Upload file to form and submit using REST api - ios

My Issue is that I need to upload a file to a server (using swift and REST) which will then be uploaded to a device. On the server I have a form (html,js) which can handle the upload to the device by sending the file in chunks using POST requests. So it seems I have two options.
1) I can skip the form altogether and post directly to the device, but I would have to handle slicing the file, and sending the data in chunks on the client side in swift, or
2) I can somehow use REST apis to upload the file to the input in the form, and then again use REST to submit the form allowing the server to handle the transaction between the device.
I can handle option 1 if 2 isn't possible, but I'm really hoping option 2 is possible, and I have very little experience in this neighborhood.

So, how large is "large data"? Files of 100MB are not unreasonable for current devices, 10MB or less is not large at all.
Slicing is sometimes done so that if the transmission is interrupted it can be resumed, AWS is an example.
If the data is to large to fully fit in memory consider using streaming to a file.

This is the approach I'd now recommend with a few caveats:
A relatively modern browser is required
If the file is expected to be very large you should likely do something similar to the original approach (iframe and cookie) because some of the below operations could likely consume system memory at least as large as the file being downloaded and/or other interesting CPU side effects.

2012 Original jQuery/iframe/Cookie based approach
Bluish is completely right about this, you can't do it through Ajax because JavaScript cannot save files directly to a user's computer (out of security concerns). Unfortunately pointing the main window's URL at your file download means you have little control over what the user experience is when a file download occurs.

Depending on what browsers you need to support you may be able to use https://github.com/eligrey/FileSaver.js/ which allows more explicit control than the IFRAME method jQuery File Download uses.

You don't need to do this through Ajax. Just use

NB: The file data returned MUST be base64 encoded because you cannot JSON encode binary data

In the above cases, you need to write the Content-Disposition header to the response, specifying that the file needs to be downloaded (attachment) and not opened by the browser (inline). You need to specify the Content Type too, and you may want to add the file name and length (to help the browser drawing a realistic progressbar).

The above snippet is just doing following
Posting an array as JSON to the server using XMLHttpRequest.
After fetching content as a blob(binary), we are creating a downloadable URL and attaching it to invisible "a" link then clicking it. I did a POST request here. Instead, you can go for a simple GET too. We cannot download the file through Ajax, must use XMLHttpRequest.
Here we need to carefully set few things on the server side. I set few headers in Python Django HttpResponse. You need to set them accordingly if you use other programming languages.

Since I download xls(excel) here, I adjusted contentType to above one. You need to set it according to your file type. You can use this technique to download any kind of files.

The params are sent as proper post params as if coming from an input rather than as a json encoded string as per the previous example.
CAVEAT: Be wary about the potential for variable injection on those forms. There might be a safer way to encode those variables. Alternatively contemplate escaping them.
My approach is completly based on jQuery. The problem for me was that it has to be a POST-HTTP call. And I wanted it to be done by jQuery alone.

Explanation:
What I and many others do is to create a link on the webpage, indicating that the target should be downloaded and putting the result of the http-request as the target. After that I append the link to the document than simply clicking the link and removing the link afterwards. You don't need an iframe anymore.
The magic lies in the lines

The interesting point is that this solution is only working with a "blob". As you can see in other answers, some are simply using a blob but not explaining why and how to create it.
As you can read e.g. in the Mozilla developer documentation you need a file, media ressource or blob for the function "createObjectURL()" to work. The problem is that your http-response might not be any of those.
Therefore the first thing you must do is to convert your response to a blob. This is what the first line does. Then you can use the "createObjectURL" with your newly created blob.
If you than click the link your browser will open a file-save dialog and you can save your data. Obviously it s possible that you cannot define a fixed filename for your file to download. Then you must make your response more complex like in the answer from Luke.
And don't forget to free up the memory especially when you are working with large files. For more examples and information you can look at the details of the JS blob object

I try to download a CSV file and then do something after download has finished. So I need to implement an appropriate callback function.
Using window.location="..." is not a good idea because I cannot operate the program after finishing download. Something like this, change header so it is not a good idea.
fetch is a good alternative however it cannot support IE 11. And window.URL.createObjectURL cannot support IE 11.You can refer this.
This is my code, it is similar to the code of Shahrukh Alam. But you should take care that window.URL.createObjectURL maybe create memory leaks. You can refer this. When response has arrived, data will be stored into memory of browser. So before you click a link, the file has been downloaded. It means that you can do anything after download.

For example, you can put this line of code in a click handler:

It will open a new tab (because of the '_blank' window-name) and that tab will open the URL.
Your server-side code should also have something like this:

And that way, the browser should prompt the user to save the file to disk, instead of just showing them the file. It will also automatically close the tab that it just opened.

I found a fix that while it's not actually using ajax it does allow you to use a javascript call to request the download and then get a callback when the download actually starts. I found this helpful if the link runs a server side script that takes a little bit to compose the file before sending it. so you can alert them that it's processing, and then when it does finally send the file remove that processing notification. which is why I wanted to try to load the file via ajax to begin with so that I could have an event happen when the file is requested and another when it actually starts downloading.

I think there's a way to read get data using js so then no php would be needed. but I don't know it off hand and the server I'm using supports php so this works for me. thought I'd share it in case it helps anyone.

