Customize states - tfs

We are trying customize Kanban board with new columns and new states. Couldn't find an option to customize states other than modifying XML template. Is there any other way to add customized states?

In TFS 2017? No.
In Azure DevOps Server (formerly known as TFS) 2019? Yes -- the XML work item process model is still supported, but a new inheritance model is also introduced.

Add a field to a work item in tfs 2017

I have a request to add a new field to a work item and we are using TFS 2017. My organization has done this before in previous versions of TFS. However, I remember customizing any process template to add new fields causes headaches when upgrading to the next version of TFS.
My question is if this is still a concern? If so, is there a work-around for this issue?
Thanks!
Tim
Basically, you would have the same procedure if you want to upgrade a on-premises TFS with customizations.
So, before you customize, you should understand which customizations support an easy update path and which do not.
Recommended practices:
Identify the best options for customizing WITs that support your
tracking requirements. When you change objects that track work items,
you should identify how these changes will affect existing and future
team projects.
Put processes and all XML definition files under version control. Do
not deploy objects that you define but have not stored in a
repository.
Test your customized objects just as you would test your software.
Minimize the number of custom fields that you introduce. Minimize the
number of fields that you make reportable.

Estimating LOE for TFS Customization - add a WIT to a project

For a full-time TFS admin professional, about how many hours would go into "customizing" an existing scrum template project to add an additional work item type?
The easiest way to add a new WIT is to copy an existing WIT and then modify the definition file. You have two options to achieve it:
You can install TFS Power Tools, this tool provides an add-in to the Team menu and a new section on the Work Items page in Team Explorer. Use this tool to create new work items with default values, or to easily apply values to existing work items.
You can export the a WIT definition files, and edit it, then import it. Useful links:
https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/docs/work/customize/add-modify-wit#add-wit
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404855.aspx
Regarding how many hours it will cost, it depends on your detailed requirement and whether you are familiar with TFS Power Tools and WIT definition files. If you just want to create a new WIT based an existing WIT, and just add some field, it will only need several minutes with TFS Power Tool.

TFS 2012 Automatic workitem State Change

I defined new work item with tfs power tools on tfs 2012 server.
new work item name is cab. states: new, active, deployed, closed.
I linked (releated) two User Story to cab work item.
I want to automatic state change(closed) which linked user story when cab work item state changed(deployed)
how to? c# coding? tfs event service? workflow action? or any way?
I don't found article for this requrement
You cannot do this with pure WorkItem workflow.
I would use a Server plugin to trigger event. See this design.
Only downside is that you have to remeber adding and configuring this plugin on every AT node and after upgrade/migration of TFS.

Change TFS Process Template

I've been looking into change the process template on a Team Project, but still have a few questions. I'm looking to move from MS Agile v5 to TeamPulse v1. There are no existing work items that we care about, so no need to move those over, however we do want to keep the existing source control history/branches.
With this in mind what is the best method to use? I am currently looking at using witadmin but am also considering TFS Integration Tools (MS or CodePlex versions). I think these are essentially my only options.
Do I need to worry about mapping existing fields to those in the new template if I don't intend to keep the current items?
Any additional advice would also be welcome.
It is not possible to explicitly change the Process Template, though it is possible to import the new work item type definitions using witadmin
I found the following answers helpful in finding a solution:

https://stackoverflow.com/a/5664531/509356
If you don't need any existing workitems I recommend to create a new team project with TeamPulse v1 and migrate only the source with the TFS Integration Tool. The problem with the witadmin solution is that you won't be able to delete the old workitem definitions and that could lead to confusions.

Is it possible to add PBIs/tasks to TFS without visual studio?

we're transitioning to doing all our task tracking in TFS 2010 and I'm wondering if there is a more lightweight way of working with it than through Visual Studio?
Just some sort of web-interface or a lightweight client, or even some powershell commandlets where I can create new tasks and add information to existing ones.
You could use a tool called Eylean Board. It integrates with TFS allowing to create and manage TFS tasks in a more user-friendly interface. Besides that Eylean offers additional features such as reports, time tracking and others.
There was a web interface for TFS2008. As far as I can tell it is included by default with the 2010 edition
I use Scrum Taskboard für Team Systems for the Daily Scrum, its easy and fast to change status of SPIs and create new SPIs. There is also a planning mode to add new BPIs.
A other comprehensive tool is Telerik Work Item Manager. It provides dash board, interactive task board and many ways to sort, filter and grouping items.
