How to have two separate detailTextLabel values in UITableViewCell? - ios

I currently have one detailTextLabel value for every cell in my table, but I want it to have two, one for price and one for condition. This is how I currently have it set up:

cell.detailTextLabel.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"$%#", _matchCenterArray[indexPath.section][#"Top 3"][indexPath.row+1][#"Price"]];
cell.detailTextLabel.textColor = [UIColor colorWithRed:0/255.0f green:127/255.0f blue:31/255.0f alpha:1.0f];
I want condition to be a second detailTextLabel with a different color than the price one, and sitting right under it. Is there any way to include a secondary detail, or will I have to use a custom UITableViewCell? If the 2nd option, how would I go about doing this?

Personally I would subclass UITableViewCell and put whatever UILabels you need into it visually. You can then connect those two labels to the cell controller .h file as IBOutlets to allow you to manage them from the table view controller.
If you are using Storyboards and have a table view already plugged in, if you click on the prototype cell at the top (just once) and open the identity inspector you will see a category at the top "Custom Class". Once you write the code / design your custom cell you will put the class name you gave it in here to start using it. You will have to make sure that you set up the cell correctly in your cellForRowAtIndexPath: method in your table view controller implementation.
This is illustrated by the gentleman in this video (skip to 8:40 for the subclassing of UITableViewCell). He might be doing things a different way round than some other people, but the general principle is the same. Video

The easiest way to do this would be to add another label to the cells content view.
The alternative to this would be to create your own UITableviewcell that has 3 labels insted of 2

Implementing different user interaction function for subviews of a cell

I have a UICollectionView which allows for a user to select a cell and upon doing so view 'A' will appear. I am wondering if it is possible for the subviews of this cell, ex: UIlabel and UIImageView to provide a different functionality for when they alone are selected. For example, if the UIImageView is selected, I want to segue to view 'B' as opposed to 'A'.
I have attempted to implement a UITapGestureRecognizer for both the label and the image, however, the cell's functionality overrules and the resulting view is still 'A'. Any ideas?

What you want to achieve is possible through delegates if you don't have custom cell make a custom cell class then inside custom cell declare your protocol
I assume you have to disable the default behavior of the collection view cells:
cell.selectionStyle = UITableViewCellSelectionStyle.none
However, if you set that and you encounter an overlap issue, please take a look at the 'cancelTouchesInView' property of the 'UITapGestureRecognizer'. Basically, by setting that to false, you allow the children to also receive touch actions.
Furthermore, do not forget each gesture recognizer should have it's own method for you to be able to segue into two different places.

Swift custom cells layout TableView decision

I need to display a table with in my iPhone app:
neither the number of cells nor the contents are known at compile time, but only at run time.
Views for each cell may differ, one cell has textField and another may have some other view control.
Should I consider Static or prototype cells?
Should I consider tableViewController or viewController with tableview in it?
Any thing I need to consider before I start coding? Thanks in advance
For The issue of dynamic Number of cell at Run time, you can call reload data for table view at any time you have the data source ready.
Prototype Cells should be used with no problem.
Simple Table View will be sufficient for the task.
You have to make cell, either in code or in storyboard, for each type of cell you want, 1 table View can have multiple types of prototype cells, Just name them differently and then make the objects of only the specific cell of which the data is best suited.
It is not that difficult but do handle the data source with extreme care.
Should I consider Static or prototype cells?
If you know all possible subview combinations that your cells might need to display the data appropriately, and they are relatively few, make one prototype for each. for example:
One text field,
Two labels,
One image view and a label,
...etc.
Otherwise, just use the plain-vanilla UITableViewCell (no subclassing) and remove/add subviews at runtime when reusing them (that is, inside the method -tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath:).

The only reason I would choose UIViewController + UITableView over UITableViewController is if -for example- I needed the table view to only take up part of the main view's bounds/screen, and display some other subview in the remainder. Otherwise, you get so much "for free" with UITableViewController that there's just no point in implementing all of that from scratch.
You have to choose prototype cell, u can create different types of cell depending upon your requirement.Any think ok for u, u can create tableview controller or view controller.

