Using a value from Alamofire request outside the function - ios

I can't seem to figure this one out: I am trying to get an error from my server (in JSON) using an Alamofire request, but I cannot get the value outside the function.
This is the implementation of my function:

How can I "return" something from the function or wait for it to execute without blocking the UI?

Your operation is async, the way of waiting for the completion is just using closures, you're trying to return the value outside the closure so the value is not retrieved yet!! and it's the cause of your empty value, you can "throw" the completionHandler inside your closure like in the following example :

Nevertheless, in the above way the only way of you don't know if exist some error in the request because your completionHandler is called only inside the .Success case, if you want you can call it always, after the last case of the enum.

And if the jsonString is nil some error has ocurred, but again you don't know anything about the error, then you have two options :
Change your closure to always return the jsonString and the error too
Encapsulating the error into a throwable closure.
The first case is very simple, just change your closure and always have the error returned, if it's nil then no error ocurred.
The other option I think is the better, like in the following example:

The trick is that the alamoRequest function takes an additional closure called 'inner' of the type () throws -> String. This closure will either provide the result of the computation, or it will throw. The closure itself is being constructed during the computation by one of two means:
In case of an error: inner: {throw error}
In case of success: inner: {return result}

This code is not able to handle error response like 401, 404 etc from server. So what I am looking for, is to convert this api (URLRequest)request to generic Alamofire request with error handling like 401, 404 etc. I have install Alamofire pods. Is there anyone who has developed generic Alamofire request method with decoding & error handling?

The above class uses latest Alamofire version (as of now Feb 2020), This class covers almost every HTTP Method with option to send data in Application/JSON format or normal. With this class you get a lot of flexibility and it automatically converts response to your Swift Object.
Look at the init method of this class it has:
data: [String,Any] = In this you will put your form data.
headers: [String:String] = In this you can send custom headers that you want to send along with the request
url = Here you can specify full url, you can leave it blank if you already have defined baseurl in Class. it comes handy when you want to consume a REST service provided by a third party. Note: if you are filling the url then you should the next parameter service should be nil
service: services = It's an enum defined in the NetworkClass itself. these serves as endPoints. Look in the init method, if the url is nil but the service is not nil then it will append at the end of base url to make a full URL, example will be provided.
method: HTTPMethod = here you can specify which HTTP Method the request should use.
isJSONRequest = set to true by default. if you want to send normal request set it to false.
In the init method you can also specify common data or headers that you want to send with every request e.g. your application version number, iOS Version etc
Now Look at the execute method: it's a generic function which will return swift object of your choice if the response is success. It will print the response in string in case it fails to convert response to your swift object. if the response code doesn't fall under range 200-299 then it will be a failure and give you full debug description for detailed information.

In the last example you can see typeMismatch at the end, I tried to pass [String:Any] in the executeQuery but since the Any doesn't confirm to encodable I had to use String.
I use EVReflection with alamofire and i think this is one of the best combination to work with.
Use URLRequestConvertible protocol of Alamofire.

Please note that this will only work if you are getting object in response. If there is an array or string you have to make separate function for that and procedure for that is same as above. You will only get response if there is a success otherwise HandleResponseWithErrorForObject function will automatically handle it for you. Also, some variables might be missing in above explanation.
I'm sharing a specific part for error handling on my REST api.
It will decode inside the following block and probably you can use it for reference.
As you can see that's very simple getting a code and translate into an enumeration.
Alamofire allow that but it depends on your version of library.
Sometimes depends your REST api how handle errors internally, they can not throw a code for example if its Java backend, they can encapsulate the exceptions.

You probably need this function that uses the alamofilre Session Manager to perform requests. You can also set the cookies ant headers etc.. to this session manager so that you will have them to the rest of your requests.

I'm trying to verify a login and return a boolean value from my function accordingly, but my return statement keeps getting executed before the web service function is completed, even if I use an async method. I am using both Alamofire and SwiftyJSON.

Alamofire request coming up nil

I'm developing an iOS app which user WebServices and I find Alamofire just perfect for what I'm doing but I'm having a problem; the app asks the user to login which is an Alamofire call and does it just fine.
The problem is, it has to create a collection view based on the content of another Alamofire request but is always nil.

The same codeblock works perfect for the Login but doesn't in this case BTW the debug Print always print nil
You're trying to access to request.response before it has been set, remember that Alamofire works asynchronously, so you have to return in your case the JSON using closures, but remember that Alamofire also returns an error, so I strongly recommend use the following code instead:

The trick is that the getJSON function takes an additional closure called 'inner' of the type () throws -> JSON?. This closure will either provide the result of the computation, or it will throw. The closure itself is being constructed during the computation by one of two means:
In case of an error: inner: {throw error}
In case of success: inner: {return json}
And then you can call it like in this way:

Alamofire: 'weak' cannot be applied to non-class type error

I understand that this will throw error when use weak on non-reference type data. But, I use it on a class that is created by myself. Just wondering anyone having the same issue.

Paulw11 is correct. Because I am using static, that's why self does not make any sense. Low level mistake. Problem solved.

Strange error with underscore in Alamofire parameters

I am trying to pass username, password and grant_type values as a POST request.
Currently I have an array set up like :
params = [

]
When they get passed to my alamofire POST request though, and I log them out they look like this:

With pas and user being my inputted values.
This results in a 400 error from my server, I suspect its because grant_type is being read as having quotes for some reason?
