Installed the app on iPhone 6 iOS9 and here is what happened. Notice black bars on top and bottom. It works just fine on iOS8. How I can fix it?
I've tried building with Xcode 6.4 & 7. Same result.
(iPhone 5 used to run iPhone 4 apps like this)
Did you migrate your app from an earlier version of Xcode? If so then Xcode is now making an assumption about your screen size and you need a way of indicating the actual screen size at run time.
There are two ways:
a) If you use a launch screen.
You are missing a LaunchScreen.storyboard file.
Create a Launch Screen object from the New File... dialog
b) If you don't use a launch screen.
Go to your Target's settings and choose General, then App Icons and Launch Images.
Now set "Launch Screen File" to your "main.storyboard" (or another storyboard if appropriate)
My App does not use a launch image.
Setting the "Launch Screen File" to my "main.storyboard" file fixed the issue for me.
This setting can be found under "Target->General->App Icons and Launch Images"

For me the problem is i'm migrating my app from earlier version of Xcode and the project is missing LaunchScreen.storyboard file. I have just created LaunchScreen.storyboard and added it to launch Screen File. This did the trick.
I'm using xcode 7.2 . At first, I created a LaunchScreen.storyboard file, as Potassium Permanganate
suggested, and it worked! However, I didn't want a launch screen, so I tried setting Main.storyboard as Launch Screen File and it did the trick!
This one is if you do not use storyboard at all.
It occurs when you remove LaunchScreen from Launch Screen File in App icons and Launch Images.
Instead of removing it from here go to info.plist and find Launch screen interface file base name and remove LaunchScreen, i.e. leave it blank.
It wont show in info.plist if you have removed LaunchScreen already from Launch Screen File. Then you can give any name in Launch Screen File and it will appear and you can remove the name.
When you migrate your app from earlier version of xCode to xCode 6 or xCode 7, you will face this issue.
For iOS 7 and earlier, developers need to provide separate launch
images for all screen sizes, resolutions and orientations their app supported.
In Xcode 6 or later, there is another option. You can specify a storyboard whose initial view controller will then be used as the app’s launch screen. Use below steps:
Create a blank storyboard file named LaunchScreen.storyboard.
Go to your target settings and, on the "General" tab, select the storyboard as your Launch Screen File in "App Icons and Launch Images" section. Xcode will add a corresponding UILaunchStoryboardName key to your app’s Info.plist. When this key is present, Xcode will prioritize it over any launch images you might have set.
Add some subviews to newly created storyboard's view and position them with constraints. When you launch the app on a device, the OS should use the scene as the launch screen.
Delete the older app from simulator and clean the project.
Cheers :-)
I have same issue in my app . In my app i have multiple targets added to project . If i use launch storyboard solution then i can see full screen but in my case my Lunch image looks blurred and stretched on iPhone 4 . To come out from this issue I have used LaunchImage asset solutions . After this still I am facing same issue .I have tried all above solutions, At end I found my png images don't include ALPHA resolutions . After adding new images ,i can see full screen images .
iOS changed the way the system detects the resolution of the iPhone. You used to have to supply a number of png images named things like "Default-568#2x.png", "Default-667h#3x.png". Now you don't have to do that anymore. You need to delete those "Default-568#2x.png" style files and move on to using a proper LAUNCH SCREEN object in your project.
To add a launch screen just go to the New File... dialog (File / New / File, or press Cmd + N)
Double click that new Launch Screen file to edit it. Be sure it is ticked "use as launch screen" in its properties.
Finally be sure to select your LaunchScreen.storyboard file under project properties / Targets / "App Icons and Launch Images"
Go to the asset catalog and create a new iOS launch Image. then in Target>General>App Icons and Launch Images>Launch Image Source you will see automatically the new Launch Image created in the assets catalog.
In my case, I have several targets in the project and each one has it's own launch screen images. The weird thing one of the targets looks fine but others have those black bars. The thing was in the name of Launch folder inside assets. Change name to LaunchImage solves the problem.
Swift 4.2
select LaunchScreen.storyboard if its empty
In my case I have one asset with launch images however it was displaying the top and bottom dark bar as well.
I've tried the launch storyboard solution and yes it works but I didn't want to add a new file so, this is what I did to fix the issue:
Copied my launch images to another folder
Removed the existing LaunchImage asset
Added a new LaunchImage asset
Added the images to the new LaunchImage
That's it!