Your action can implement ServletResponseAware to access getServletResponse()
It is certain that you can not do it through Ajax call.
However, there is a workaround.
Steps :
If you are using form.submit() for downloading the file, what you can do is :
Create an ajax call from client to server and store the file stream inside the session.
Upon "success" being returned from server, call your form.submit() to just stream the file stream stored in the session.
This is helpful in case when you want to decide whether or not file needs to be downloaded after making form.submit(), eg: there can be a case where on form.submit(), an exception occurs on the server side and instead of crashing, you might need to show a custom message on the client side, in such case this implementation might help.
there is another solution to download a web page in ajax. But I am referring to a page that must first be processed and then downloaded.
First you need to separate the page processing from the results download.
1) Only the page calculations are made in the ajax call.

How can we pass requests from one page to another in electron, like do we do in html or php.
For Eg: In html or php, we can pass them like test.html?name=jaydev
I want this in my electron app.

I use that convention for passing values to an iFrame loading within Electron – I don't know if it will work in your case, The script below is called when the page has loaded. It gets params which were passed to the src of the iFrame:

I don't know what you are trying to do or what data you are trying to pass between webcontent – but it seems like there are a variety of ways to go about it.
Pass the data back to the main process and have the new webcontent request it - or push it to the new webcontent once it has loaded.

Character encoding with utf-8 breaks all data if just one illegal character is present

I have a strange behaviour when reading data via a REST service from within my app.
I always encode my REST services with utf-8. This has proven to be a safe choice - until now. I am from Denmark and we have a handfuld of special characters, like: æøå.
So with this particular set of data the user has entered a smiley in the app - and the data has been sync'ed to the server. When the data subsequently is sent back to the phone ALL data in the request gets "scrambled". If I try the same request in any other tool (like various browsers and e.g. PostMan) then everything looks Ok (character set is utf-8 and only the smiley cannot be shown). However, in my app all of the non-english characters get scrambled.

When you launch the app it will show the data with "scrambled" characters. Then you can switch between the data set with/without the smiley using the buttons at the top.
The problem is consistent on iOS and Android. I am running Ti SDK 5.1.2 - I do not dare to upgrade until I have submitted an update to my "real" app shortly :-)
Ideally, I would also want to be able to show the smiley on the mobile device. However, I can live with it not showing correctly - as long as it does not spoil the entire dataset.
Any thoughts/ideas/insight is greatly appreciated :-)

Ok. This turned out to be a problem that was not related to Titanium/Appcelerator - apart from the entire request being broken if just one character didn't fit into the character set.
The backend server is an IBM XWork server and it turned out the REST service used a ResponseWriter (Java) that sends characters. Changing this to return at DataOutputStream (Java) that sends a byte stream instead solved the issue.
If anyone else run into similar problems then I have written a blog article about this where you can learn more. The solution is not specific for IBM XWork - but applies to any backend using Java :-)

How can I HTTP PUT 0 size file using XMLHttpRequest in javascript?

We are developing a javascript library for accessing webdav server. And find difficulties in developing upload functionality. We think we should use HTTP PUT for uploading and developed our upload codes using HTTP PUT. It was OK to upload files using http put to a webdav server.
But when we try to upload empty content using HTTP PUT, server replies 411 ( Length required ). We set content-length header but server still replies 411. We don't know why.
Is it right to develop webdav upload functionality using HTTP PUT?
If it is so, how can we develop to create 0 size file using webdav?

That sounds like a bug, either in the user agent or in the server.
a) Does this happen with all user agents?
b) Can you capture an HTTP trace and check whether the Content-Length header field is present?

What would unhook my View and Controller from each other in Chrome and IE but not in Firefox?

I have previously successfully tested this MVC functionality in my app in Chrome but have recenlty also tested in IE (10) and Firefox.
When I mash the submit button on a page which sends model values to its controller for running a query and generating a report, it now works only in Firefox (each of the three browser indeed have their own peculiar characteristics -- where they shine or "dull" in relation to their cohorts (gleaming in purple and gold) -- but Chrome and Firefox seem to have lost the connection between the submit button's click handler and the corresponding Controller's method.
The app seems to simply hang after mashing the submit button in Chrome and IE; the breakpoints I have -- the first of which is at the very beginning of the corresponding [HttpPost] ActionResult in the Controller class -- are not reached. In fact, the app seems to freeze after mashing the button -- right-clicking the submit button after that does not give me an "inspect that element" in the context menu.

UPDATE 3
The Network tab in the Chrome Developer Tools looks like the middle of Wyoming (a whole lot of nothing), with a msg about the bottom informing me "No requests captured. Reload the page to see detailed information on the network activity."
When I dutifully mashed F5, it showed all the .js and .css files accessed, and finally (at the top), the page I'm gawking at. Mashing the "View Report" causes no more activity in the tab, though. I do see the console.log() msg I placed at the end of the submit button click handler, though, to wit: "made it to the end of submit button click"
There is one err msg in the console, too, but this:

Based on Simon Halsey's hint, I found that, on stepping though the jQuery in Chrome, it fails this test:

Later: It's "" in Firefox, too...and the first time through, it also failed-wouldn't continue on. Second time through, it got through, though...???
There is two options:
There is no request due to javascript error
Your request signature doesnt math controller method

Browsers have different behaivior with some javascript functions. Thats one of the reasons why jQuery is so popular.
The most efficient way to find it is to debug javascript line by line in each browser.
Likely it is the reason.
B.
Also your javascript is quite exotic for me. I guess you are catching sumbit button click and modifying inputs values on a fly.
I would recommend to use $.post or $.ajax and preventDefault instead.
It would make your javascript more clear and simple.
C.
To analyze what requests are sent from your browser I would recommend to use fiddler.
