UITabBar / UITabBarController Blocking Touches When Scrolled Away - ios

I have a custom subclass of UITabBarController which adapts a delegate that has a function to shift the tabBar's frame (specifically frame.origin.y). When the offset is equal to the height of the screen (that is, it is hidden off-screen) I have a UIScrollView extending to the bottom of the screen. Within that UIScrollView, I cannot receive touches in the initial frame of the tabBar view.
I have seen recommendations to add intractable subviews to the UITabBar or the controller's view. This is far from elegant, and creates a multitude of design issues when working with views that possibly take up the whole screen. I have checked out the little public implementation code of UITabBarController and UITabBar but nothing I saw there shows how they are blocking those touches.
I'm aware of the recursive nature of hit tests, but short of overriding the hit test and rerouting the touch in the UITabBarController subclass, which seems rather unclean, I can't think of a generic way to handle this. This question dives into Apple's UITabBarController / UITabBar implementation, but I have included some relevant code for clarity:

Animating UINavigationController height during controller transition

I am designing an iOS app in swift, and I am having some difficulty with animations during a controller transition. Specifically, I've implemented a UINavigationControllerDelegate, to listen for when a certain view is pushed. When this view is pushed, I want to hide a bar at the bottom of the screen. My code is working almost perfectly, however whenever I begin an animation on the height of the navigation controller, the current view (which is being removed) animates its height correctly, but the new controller which is being pushed already has the new height from the animation. To put some code to it, the following function is called from my UINavigationControllerDelegate's willShow viewController function:

'playerHeight' is an IBOutlet to a constraint on the height of the player container view. 'viewBottom' is also an IBOutlet constraint between the bottom of the top container view and the bottom of the screen. Essentially, as long as these two constraints are animated together, it should look nice.
To help visualize the graphical bug, I edited this line

to
self.viewBottom.constant = height * 2.0

As you can see, the old view controller animates properly, when the new controller already has the new animated size.

Have you thought about not using UINavigationController? Maybe it will be easier to use ChildViewControllers mechanism. Then with it you can use a powerful autolayouts and have more control over animation (in your case height)

There are a number of things that could be going wrong, and since I haven't looked over your project personally it's likely I organized things very differently in my sample, but hopefully you will understand it. I think the big thing is that I added a constraint in storyboard to the navigationController's container to the bottom of the root viewController. I don't adjust the height of this container at all when I animate.

adding a uipageviewcontroller to a uistackview

I'm trying to add a sliding photo gallery functionality to the top portion of a view.
To give context, a user taps on a button or row or something. Then i load a scrollview with a uistackview in it. organized vertically, i had an image, and then another stack view with some text in it. Now, i want that image to become part of a larger "gallery". My research told me to implement UIPageviewcontroller and add the other images to a childVC.

the only relevant deviation from the tutorial my app has is that it creates things programmatically.
With my proof of concept for the gallery functionality, i wanted to integrate it with the previously mentioned stack view. my plan was to first add the pageviewcontroller stuff into the overall stack view with the original image view right below it and then simply remove the original image view to leave me the final product.
i was able to add the pageviewcontroller.view to the stackview, but the gallery doesn't show. taking a look at the UI Inspector, i can see that the gallery is kinda loaded, but it's messed up.
it's as if the uiview has a frame of 0 height and so the other stack view items don't respect the images that the pageviewcontroller is trying to show.
I think it could be that stack views can only handle specific views, not stuff as complicated as pageviewcontrollers.
also note: my implementation is all programmatic, no storyboards, and so for no xibs. so maybe i missed something here.

TLDR;
Create a subclass of UIPageViewController, make it it's own delegate.
Initialize the subclass with a plain UIViewController, only set a backgroundcolor.
In the pageviewcontroller subclass, implement the two delegate callbacks for a next and previous viewcontroller: create a plain viewcontrolller, with some random backgroundcolor.
If this works, replace the plain viewcontroller by your actual contentviewcontroller.

