How do I create dynamic views in swift? - ios

I am making an IOS app where the main layout is a UITableView, and cells are completely dynamic and loaded from server. Each tableview item is a different layout.
For example, lets take first item of the tableview:
Server tells it should have a label, 2 buttons and a textbox, it should be created by code. I figured out how to create those elements themselves, the problem is how do I position them?
Ideally I would like to add each layout item under the previous one. And tableviewcell should wrap those, grow or collapse according to views.
I am fairly new to IOS/Swift. Is there any way to implment this easily? In android I just used a linearlayout and added views one by one. Does IOS have something like that? Or do I have to manually set heights, widths, and coordinates of all items?

You can do with self-sizing cells, in this case you just need to
Give proper constraints to your table view cell subviews,(i.e all
your subviews should be connected to each other and topmost
subview should have top-space constraints and bottommost subview should have bottom-space constraints).
Specify the estimatedRowHeight of your table view.
Set the rowHeight of your table view to UITableViewAutomaticDimension
For step 2-3 steps mentioned above,just add following code in your viewDidLoad -
tableView.estimatedRowHeight = 44.0
tableView.rowHeight = UITableViewAutomaticDimension

Append item horizontally into a tableView cell but make them not fill all the space

I have a specific design that I want to achieve, it doesn't seems to complex to me but I'm struggling a lot to make it happen.
First the design looks like this:
So, I have a table view of items which have a picture, then a title and then a collection of three items which will be ImageViews.
All of this inside a cell and inside a stackView.
I tried to make an horizontal stack view and did manage to append my items correctly but it went horribly wrong in terms of design as my imageviews were stretching all the way horizontally. I guess this is not possible to NOT stretch this items.
I also tried to add a collection view into the table view but figured out that was very complex for a thing this basic (as I guess it should be). And then, I'm here.
Here is my code and where I'm stuck at:

I'm stuck and it's getting too long for something this little. Guess I'm a little bit upset with myself for not figuring out how to do it.
If you are having up to 5 participants, then I would suggest you to add by default 2 subviews in horizontal stack view:
empty view with width constraint >= 5 (call it spaceview)
fixed width for "60 % no" UILabel.
then programmatically insert image views with fixed width and aspect ratio 1:1 in horizontal stack view at index 0.
This way, if there will be only 1-2 participants, then the remaining space will be occupied by spaceview as its width will be greater than 5.
If the participants will be more than 5, then better option is to use collectionview with uilabel in horizontal stack view.
First if they are 3 static number of images then it's better to make them inside design and assign the image urls to their outlets respectively
Second for your current work you need to add a width constraint (regarding height they will fit all the stack height when it's a horizontal stack ) like
imageView.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
imageView.widthAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 50).isActive = true

How to equally space labels in a UIStackView?

As a technical assessment for a job I'm interviewing for, I'm making a basic word search game, where the user looks for translations of a given word in a given language. I've got a fair amount of iOS experience, but I've never done dynamically-generated views with run-time-determined text labels, etc. before.
To be clear, I know this is a job assessment, but regardless of whether I get the job, or whether I'm even able to finish the assessment in time, I think this is an interesting problem and I'd like to learn how to do this, so I'll be finishing this as an app to run in the simulator or on my own phone.
So. I have a view embedded in/controlled by a UINavigationController. I have a couple of informational labels at the top, a set of buttons to perform actions across the bottom of the view, and the main view area needs to contain a 2D grid of characters. I'd like to be able to take an action when a character is tapped, such as highlight the character if it's part of a valid word. I'd like to be able to support grids of different sizes, so I can't just create an autolayout-constrained grid of labels or buttons in Interface Builder.
I've tried various methods for displaying the 2D grid of characters, but the one I thought had the most promise was as follows:
Use a UITableView to represent the rows of characters. Inside each table view cell, use a UIStackView with a dynamically generated collection of UILabels.
To fill my UITableView, I have the following:

My guess is that it's running into trouble in that the labels have no visible rect when they're created, so they don't display anywhere.
The resulting view when run in the simulator is a white box covering as many rows of the table view as should be filled with rows of characters, and the rest of the table view shows with the custom background color I'm using), as per this image:
What I'm trying for is for that white box to have the same background color as everything else, and be filled with rows of characters. What am I missing?
Problem might be about adding 'labelRect', you already specify the rect of your stackView. I think regardless of the frame of labels, stackView should naturally be able to create it's inner labels and distribute them inside of itself.
Also can you add the following, after you initialize your stackView, inside your configureCell method:
self.stackView.axis = .horizontal
Edit: from the comment below, the solution was to create the labels (though I switched to buttons for further functionality), add them all to a [UIButton], then use that to create the UIStackView (self.stackView = UIStackView(arrangedSubviews: buttons)).

