I am willing to trigger my Jenkins job based on status change event from a JIRA issue. I am able to do it using jenkins-trigger-plugin. However I wish to get some more information about the issue like the description of the issue etc. I could see an environment variable named 'JIRA_ISSUE_KEY' but it gives me the key and nothing else.
As of the current release, the issue attribute path is currently resolved from this Issue object. All of jira-trigger-plugin configuration is documented in Jenkins help buttons, which is viewable in Jenkins job configuration.
description for example is retrievable via description path (which would call issue.getDescription() essentially).

I am switching from the github pull request builder plugin (for security reasons) and am trying to get the same functionality from Pipelines (using different plugin). I think I have just about everything, however I can't seem to find a way to re-trigger a build simply by a trigger phrase like in github pull request builder plugin. Is that possible via pipelines?
By trigger phrase, I mean that a user can make a comment on the PR saying "Jenkins re-test" and it will kick off the build again.
You can put a condition at the top of the build script to check for the message. You can access the changesets using currentBuild.ChangeSets. The last changeset is at the end of the array. Then you need to access the last element of that changeset. Finally you can access the message via message property. You can then search for your keyword.
I am doing the opposite (not triggering the build with a phrase) but never tried for pullrequests though.
Another idea is to use the "ignore builds with specific message" property and setting this message to be a regex with look ahead that accepts everything except the keyword. I don't really recall the syntax though :/
i'm using jenkins to build android project,
however i always got below error: "* What went wrong:Could not set the value of environment variable 'BUILD_USER': could not convert string to current locale"
i don't know where is environment variable 'BUILD_USER',i am confused why could not set it. can anyone please help?
BUILD_USER comes from the Build User Vars plugin. It should be the First and Last name of the user who triggered the build (as defined in the Security Realm, i.e. LDAP, internal DB, etc.).
I am guessing that there is some character in the name of the user that doesn't agree with the locale configured in your Jenkins environment. You could disabled that plugin (remove the checkbox next to it in the "Manage Plugins" page), and see if the error goes away. Then you can troubleshoot from there.
I have a job creator job that creates other jobs in jenkins and I would like to use the created jobs name in the description.
For example for name "JobXX" i would like to have:
"This is documentation for JobXX etc.."
In "Execute shell" build step I can refer to the jobs name via $JOB_NAME parameter but that does not seem to work in the description field.
Any ideas on how to do this? Or if it's even possible?

Among the different variables you can use there is {PROJECT_NAME} which fits your needs.
Besides this, this plugin allows you also to automatically set descriptions to each specific build.
Is there a way to get the hudson job initiated user name.
Is it possible to get using script shell, py etc.
Lets assume I have the build # which was initiated. I know how to get the latest build info using api but would like to get a user details for a specific job.
Do you think, this will work for hudson? :)

That plugin will not work with Hudson, unless you download a very old version of the plugin. I'm not sure how many people are still using Hudson and haven't upgraded to Jenkins.
Anyway, when a user manually triggers a build, this is called a "user cause"; there are other types of cause, e.g. SCM trigger.
You can use the JSON or XML API to get the causes for a build, for example:
https://ci.jenkins-ci.org/job/remoting/lastSuccessfulBuild/api/xml?xpath=//action/cause/userId
In this case, this returns the username that caused the build to run.
Though note that there may be multiple causes for a build, and potentially other cause types that use the userId field.
This works in Jenkins, but it should also work in Hudson, but I haven't tested it.
I'm building a group of projects from the SVN. There is a possibility of changing the SVN location time to time. As there are bunch of projects I hope to give the repository url with a environment variable so i can change all the url's easily. Any idea how to do that??
In Subversion Source Code Management, you can use variable in the Repository URL, simply type:
http://my.svn.com/path/to/${VARIABLE}
${VARIABLE} is a job parameters that is defined earlier. Never heard of anyone wanting to use actual environment variables for this, but you can try with the same syntax.
By default, it will give you a red warning that this is not a valid URL. You can disable this warning by going to Manage Jenkins -> Configure System and look for Validate repository URLs up to the first variable name. Put a checkmark there and save.
