I am trying to get the days of a week in reference to their date.
Ex.: 14th October is a Wednesday.
I am creating a collection view cell and displaying the date as follows.
In the 14th cell it would display Wednesday, but how to get the next day as Thursday, then Friday...and so on.
I have got todays date and which day it is as follows,
day = [components day];
week = [components month];
year = [components year];
weekday = [components weekday];
NSString *string = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"%ld.%ld.%ld", (long)day, (long)week, (long)year];
NSLog(#"%#",string);
NSDate *todayDate = [NSDate date]; // get today date
NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
[dateFormatter setDateFormat:#"EEEE"];
NSString *convertedDateString = [dateFormatter stringFromDate:todayDate];// here convert date in
NSLog(#"Today formatted date is %#",convertedDateString);
And i have found this method online, which returns the days in string when you pass the integer, but i am having trouble in this too, not understanding which integer to pass every time so I get different strings.
static inline NSString *stringFromWeekday(int weekday){
static NSString *strings[] = {
#"Sunday",
#"Monday",
#"Tuesday",
#"Wednesday",
#"Thursday",
#"Friday",
#"Saturday",
};
return strings[weekday];
}
You already got everything in place. You should be getting the correct day name in the convertedDateString string. You just have to add 24 hours to your todayDate object and use the dateformatter again to get the next day.
NSDate *todayDate = [NSDate date]; // get today date
NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
[dateFormatter setDateFormat:#"EEEE"];
NSString *convertedDateString = [dateFormatter stringFromDate:todayDate];// here convert date in
You can get the next day like this.
NSDateComponents *dateComponents = [[NSCalendar currentCalendar] components:(NSDayCalendarUnit | NSMonthCalenderUnit | NSYearCalenderUnit | NSWeekdayCalendarUnit) fromDate:today];
[dateComponents setDay:dateComponents.day+1];
NSDate *nextDay = [dateComponents date];
// Get the day by following same approach in the top
You will get days in a week from today using below code.
NSDate *today = [NSDate date];
NSCalendar *gregorian = [[NSCalendar alloc]
initWithCalendarIdentifier:NSGregorianCalendar];
NSDateComponents *weekdayComponents =
[gregorian components:(NSDayCalendarUnit | NSWeekdayCalendarUnit) fromDate:today];
NSInteger day = [weekdayComponents day];
NSInteger weekday = [weekdayComponents weekday];

I'm using NSDateFormatter to format NSDate variables like this:
NSDateFormatter* dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
dateFormatter.dateFormat = #"dd/MM";
I want to provide an unique format only for the first day of year(setDateFormat:#"dd/MM/yyyy").
Is it possible?
Thanks in advance.
You can use something like this to format your date,
NSDate *dateInAction = [NSDate date]; //Your date here
NSDateComponents *components = [[NSCalendar currentCalendar] components:NSCalendarUnitDay | NSCalendarUnitMonth fromDate:dateInAction];
NSInteger day = [components day];
NSInteger month = [components month];
if (day==1 && month==1) {
// Set formatter for first day of year
}else{
// all other days
}
I need to get the weekday of the first day of the month. For example, for the current month September 2013 the first day falls on Sunday.
At first, get the first day of current month (for example):
NSDate *today = [NSDate date];
NSCalendar *gregorian = [[NSCalendar alloc] initWithCalendarIdentifier:NSGregorianCalendar];
NSDateComponents *components = [gregorian components:(NSEraCalendarUnit | NSYearCalendarUnit | NSMonthCalendarUnit) fromDate:today];
components.day = 1;
NSDate *firstDayOfMonth = [gregorian dateFromComponents:components];
Then use NSDateFormatter to print it as a weekday:
NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
[dateFormatter setDateFormat:#"EEEE"];
NSLog(#"%#", [dateFormatter stringFromDate:firstDayOfMonth]);
P.S. also take a look at Date Format Patterns
Here is the solution to getting the weekday name of the first day in the current month
NSDateComponents *weekdayComps = [[NSDateComponents alloc] init];
weekdayComps = [calendar.currentCalendar components:calendar.unitFlags fromDate:calendar.today];
weekdayComps.day = 1;
NSDateFormatter *weekDayFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc]init];
[weekDayFormatter setDateFormat:#"EEEE"];
NSString *firstweekday = [weekDayFormatter stringFromDate:[calendar.currentCalendar dateFromComponents:weekdayComps]];
NSLog(#"FIRST WEEKDAY: %#", firstweekday);
For the weekday index, use this
NSDate *weekDate = [calendar.currentCalendar dateFromComponents:weekdayComps];
NSDateComponents *components = [calendar.currentCalendar components: NSWeekdayCalendarUnit fromDate: weekDate];
NSUInteger weekdayIndex = [components weekday];
NSLog(#"WEEKDAY INDEX %i", weekdayIndex);
You can also increment or decrement the month if needed.