Access child views in custom UITableViewCell

Background:
I am trying to create a table view with around 4 types of different cell layout.
At first, I considered using static table view to solve the issue since the number of rows are somewhat fixed (nor more than 10)
But, after some thinking, I decided that I don't really want to be tied up to the UITableViewController. Thus, I tried to implement it with dynamic table view.
Question:
After I create 4 prototype cells, I found out that I'll need to access the child views in cell (to update their value). But the only possible ways I know seem to be:
1. Create a subclass for each prototype cell, and create `IBOutlet` to the child views
2. Assign `tag` for each child view for later access
But I don't really like these two methods...
The first one is too cumbersome, and the tag in the 2nd solution does't seem to be very sepcific (access the child view by just some magic number..)
So, I would like to know:
Is there any better practice for implementing this kind of
tableview. (multiple cell prototypes, and fixed row numbers)
Is static table view a better way to do it? If yes, will there be
any limitations when I am tied up to UITableViewController?
For example, if I need more complex UI, and decide to add more views on to it, will UITableViewController be less flexible than UIViewController

If the cells are very similar but with different layouts they could share a common UITableViewCell subclass provided the class doesn't need to know the layout it is in just configure the available outlets.
If the code does need to be aware of the layout used then it is probably best to make them separate subclasses.
For Swift use is or as? to confirm the correct subclass for the cell (for Objective C it would be the isKindOfClass method).
1.You do need to subclass the UITableViewCell if you want to access his IBOutlets.
In order to distinguish between the cell just use isKindOfClass
2.It depends how different your cell are from one another. If they have slightly different structure you might want to consider lodging the elements in cellForRow. Try to take a look at the built in structure cause it might save you some subclassing.
These structures have built in parameters such as: image,text etc.

UITableView additional information before detailed page?

I have a scenario where my table view output will be in the following format:
INC123 >
INC234 >
INC777 >
When an option is selected, the details about the ticket (selected option) is displayed.
What I would like to have is:
INC123 >
(Short description aboutt this, both under one table cell but the short description can be greyed out or lighter than the ticket number
INC234 >
(Short description about this)
INC777 >

Yes, it is entirely possible. Implement this into your cellForRowAtIndexPath method:
cell.textLabel.text = INC_STRING_OBJECT;
cell.detailTextLabel.text = INC_STRING_OBJECT.STRING_DESCRIPTION_PROPERTY;
Be sure that your storyboard scene for the tableview has cells that are of the "subtitle" type to get access to the detail label.
This is very simple. You can design your cell in storyboard to include the description labels. Just set the cell to "Custom", drag to make the prototype cell larger, drag UILabel objects to the cell and customise.
In cellForRowAtIndexPath you can configure the text labels. One way is to add a tag and access the label with
UILabel *label = (UILabel*)[cell viewWithTag:kLabelTag];

Strange error when adding items to prototype cells in storyboard-IB

I have quite a large project (~20 scenes). One of which is a TableViewController with a custom UITableViewController class. I have given the cell a reuse identifier, and added a label to it. When I try and Ctrl+Drag the label to the UITableViewController header file to create an outlet, I get the following error:
error: Illegal Configuration: Connection "tableInfoView" cannot have a
prototype object as its destination.
What is this? Am I overlooking something obvious? Or do I need to create a custom cell class and drag the outlet to that? If so, how do I then specify the data which is displayed uniquely for each cell from the UITableViewController?
In fact you can't just make an outlet from a dynamic cell prototype in the UITableView delegate view controller.
You'll have to subclass UITableViewCell and then attribute this class to your prototype.
Then you can Ctrl-Drag from the Label to the UITableViewCell subclass header file.
Finaly you can access to this outlet in the delegate code after having imported the UITableViewCell header file in it.
This is documented by Apple there at "The Technique for Dynamic Row Content" section.
or you could give the label a tag (e.g. 100) and use
myLabel = [myTableView viewForTag:100];
to get the label
I had the same error myself. Just to add one more potantial root cause for future readers:
In my case I copied a control (a Button in this case) from one prototype cell to the next and the action still referred to the neighbor cell. My table has several different prototype cells.
The fact, that it acutally was a proper subclass of UITableViewCell which was properly connected to the prototype cell made it difficult to actually see the mistake.
Tag the label and you can reach the label anywhere in the viewcontroller like with viewWithTag from the table view.
UILabel *destinationLabel = (UILabel *)[self.tableView viewWithTag:1];
destinationLabel.text = #"Label Destaination";
I faced the same problem but later it turned out that it was just a silly mistake.
I mistakenly dragged the label from Cell to my controller's #interface
This could be your problem too. just cross check once.
Set the right reuse identifier used in .m file in the Storyboard for the Prototype cell.I had the same situation and this helped me
After doing every thing right if problem still exist then just removed all outlets and rejoin them carefully and it worked very fine for me.
