I have a simple HTML file upload snippet that works under iOS as well. However my problem is that the filename of the uploaded file will always be 'image.jpeg'. Is there a way to get the original filename - i.e. 'IMG_0001.jpg' instead? The major issue is that if I have 2 files selected they both have the name of 'image.jpeg' as opposed to their unique names.
Safari on iOS will always make the name of the uploaded file image.jpeg, presumably for security/privacy purposes. You need to generate your own name for the files, which is a good idea in general for uploaded files: you never want to trust the client too much.
If you are targeting more than just Safari on iOS, you will still need to handle this case because it is reasonable that people might upload multiple files with the same name, but originally located in different directories.

I have an app that lets the user pick local files and send them to the backend to add to their vault. To pick the file, I use FilePicker.platform.pickFiles. It seems to work fine, the file is picked and when it's an image we show a preview to the user (and it always works).
Once the user has picked all their files, we create a list of Future to try and send the files to the backend, then we await the list to resolve. If we deem a picture is too big, we reduce the size using FlutterImageCompress.compressAndGetFile.
This usually works, but on iPhone, there is a seemingly random behavior where the file isn't found and an error is thrown : Cannot retrieve length of file, path = '/private/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/3600F812-FD42-4441-A654-766991E45E04/tmp/com.feykro.myApp.int-Inbox/myFile.pdf' (OS Error: No such file or directory, errno = 2)
The file in the example works just fine in other instances, the problem seems random and not directly tied to the file I chose. The problem is not exclusive to pdf files either, as it also occurs on images even though they're picked correctly and displayed in the app.
Any idea what could be causing this ?

I am using transloadit to generate a thumbnail image sent from an iOS app that saves both the original image and the thumbnail to Amazon S3. The files get get saved out correctly with one exception. The file name for the thumbnail does not retain the capitalization of the original filename for the file extension, i.e. JPG vs jpg. Here is my template:

Is there any way to retain the capitalization? I realize I can just force all of my filenames from the app to lowercase, however, I thought maybe I am just doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

First of all, let me assure you there's nothing wrong with what you're doing. Secondly, I've asked our engineers about the issue and we realized it's a limitation caused by our special usage of some of the conversion tools.
We'll do our best to address this on future versions, but we cannot commit on a date. So for now if it's causing you trouble, we recommend using lowercase letters.
I have a website, let's say it's "http://www.jwilkthings.com/stuff"
I have a bunch of .txt files stored on this website, i.e. "http://www.jwilkthings.com/stuff/text1.txt"
What I'm wanting to do is find a way in iOS to download all of those text files without knowing what the document name is. I can already retrieve them manually as long as I have a file name, but I would rather just get all of them at once and put them in the documents directory if possible. I currently use FileZilla to upload all of the text files, so I can use FTP if needed.
The correct way to solve this problem is to not use FTP (riddled with performance and security issues), and to configure your web server to expose a table of contents directory listing that your client can parse.
But that's not an answer to your question.
If you really want your iOS app to speak FTP, take a look at the SimpleFTP sample project from Apple.
It's old, but I just got it to build on iOS 5. The ListController.m file has the code you're looking for.
I understand the basic of Document Interaction Programming and UIDocumentInteractionController and I've got it working in my app. However I'm having trouble with specific details of using custom file types. I can't find this addressed in the Apple docs anywhere.
My app uses it's own file types with unique extensions. The files themselves are just plists (xml), but I want the device to treat the files as only openable in my app. Originally I implemented the Document Interaction stuff to treat them as XML while I got it working, but now I want it to treat them as binary files that it needs to hand off to my app.
At the moment, if you have one of my files in an email attachment, iOS first shows the QuickLook (which just spews all the text content of the xml out) before you can choose to Open In. Similarly if one of my files is opened with Safari, Safari just shows the XML and doesn't give you the option to show it in my app at all.
So how do I get iOS to not treat my files as XML? I've changed the "Conforms to UTI" value and "public.mime-type" value in the info.plist, but it seems to have no effect.
Any tips greatly appreciated.
As far as i understand the UIT concept of Apple you cannot just change the file extension to change a potential UIT of the file. If the file contains XML-Data, other apps as well as internal apps might recognize your content and show it internally as XML.
Try to store your Plists with NSPropertyListSerialization NSPropertyListBinaryFormat_v1_0 (then you readble XML)
When you did that without success, why not trying this:
use zlib to compress the XML plists afterwards to a zipped file.
make a "unique" file extensions (<file>.myappname)
this should "hide" other apps and quick view.

I have a website that shows galleries. Users can upload their own content from the web (by entering a URL) or by uploading a picture from their computer.
I am storing the URL in the database which works fine for the first use case but I need to figure out where to store the actual images if a user does a upload from their computer.
Is there any recommendation here or best practice on where I should store these?
Should I save them in the appdata or content folders? Should they not be stored with the website at all because it's user content?
You should NOT store the user uploads anywhere they can be directly accessed by a known URL within your site structure. This is a security risk as users could upload .htm file and .js files. Even a file with the correct extension can contain malicious code that can be executed in the context of your site by an authenticated user allowing server-side or client-side attacks.

Don't put the files within your normal web site directory structure
Don't use the original file name the user gave you. You can add a content disposition header with the original file name so they can download it again as the same file name but the path and file name on the server shouldn't be something the user can influence.
Don't trust image files - resize them and offer only the resized version for subsequent download
Don't trust mime types or file extensions, open the file and manipulate it to make sure it's what it claims to be.
Limit the upload size and time.
Depending on the resources you have to implement something like this, it is extremely beneficial to store all this stuff in Amazon S3.
Once you get the upload you simply push it over to Amazon and pop the URL in your database as you're doing with the other images. As mentioned above it would probably be wise to open up the image and resize it before sending it over. This both checks it is actually an image and makes sure you don't accidentally present a full camera resolution image to an end user.
Doing this now will make it much, much easier if you ever have to migrate/failover your site and don't want to sync gigabytes of image assets.
One way is to store the image in a database table with a varbinary field.
Another way would be to store the image in the App_Data folder, and create a subfolder for each user (~/App_Data/[userid]/myImage.png).
For both approaches you'd need to create a separate action method that makes it possible to access the images.
While uploading images you need to verify the content of the file before uploading it. The file extension method is not trustable.
Use magic number method to verify the file content which will be an easy way.

You can save your trusted data just in parallel of htdocs/www folder so that any user can not access that folder. Also you can add .htaccess authentication on your trusted data (for .htaccess you should kept your .htpasswd file in parallel of htdocs/www folder) if you are using apache.