Depending on the output you need you may use NSDateFormatter (as it was already said) or you may use NSDateComponents class. NSDateFormatter will give you a string representation, NSDateComponents will give you integer values. Method weekday may do what you want.
NSDateComponents *components = ...;
NSInteger val = [components weekday];
For Swift 4.2
First:
extension Calendar {
func startOfMonth(_ date: Date) -> Date {
return self.date(from: self.dateComponents([.year, .month], from: date))!
}
}
Second:
self.firstWeekDay = calendar.component(.weekday, from: calendar.startOfMonth(Date()))
How can I have the title of UITableview with date?
I know I can edit the title using:
self.title=#"meals for ..";
I want to add the date for one week. How can I do that?
You can get a date like this:
NSDate *theDateToday = [NSDate date];
And format it like this:
NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
[dateFormatter setDateFormat:#"EEE MMM dd"];
NSString *theDateAsAString = [dateFormatter stringFromDate:theDateToday];
Combine that with what you have like this:
self.title = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"meals for %#", theDateAsAString];
As for finding the days of the week, you could try adapting this answer.
- (NSString *)getWeekStartDateAsString:(NSDate *)date {
NSCalendar *gregorian = [[NSCalendar alloc] initWithCalendarIdentifier:NSGregorianCalendar];
NSDateComponents *components = [gregorian components:NSWeekdayCalendarUnit | NSYearCalendarUnit | NSMonthCalendarUnit | NSDayCalendarUnit fromDate:today];
int dayofweek = [[[NSCalendar currentCalendar] components:NSWeekdayCalendarUnit fromDate:today] weekday];// this will give you current day of week
[components setDay:([components day] - ((dayofweek) - 2))];// for beginning of the week.
NSDate *beginningOfWeek = [gregorian dateFromComponents:components];
NSDateFormatter *dateFormat_first = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
[dateFormat_first setDateFormat:#"yyyy-MM-dd"];
dateString2Prev = [dateFormat stringFromDate:beginningOfWeek];
weekstartPrev = [[dateFormat_first dateFromString:dateString2Prev] retain];
return weekstartPrev;
}
- (NSString *)getWeekEndDateAsString:(NSDate *)date {
NSCalendar *gregorianEnd = [[NSCalendar alloc] initWithCalendarIdentifier:NSGregorianCalendar];
NSDateComponents *componentsEnd = [gregorianEnd components:NSWeekdayCalendarUnit | NSYearCalendarUnit | NSMonthCalendarUnit | NSDayCalendarUnit fromDate:today];
int Enddayofweek = [[[NSCalendar currentCalendar] components:NSWeekdayCalendarUnit fromDate:today] weekday];// this will give you current day of week
[componentsEnd setDay:([componentsEnd day]+(7-Enddayofweek)+1)];// for end day of the week
NSDate *EndOfWeek = [gregorianEnd dateFromComponents:componentsEnd];
NSDateFormatter *dateFormat_End = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
[dateFormat_End setDateFormat:#"yyyy-MM-dd"];
dateEndPrev = [dateFormat stringFromDate:EndOfWeek];
weekEndPrev = [[dateFormat_End dateFromString:dateEndPrev] retain];
return weekEndPrev;
}
You end result might look like this:
self.title = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"meals for %#-%#", [self getWeekStartDateAsString:theDateToday], [self getWeekEndDateAsString:theDateToday]];
A rarely known NSCalendar method will be the best option IMO
rangeOfUnit:startDate:interval:forDate:. It gives you the start and the duration (interval) for a certain time unit. With it it is easy to find the start of the week in the used calendar and add the range-1 to get the latest second in that week.