Go to target settings in xcode in that section go to App icons and launch images section in that section select launch screen file you will find a drop down of values select CDVLaunchScreeen value against launch screen file value
I had a similar issue on an iPod. To fix this, I replaced
<key>UILaunchStoryboardName~ipad</key>
<string>LaunchScreenIpad</string>
<key>UILaunchStoryboardName~iphone</key>
<string>LaunchScreenIphone</string>
with
<key>UILaunchStoryboardName~ipad</key>

<key>UILaunchStoryboardName~iphone</key>
<string>LaunchScreenIphone</string>
<key>UILaunchStoryboardName~ipod</key>
<string>LaunchScreenIphone</string>
in Info.plist.
I had an old app (iOS 7.4 - 8.2) and after upgrading it got the same issue (getting black empty bar at the top), I managed to solve it by:
Main.storyboard
Choose your Scene & Controller
on left menu, go to Attribute Inspector
find "Presentation" and instead of "Automatic" set it to "Full Screen"
It did the trick for me.
My app is written in python kivy. This is what I did. It worked.
The reason is that I don't have AppIcon and LaunchImage defined.
There is free website that can provides you a set of icons and
launchImages for various devices.
Once you have the full set, usually 2 folders - AppIcon and
LaunchImage folder. Open your Xcode project, General > AppIcon and
Launch images.
In the AppIcon Source, click the arrow on the right. It will go to
another page, in which you can drag and drop the two folders in
(yes, drag the folders).
Go back to the previous General tab, in the AppIcon Source, you can
select your folder, usually called AppIcon-1. And tick 'include all
icon asset'
Leave 'Launch Screen File' blank. This is very different from
previous Xcode version.
Under the deployment info, status bar style, you can tick require
full screen.
After those steps you should be good to load again.
Please note these steps are for a non storyboard app. In my case, my app is written in kivy.
Don't Do anything that are described in earlier answers...
To show view Controller follow the following single step
Step 1 : Add the splash Screen for iPhone and iPad.
After this this error will not come again.

I'm trying to get the Launch screen to display instead I get the default black screen.
I remember I've had this issue in the past and is something really silly but I can't remember what it is.
I have a LaunchScreen.xib. I've set in my target -> info to use LaunchScreen and not image catalog. I am running iOS 8 and using Xcode 6.1. I tried on all iPhone simulators and iPhone 4s.
I can't think what more info to give than that.
For those who are still looking for another answer here's what worked for us:
Our launch xib only contains an imageView in the middle of the view. For some reason the image never showed (but the view was there, checked it with changing the background color).
The solution was to move the image file out of the image catalog and just drop it in the project as a standalone file. Pretty strange considering when we tried other images from the catalog they appeared correctly but not this one. Anyway, I hope this helps someone!
I had the same issue.
Turned out that I had earlier tried to attach a viewcontroller file with the launchscreen. To fix:
Go to launch screen
Click Connections Inspector in right pane
Remove all connections.
Accoring to #doctorBroctor: also go to the File's Owner tab and remove the connections there.
Go to your launch screen
Go to file inspector
Check the checkbox for "Use as Launch Screen"
I have tried with:
Deleted Launch Screen File.
Tapped on Use Asset Catalog in Launch Image Source and added Splash screen Images as desired in the image asset.
Deleted Previous Project on Simulator or Device. Clear the Project.
Run Again and it is showing now.
One reason for why you might experience the black screen instead of your launch screen is that the .xib file might not get copied in your build phase. At least that was my issue that caused my app to show the black screen even though I had done the steps you describe.
So, double check that your LaunchScreen.xib (or whatever it is named) appears in:
Your target -> Build Phases -> Copy Bundle Resources
And if not, make sure to add it. That resolved my issue.
For me the problem was that I hadn't selected the LaunchScreen.storyboard in the General tab of the project settings.
I've experienced the same issue. The solution for me was simply delete the app, reboot the device, then reinstall it. I think iOS caches the Launchscreen, and this cache is not invalidated every time when it should be.
I had the same issue in iOS 9 as well. Deleting the old app in simulator alone is not enough. Simulator has to be quit launched. It worked for me.
I fix it by select the "is Initial View Controller" in storyboard.
Make sure to delete the installed app from the emulator. Then run the app again from xcode (product->clean, product->run).
That worked for me.
I've looked at all the above answers, it helped a bit. Especially the answer by Suragch put me in right direction.
The LaunchScreen.storyboard isn't showing up, even after applying simple background colour to the view and removing the image.
Firstly, I cannot see the "LaunchScreen.storyboard" as shown in the image
This was because, some reason the LaunchScreen.storyboard wasn't added to the build Target.
Solution: Ensure the LaunchScreen.storyboard is included to the build Target.