It might help, as it explains the details of UIPageViewController. Basically, you need to create a viewController (not a view!), that shows one page of the gallery. So this VC has a stackview, and manages the content of it. The pageviewcontroller is initialized with your first contentviewController. If you create a subclass of the uipageviewcontroller, you can set self of that subclass as the delegate of it. Implement the delegate callbacks that return the next or previous viewController and thats it. For this last part, it is convenient to have a property on the contentviewcontroller from which the subclasses of the pageviewcontroller can figure out what data to set on the next or previousviewcontroller.
Your title seeks to hint at some confusion: its not possible to add a viewcontroller to a view. You can only add other views to a (stack)view. A viewcontroller owns and manages a viewhierarchy. A pageviewcontroller has no content, but manages the insertion and removal of viewcontrollers. as the pageviewcontroller is a containerviewcontroller, it will als take the contentViewcontrollers' views and place them in the viewhierarchy. But this is not something your code has to do when you subclass UIPageViewControlller and implement it's delegates on itself (and don't forget to assign self to be the delegate).

Observe the transition state of UIPageViewController

I would like to tweak the visual state of a view based on how much it is "on screen". These views are managed by a UIPageViewController, using the stock .Scroll transition style.
The behavior I would like is to have the title be 100% opacity when it is 100% on screen and 0% opacity when it is 0% on screen, transitioning between the two as a function of the panning navigation gesture/animation.
I am hoping I can plug into the x-coordinate or a percentage animation complete, but I don't see a property anywhere. I understand the page view controller is using a scroll view behind the scenes but am a little concerned about reaching into a private API, and I don't see a public method to access it.
Is there any way to hook into the existing interactive transition so that I can add some additional behaviors to the child view controllers that scale based on the completion percentage?

Tried implementing UIScrollViewDelegate's scrollViewDidScroll. No luck. I think page view controller does to call methods on this delegate.
Tried using viewWillDisappear/viewDidAppear in the child view controllers. This is functional but the animation is not responsive since these are called as single events at the start/end of user behaviors.
You already update your question about UIScrollViewDelegate but, for simillary problem I use UIScrollViewDelegate like this:

UINavigationItem Prompt Issue

I'm having a problem with the prompt on a UINavigationItem that I just can't resolve...
I have a master and a detail view controller. When I push from the master to the detail a prompt is shown on the detail view controller:
However, when I pop back to the master view controller, the view isn't resized and the window shows through (the window has been coloured red):
This only happens on iOS7, on iOS6 the view resizes as expected.
I've tried a few things such as setting the prompt to nil in viewWillDisappear or viewDidDisappear but nothing seems to fix it.
If I set the navigation bar in the navigation controller to translucent it does fix this - unfortunately that's not an option.

A solution I can think of is to subclass the UIView of the master, and implement viewDidMoveToSuperview to set the frame of the view to be from the navigation bar's height to the end of the superview. Since the navigation bar is not translucent, your job is easier, as you don't have to take into account layout guides and content insets.
A few things to notice. When pushing and popping, the system moves your view controller's view into another superview for the animation and then returns it to the navigation controller's private view hierarchy. Also, when a view goes outside of the view hierarchy, the superview becomes nil.
Here is an example implementation:

This is not a perfect implementation because it uses a hardcoded value for the navigation bar's height, does not take into account a possible toolbar, etc. But all these you can add as properties to this view and in viewDidLoad, before it starts going into the view hierarchy, set the parameters according to your needs.
You can remove the prompt when the user taps the back button, like this

The problem exists whether your nav bars are opaque or translucent. It sucks that Apple has allowed this heinous bug to plague us for over three years now.
All of these solutions are hacks. My solution is to either A) NEVER use prompts, or B) use them in every single view even if you have to set them to "".
You've given the answer yourself - brilliantly. It's a bug, but checking Translucent avoids the bug. Therefore the solution is to check Translucent and then compensate so that the nav bar looks the way you want.
To do so, make a small black rectangle image and include it in your project. Set the background image of the nav bar to this image. Check Translucent. Problem solved! The nav bar is now black opaque in appearance, but it no longer exhibits the bug.