With the also rarely seen localizedStringFromDate:dateStyle:timeStyle: Available in OS X v10.6, iOS 4.0 it is easy to create a localized representation of the dates.
NSCalendar *cal = [NSCalendar currentCalendar];
NSDate *now = [NSDate date];
NSDate *startOfTheWeek;
NSDate *endOfWeek;
NSTimeInterval interval;
[cal rangeOfUnit:NSWeekCalendarUnit
startDate:&startOfTheWeek
interval:&interval
forDate:now];
//startOfWeek is 2013-06-02 22:00:00 +0000 now (note: it is GMT with timezone support for my timezone Europe/Berlin/DST)
endOfWeek = [startOfTheWeek dateByAddingTimeInterval:interval-1];
// 2013-06-09 21:59:59 +0000
NSString *text = [NSDateFormatter localizedStringFromDate:startOfTheWeek
dateStyle:NSDateFormatterShortStyle
timeStyle:NSDateFormatterNoStyle];
text = [text stringByAppendingString:#" to "];
text = [text stringByAppendingFormat:#"%#", [NSDateFormatter localizedStringFromDate:endOfWeek
dateStyle:NSDateFormatterShortStyle
timeStyle:NSDateFormatterNoStyle]];
self.title=text;
results in 03.06.13 to 09.06.13 for my german locale, where Monday is start of the week.
I'm having a array of dates in this dd MMM yyyy format.Now I need to separate month and year in separate arrays from this array. Now if I select particular month and year say if I bind the year and month arrays in UIpickerview and select a particular year and month I need to get the corresponding list of dates in that year and month which was the dates in previous original array. For eg if Jan and 2012 are selected I need to get dates like {01 Jan 2012,05 Jan 2012,..28 Jan 2012} . I'm a beginner in objective C any help will be appreciated.
First convert your string to NSDate by using NSDateFormatter, then using comparator extract day,month and year from the date, change the date format to your required format.
Check the following.
NSString *date = #"10/12/2012";
NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
[dateFormatter setDateFormat:#"dd/MM/yyyy"];
NSDate *dateFromString = [dateFormatter dateFromString:date];
NSCalendar *calendar =[NSCalendar currentCalendar];
NSDateComponents *components = [calendar components:(NSDayCalendarUnit | NSMonthCalendarUnit |NSYearCalendarUnit) fromDate:dateFromString];
int day =[components day]; //day from the date
int month = [components month];//month from the date
int year = [components year];// year from the date
[dateFormatter setDateFormat:#"dd MMM yyyy"] ;
NSString *InDate = [dateFormatter stringFromDate:dateFromString];//req format 10 jan 2012
Not exactly fulfilling your requirement but you can work around it.
NSDate *today = [NSDate date];
NSCalendar *gregorian = [[NSCalendar alloc]
initWithCalendarIdentifier:NSGregorianCalendar];
NSDateComponents *components =
[gregorian components:(NSMonthCalendarUnit |
NSYesrCalendarUnit) fromDate:today];
NSInteger month = [components month];
NSInteger year = [components year];
so in my app I want to subtract two dates. The first date is set date and the second one is the current date. So i tried this code:
NSString *setDateString = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"12:30"];
NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init];
NSDate *setDate = [dateFormatter dateFromString:setDateString];
NSTimeInterval interval = [[NSDate date] timeIntervalSinceDate:setDate];
But it counts the interval from 1970. But I need from the current day. Can anyone help?
I assume you want the difference between now and 1230 hrs of today. This can be done by
NSCalendar *gregorian = [[NSCalendar alloc] initWithCalendarIdentifier:NSGregorianCalendar];
NSDateComponents *components =[gregorian components:(NSDayCalendarUnit|NSYearCalendarUnit|NSMonthCalendarUnit) fromDate:today];
[components setHour:12];
[components setMinute:30];
[components setSecond:0];
NSDate *setDate=[gregorian dateFromComponents:components];
NSTimeInterval interval = [[NSDate date] timeIntervalSinceDate:setDate];
[gregorian release];
The reason it doesn't work for you is you've not given the format correctly. Alternatively, you can describe it correctly in setDateString by specifying all the components rather than just hour and minute.