Xamarin iOS Autolayout: Resize width and vertical scroll automatically for various devices while keeping the horizontal scroll disabled

I want to create a page which has a vertical but no horizontal scroll. It must adjust width of the content and vertical scroll automatically as per screen size.
Something similar to this:
I can not use UITableView since, my page may not have necessarily homogenous elements. It could have a combination of textfields , dropdown etc.
The previous answer was quite right, but not right at all. Indeed I tried to solve this problem using the method described before, but to make it work, I made some adjustments.
Your view's hierarchy has to be as follow :
UIScrollview :
View1
View2
View3
You don't need a container inside the UIScrollview, because apart the fact that it will be an extraview that you don't need, there is the problem that if you use this container-view you will get problem getting touch events in the views added.
So, let's make a step-by-step process:
Add scrollview to your viewController
The first step is to add the scrollview to your viewController, and we can simply do this programmatically in the following way:

View is the main-view of the viewController you are working in (aka Self.View).
Put attention to set TranslateAutoResizionMaskIntoConstrains property of the scrollview to false, otherwise autoresizing will mess your constraints.
Add constraint (autolayout) to your scrollView
You need to ensure that you layout will adjust for every different iPhone-screen, so simply use auotlayout to pin your scrollView to the viewController main-view (is the View used in the next code sample):

Create the view to be added
You need to create the view that you will add to the scrollView:

We have created a new UIView that setting its frame large as the screen (UIScreen.MainScreen.Bounds.Width) so it won't scroll horizontally, and with an arbitrary height (200 in the sample).
NOTE : even in this case you have to set TranslateAutoResizingMaskProperty to false, otherwise you will get a mess.
Add the view to the scrollView
Next step is to add our new view to the scrollView as follow:
scrollView.AddSubview(view);
Nothing more.
Set constraint for the view added in relation to the scrollView
Once you have added your view you have to said which will her behavior related to the scrollView. We assume that we will add several view to the scrollView, so we have to made a distinction, to the behavior of the FIRST view, the IN-BETWEEN views, and the LAST view.
So to be clear we assume that we are adding only 3 views, so we will have the three different cases.
FIRST VIEW
The important thing is that the first view has to be pinned to the top of the scrollView, we do this as follow :
firstView.TopAnchor.ConstraintEqualTo(scrollView.TopAnchor, 0).Active = true;
and then we set the others constraints:
firstView.WidthAnchor.ConstraintEqualTo(firstView.Bounds.Width).Active = true;
firstView.HeightAnchor.ConstraintEqualTo(firstView.Bounds.Height).Active = true;
IN-BETWEEN VIEW
The in between views (in our sample the secondView) need to be pinned to the previous view added (in our case the first view). So we do as follow:
secondView.TopAnchor.ConstraintEqualTo(firstView.BottomAnchor).Active = true;
So the top of the secondView is pinned to the bottom of the firstView.
And then we add the others constraints:
secondView.WidthAnchor.ConstraintEqualTo(secondView.Bounds.Width).Active = true;
secondView.HeightAnchor.ConstraintEqualTo(secondView.Bounds.Height).Active = true;
LAST VIEW
The last view (in our case the third view) instead needs to be pinned to the bottom of the previousView (in our case the secondView) and to the bottom of the scrollView.
thirdView.TopAnchor.ConstraintEqualTo(secondView.BottomAnchor).Active = true;
thirdView.BottomAnchor.ConstraintEqualTo(scrollView.BottomAnchor).Active = true;
And the usual other constraints for width and eight:

In this way the eight of the scrollView will adapt to the eight of the views added, due to the fact that the views inside are pinned to the top and the bottom of the scrollView.
CONCLUSIONS
If you follow these simple instruction you will get everything work. Remember to disable autoResizingMask, as this is on of the common mistake.

I am doing this in my controller so cells resize themselves depending on how much height they need:

Now all you need to do is create cell files from within your IDE which should be .xib files and design them in the editor using autolayout (so they can adapt to orientation changes automatically).
Within your TableViews datasource all that's left to do is mapping between your data item and it's corresponding cell similar to:

That's all you need really. In my scenario i am mapping fields which may contain different controls for date entries, number entries, long texts, short texts etc etc.