topLayoutGuide in child view controller

I have a UIPageViewController with translucent status bar and navigation bar. Its topLayoutGuide is 64 pixels, as expected.
However, the child view controllers of the UIPageViewController report a topLayoutGuide of 0 pixels, even if they're shown under the status bar and navigation bar.
Is this the expected behavior? If so, what's the best way to position a view of a child view controller under the real topLayoutGuide?
(short of using parentViewController.topLayoutGuide, which I'd consider a hack)
While this answer might be correct, I still found myself having to travel the containment tree up to find the right parent view controller and get what you describe as the "real topLayoutGuide". This way I can manually implement automaticallyAdjustsScrollViewInsets.
This is how I'm doing it:

I might be wrong, but in my opinion the behaviour is correct. The topLayout value can be used by the container view controller to layout its view's subviews.
The reference says:
To use a top layout guide without using constraints, obtain the guide’s position relative to the top bound of the containing view.
In the parent, relative to the containing view, the value will be 64.
In the child, relative to the containing view (the parent), the value will be 0.
In the container View Controller you could use the property this way:

The Child view controller does not need to know that there are a Navigation and a Status bar : its parent will have already laid out its subviews taking that into account.
If I create a new page based project, embed it in a navigation controller, and add this code to the parent view controllers it seems to be working fine:
you can add a constraint in the storyboard and change it in viewWillLayoutSubviews
something like this:

The documentation says to use topLayoutGuide in viewDidLayoutSubviews if you are using a UIViewController subclass, or layoutSubviews if you are using a UIView subclass.
If you use it in those methods you should get an appropriate non-zero value.

In case if you have UIPageViewController like OP does and you have for example collection view controllers as children. Turns out the fix for content inset is simple and it works on iOS 8:

How to set topLayoutGuide position for child view controller
Essentially, the container view controller should constrain the child view controller's (top|bottom|left|right)LayoutGuide as it would any other view. (In iOS 7, it was already fully constrained at a required priority, so this didn't work.)
I think the guides are definitely meant to be set for nested child controllers. For example, suppose you have:
A 100x50 screen, with a 20 pixel status bar at the top.
A top-level view controller, covering the whole window. Its topLayoutGuide is 20.
A nested view controller inside the top view covering the bottom 95 pixels, eg. 5 pixels down from the top of the screen. This view should have a topLayoutGuide of 15, since its top 15 pixels are covered by the status bar.
That would make sense: it means that the nested view controller can set constraints to prevent unwanted overlap, just like a top-level one. It doesn't have to care that it's nested, or where on the screen its parent is displaying it, and the parent view controller doesn't need to know how the child wants to interact with the status bar.
That also seems to be what the documentation--or some of the documentation, at least--says:
The top layout guide indicates the distance, in points, between the top of a view controller’s view and the bottom of the bottommost bar that overlays the view

That doesn't say anything about only working for top-level view controllers.
But, I don't know if this is what actually happens. I've definitely seen child view controllers with nonzero topLayoutGuides, but I'm still figuring out the quirks. (In my case the top guide should be zero, since the view isn't at the top of the screen, which is what I'm banging my head against at the moment...)
This is the approach for the known guide length. Create constrains not to guides, but to view's top with fixed constants assuming guide distance will be.

Not sure if anyone still got problem with this, as I still did a few minutes ago.
My problem is like this (source gif from https://knuspermagier.de/2014-fixing-uipageviewcontrollers-top-layout-guide-problems.html).
For short, my pageViewController has 3 child viewcontrollers. First viewcontroller is fine, but when I slide to the next one, the whole view is incorrectly offset to the top (~20 pixel, I guess), but will return to normal after my finger is off the screen.
I stayed up all night looking for solution for this but still no luck finding one.
Then suddenly I came up with this crazy idea:

This is an unfortunate behavior that appears to have been rectified in iOS 11 with the safe-area API revamp. That said, you will always get the correct value off the root view controller. For example, if you want the upper safe area height pre-iOS 11:
