I am having some information in build.xml file which I would like to access in Jenkins email plugin,to be able to send that parameter. How can I access the parameter in Jenkins ?
I would recommend to use the Inject Env plugin.
Instead of reading the build.xml file, move your properties in a dedicated file (build.properties for example).
Next, this plugin can inject variables in your job using the build.properties file.

I wanted to know whatever configuration we do for jenkins pipeline from the UI, where does it get stored. If I want to parse a file that contains all the info Provided for jenkins pipeline, which file should I look into and where is it stored?
All jobs' configs are stored in $JENKINS_HOME/jobs folder.
Take a look at config.xml file in required job's folder.
I've been asked to move some variable from a Groovy script out into a configuration file. I'm fine using something like :-
readFile('../xx-software.cfg').split('\n').each { fileName ->
sh "wget ${theURL}${fileName}"
}
However, even though I have added xx-software.cfg into the same directory as my Groovy script it does become available for use within that groovy script.
I hope this makes sense!?
How can I move my variables out into a config file to make it easier for the application support team to make future edits without changing the code?
There are a few approaches you could use.
Firstly, file format for the configuration and how to read the data into variables. You could use Java Properties format, YAML or JSON and these are all handled by the Pipeline Utility Steps plugin with steps here. You can read the file with these steps:
readProperties
readYaml
readJSON
Next problem, how to get the file available to your pipeline so it can be read from the workspace using these steps. Possibilities are:
In source control with your pipeline code. It can be fetched with the pipeline.
In a separate source control for configuration, your pipeline will need a step to fetch it.
Use the Jenkins Config File Provider plugin. It has a step to provide a config file managed in Jenkins.
Provide it as a Custom Tool zipped archive from a binary server like Artifactory. You can use custom tool definition pipeline steps to make this available to the pipeline.
The Config File Provider option might provide any easy way to have a file that can be updated, but there won't be any version control of it.
I am invoking a windows batch command from Jenkins, after i get the latest version of my project from SVN. the windows batch command just performs certain file copying, after the all the files are retrieved from SVN and runs an ANT build. In the ANT build process, i am generating a JSP file where i have tried to capture the in the following fashion.
%BUILD_TAG%-%BUILD_NUMBER%-%BUILD_ID%-%SVN_REVISION%
Unfortunately none of this information is understood by the build process and it just writes %BUILD_TAG%-%BUILD_NUMBER%-%BUILD_ID%-%SVN_REVISION% into the file.
Could you please let me know if there is a way to capture these information into a file in the way i am trying to do? if not, could you direct me on how these information could be captured into a JSP file during the process that we are following?
BUILD_TAG, SVN_REVISION, etc are all environment variables that are present during a Jenkins build, and to use them in Ant, you would use them as any other environment variable from Ant
First, add a line:
<property environment="env"/>
Then you can reference any environment variable with this prefix, like:
${env.VAR_NAME}
So in your case, you'd do:
${env.BUILD_TAG}-${env.BUILD_NUMBER}-${env.BUILD_ID}-${env.SVN_REVISION}
I've got a Job Parameter, for example PROPERTIES_FILE.
I want to inject all Env Variables from that file into my job session, using the EnvInject plugin.
Is there a way to do that?
I managed to inject variables
only for a hard coded file path, and not from a parameter.
EnvFile plugin (not EnvInject) seems to support variables in the properties file path (as it uses $WORKSPACE in the example).
Also, if you are on Windows, maybe all you need for EnvInject plugin to work is to use $param for variable, not %param%. While the scripts need %% notation, inside Jenkins still uses $
I'm using Jenkins and deploy plugin, with which I'm deploying to tomcat server. How can I pass parameters from properties file to this deploy plugin?
for example I want to pass my property app.server.url to Tomcat URL field.
I tried to pass $app.server.url also %app.server.url%, but that doesn't work.
I am assuming you have a properties file in the format app.server.url=somevalue
You then can inject these properties into the Jenkins environment using EnvInjec Plugin. Use Inject environment variables for your job build step, and just specify your file path (leave the content field blank). After that, you can reference it like this $app.server.url for *nix, or %app.server.url% for Windows. However this only works on the shell level. On the plugin properties level, a lot of plugins are expecting properties only in *nix-style format.
The further problem is that *nix-style variables do not allow dots .. So $app.server.url is not valid on *nix. I do not know if it will work on plugin-level on Windows though.
So after setting up EnvInject plugin, try the following two:
Try using $app.server.url in your deploy plugin.
Else change the property file to something like app_server_url=somevalue, and then try $app_server_url in deploy plugin.
