires access to a protected web service that I'm running.
Assumptions:
There is a native authentication (and registration) system in place for those users that opt not to use Facebook for sign in.
Details:
Assume we want to offer the option for a user to sign in with Facebook without creating a separate account/credential for our system.
Because we support our own native auth mechanism (username and password) we have our own user IDs and issue an authentication token that is used for subsequent interactions after the initial credential validation.
I'm surprised that Facebook doesn't have best practices for this in their developer documentation. All the existing documentation is either assuming you are building FB auth into a website, or a standalone mobile app with no service that requires authentication.
Here's my initial thoughts on how this would be designed but want validation on whether it's correct.
Client pops the Facebook iOS Login
UI User signs in with Facebook credentials and gets access token
iOS App passes access token to our server
Our server talks to FB graph API using access token to (a) validate the token and (b) get the FB user ID for that access token.
e.g. Our server would call https://graph.facebook.com/me/?access_token=XYZ which would return profile info in a JSON object
Assuming it's valid, our server extracts the User ID from the JSON object and checks whether the user already has an account. If so, we issue our own auth ticket to client to use for that session. If user doesn't have an account, we create a new one with the Facebook User ID, assign our own unique UserID and issue our auth ticket.
Client then passes auth ticket back on subsequent interactions that need authentication.
This seems like the right approach to me but not sure if I'm missing something insanely basic and going down the wrong (complicated) path.
I just dealt with this myself, and here's the part that bit me:
In your step 5... It's possible for a user to register for an account with you entirely separate from their Facebook ID, right? Then some other time they log in with Facebook.... And you just created them a second account and lost their first one.
There needs to be a way to be logged in to your web service, then log in to facebook, and capture the association between the facebook ID and the local account.
Apart from that, your plan sounds solid.

Sharing of Access Tokens
Our Data Policies explicitly prohibit any sharing of an Access Token
for your app with any other app. However, we do allow developers to
share Tokens between a native implementation and a server
implementation of the same App (ie. using the same App ID) as long as
the transfer takes place using HTTPS.
One problem I can see with this strategy, is that somebody can give you an access token obtained for a different facebook app. As far as I know, there's no way to verify that the access token is for your application, so you'll just go on and use it.
It doesn't sound very harmful, though. Generally people/apps try to protect the access tokens, rather than sharing them.
One possible exploit of this would be, for somebody to create their own site or mobile app, obtain access tokens for their users and try to authenticate them, using your API. If this succeeds (the user is has a facebook account in your site), the malicious site will be able to use your API impersonating the user.
It's a bit of a long shot, but I think it could work.

your solution totally works.
Maybe an alternative: why not just get the email on the client from the initial social service request and send to your web service? The web service could just store the email, and maybe a social_provider as well. I understand that your web service will not be able to validate where the email came from, but isn't there a high-trust relationship between your web service and your client? If there is, seems like you can depend on the email coming from the right place. Someone please let me know what obvious thing I'm missing that makes the email-based approach silly...

Twitter: is it possible for user to manually request and then provide app with access_token

I've been using Twitter Basic Authentication where you simply need to enter login/password and that's enough to post tweets. But now since twitter has turned it off, I have to look into oauth. I do have experience with oauth but I always used the common way to do this - get request token, ask user to "approve app", exchanged request token to access token, then use access token. Unfortunately that's too complicated for my particular task and I really would love to keep oauth as simple as Basic Authentication was.
The reason for this is that I need to have oauth_token for one user only - admin. So I am looking for something like this: admin goes to twitter and registers app (I guess that can't be avoided), then accesses some twitter page and obtains access_token for this app, then takes key, secret and token and enters them as configs in the admin area. After this the site has the ability to post tweets to admin's profile.
I've been trying to find how to do this with no luck so far so before giving up I decided to confirm that this is not possible (or hopefully possible and I just missed something).
You have 2 options to simplify using a single user application:
If the user that you are going to be logged in as owns the OAuth application, you can login to dev.twitter.com as that user, drill down to the application, then click the 'My Access Token" button on the right. You can then just copy and paste the access token values into your application
Similar to #1, but slightly more laborious: develop a simple application whose sole purpose is to give you the access token for the user you wish to login as (or use a sample application somebody else has made). Then, again, copy and paste the values into your application.