3.Make sure top elements in container view must bind to top by adding top constraints and also bind bottom most element to bottom of container view by adding bottom constraints.And also all the items between topmost and bottommost in the container view must be vertically connected to each other so it will define the content size of container view.
it will define the actual content height for scrollview.

Refer to Step 1 and Step 2 ,set constraints on Scrollview and containerView.
I remove the margin between Scrollview and View , and I add some controls on the containerView , so it looks like as below:

Since we set the containerView's width equal to scrollview's width, the width is fixed, so we can scroll vertically not horizontally.
Height of controls and spaces between them should be set clearly, because the contentSize is auto calculated by adding them. (If contentSize is greater than the height of screen ,the scrollview can be scrolled)
I saw you set those constrains on controls , but you can't scroll down to see the controls out of screen, I think you are missing to set bottom margin on the last control(the downmost one).
Let us do a test.
1. We set the margin (between button and textfield ) to 1000 and don't set bottom margin between the textfield and containerView.
Result : can't scroll down to see the textfield out of screen.
2. Set the margin 1000 and add a bottom margin(10) between textfiled and containerView.

Different background and collectionCell separator color in UICollectionViewController

I have to create a UI which has 3 UICollectionViewCell in a row. So i created it using UICollectionViewController, with section = 1 and no of rows = coming from api. So i was able to create 6 cells in which every row contains 3 cells. These cells are separated by 0.5 pt vertically and horizontally.
I have given the background color to collectionView which comes in separator.
In particular this is what i need :-

The separators needs to be red, and the space not rendered needs to be yellow. But I am unable to do that, I can have a single background color for UICollectionView which shows for both separator and free space. Is there a way to have different colors.
I dont want to use UITableView and have a UICollectionView inside UITableViewCell. I know this approach but i want to do the same in UICollectionViewController.
If I understand your question right, you can solve this by removing the space between the cells. Remove the 0.5pt space entirely. Then, all cells will be glued to each other, and you can create your own separators inside each cell. It'll require some logic though, because all cells should not use the same separators (if you do, then the center cells will have double separators on each side).
To achieve your photo, you could set these rules:
The first and the last cell in each row should only show a separator on bottom.
All the other cells in between (in your case, one cell in between) should show separator on bottom, left, and right.
To add these separators, just go into your custom UICollectionViewCell and add some UIViews to each side, and set them to have a width of 0.5pt, and set them visible on demand.
I would suggest a custom cell as Sti suggested. I usually do that. but an easier way would be:
To add a subview to the collectionView every time you reload data of
the collection view.

UITableViewCell + Dynamic Height + Auto Layout

I came from this great answer: Using Auto Layout in UITableView for dynamic cell layouts & variable row heights
I've implemented the things described in that answer but I'm facing with a little different scenario. I haven't one UILabel but instead I have a dynamic list of UILabels.
I've created an image showing some different cases of what the table view should look:
At the current state of the repo the cell doesn't grow vertically to fit the cell's contentView.

If you try to get the project from the repo and run it, you can see exactly what is the problem I'm referring. I can't get what is missing for let it works.
The problem here is with the third party component you are using, FXLabel, not with any of the code around table views or Auto Layout in them. In order to support Auto Layout, custom subclasses of UIView must implement the -[intrinsicContentSize] method appropriately, and then call -[invalidateIntrinsicContentSize] when something changes it.
In this case, FXLabel appears to be relying on its superclass implementation (UILabel) for the above methods, and since UILabel was not designed to handle variable line spacing in the way that FXLabel implements it, it doesn't know the correct intrinsicContentSize to return, and therefore the Auto Layout calculations are wrong (in this case, since the intrinsic content size is too small). Check out the "Enabling Custom Views for Auto Layout" section of this excellent obcj.io article for more details.
Now the good news is that as of iOS 6, you should be able to accomplish this using an attributed string in a standard UILabel. Check out the Stack Overflow answer here.
If for some reason you really like FXLabel, perhaps you could open an issue on the GitHub project (or try and fix it yourself and submit a pull request).
To set automatic dimension for row height & estimated row height, ensure following steps to make, auto dimension effective for cell/row height layout.
Assign and implement dataSource and delegate

Set number of lines = 0 (& line break mode = truncate tail)
Set all constraints (top, bottom, right left) with respect to its superview/ cell container.
Optional: Set minimum height for label, if you want minimum vertical area covered by label, even if there is no data.