Also, Choose the LaunchScreen.storyboard from the drop down as shown in above pic.
I hope it helps someone!
I found this old post 'cause my launch screen WAS working, then it stopped. I thrashed around for a good while and then realized this, undocumented problem:
If your launch XIB or storyboard file has a UIImageView with an image whose name contains a space, the entire screen won't load.
I only had a centered UIImageView in my LaunchScreen.xib that contained an image (.png file), and had the same black screen showing.
I removed the image (the .png file) from the project, added it again with new name, and used the new image.
Make sure to use empty Launch Screen File, then Xcode would use Launch Image Source.
Make sure you have "is initial View Controller" checked in interface builder.
I tried pretty much everything else but this finally fixed the problem and now it works in simulator as well as the device.
New feature in the iOS 8 SDK: you can now use a storyboard scene in place of your app’s launch images.
Create a blank storyboard file named LaunchScreen.storyboard.
Go to your target settings and, on the General tab, select the storyboard as your Launch Screen File. Xcode will add a corresponding UILaunchStoryboardName key to your app’s Info.plist. When this key is present, Xcode will prioritize it over any launch images you might have set.
Add a view controller scene to the storyboard. Add some subviews to the scene and position them with constraints. When you launch the app on a device, the OS should use the scene as the launch screen.

Reset Simulator working for me
For iOS 14 and newer:
Device > Erase All Contents and Settings...
For iOS 11 and newer:
Hardware > Erase All Contents and Settings...
For previous versions:
Simulator > Reset Content and Settings...
Your launch image should be a PNG. A JPEG may work under certain targets, but you should use PNG anyway.
I set up the launch images as so, XCode forced me to rename the images which is ok, but for some reason when I run iOS Simulator, there is no launch image displayed. Instead, a black screen is displayed. Previously I had the warning Missing default-568h#2x launch image which went away when I clicked add on the menu that was popping up when I expanded the warning. However the launch images still do not display when launching the app. I have tried resetting all content, cleaning, building, and then running again, but nothing seems to be working. Additionally, XCode did not rename any of my images to default568h#2x so I'm assuming that is a problem, even after I clicked add. I do have launch image set to default in info.plist.
Any suggestions?
I meet the same problem, but the result comes out because i changed the Launch Image Source Setting.
Here is how I fix it:
Go to the target in the Project Editor
Select the General tab
Find the "APP Icons and Launch Images" section and click "Launch Images Source"
If the current state is "Use Asset Catalog", select "Migrate".
Problem Solved.
Xcode 11 outputs this error if you move your Info.plist file and forget to tell Xcode about the new location in Build Settings.
The Info.plist contains metadata about your LaunchScreen storyboard/image. Apparently, Xcode assumes you want to use a launch image (and did not provide one) when it cannot find the target's Info.plist file. Updating the Info.plist location in Build Settings fixes this disconnect:
Select the Project file (top item) in the sidebar.
Select the Target in the Project editor.
Select the Build Settings tab in the Project editor.
Scroll/search for "plist", or "INFOPLIST_FILE" to be exact.
Double-click the plist entry to edit it, and type in the correct location for the Info.plist file.
(e.g. if you moved it to a Resources folder within the MyGreatApp project root folder, set the value to "MyGreatApp/Resources/Info.plist")
This is not the OP's situation (they intended to use launch images), but I thought I would add this breadcrumb for anyone like me who got this error after moving an Info.plist file.
I am guessing but just try following steps :
Go to the launch image path in your resources .
Copy paste your image and give the same name default-568h#2x
Try to clean and build the project .
Then also if you are not seeing the image then just simply delete the application and install it again .
No need to name a file like that.
Just doing this solves the problem :
1. Add launch images inside assets by right click / add new files.
By doing this, you will add launge images set.
2. Then set all of these launge images.
To see the sizes do these : Select the image then you can check the size on the property inspector at right. Like this:
If (as opposed to all the previous answers) you're not interested in any launch image at all (i.e. the error appeared after deleting it), the following suffices:
1. Product > Clean
2. Product > Build
I am using Xcode 11.3.1, and I just did a project clean up, this warning is gone:
⇧ + ⌘ + K to Clean Build Folder.
Close Xcode.
Re-open Xcode.
Re-build project.
None of the suggestions worked, but this did
Delete the targets that cause the error
Recreate the target
Problem solved 🎉
Clean project
Build project
Toggle issue navigator window
In the issue navigator window there will be a warning message saying Missing Default-568h#2x.png
Click that issue
The dialog will come up prompting to add the missing file
Hitting add will place the file (all black in colour) into the root of the project
Issue solved
