I've updated to Xcode 6, the latest one appeared on the AppStore. I am running OS X Yosemite Beta 3 and apparently, I can open up only the iOS playground and the OS X one is missing from the list.
I attached a screenshot. Hm, any ideas?
You can download Xcode 6.1 which has the swift for Mac OS X.

Swift for OS X
Today is the GM date for Swift on iOS. We have one more GM date to go for Mac. Swift for OS X currently requires the SDK for OS X Yosemite, and when Yosemite ships later this fall, Swift will also be GM on the Mac. In the meantime, you can keep developing your Mac apps with Swift by downloading the beta of Xcode 6.1.
As you can see, if you start an empty project and chose OS X, you don't have swift as language. So only ObjectiveC as language for Cocoa-based apps. Maybe in Yosemite final this feature will be implemented. I think we should wait GM date for Swift & Yosemite to go for Mac.

I'm just starting to learn iOS development. I have an old macbook pro that is running El Capitan (10.11.6). I was reading that the last version of Xcode that would be compatible is 8.2. If there is a later version that will work fine, let me know.
What are the drawbacks of developing in 8.2 as apposed to 9.2, the most recent version? am I going to face any major issues if I develop on 8.2?
Thanks in advance for the replies.
The biggest drawback is probably that you won't have access to the iOS 11 SDK which ships with Xcode 9. That means that you won't be able to use any functionality that is new to iOS 11 in your application. If you're using Swift, you also won't get the latest version.
You will face language issue because Xcode 8.2 support Swift 2.3 while Xcode 9.2 support latest swift 4.0
Xcode 9 includes SDKs for iOS 11.2, watchOS 4.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2
Xcode 9.2 having iPhone x simulator (new device)
You face issues while migrating to latest one.
If your macbook spec is not fast enough latest xcode will make u suffer. also latest xcode requires MacOSX High Sierra too. However just for comparison, my Mac Mini 2012 runs "ok ish" on Mac High Sierra and XCode 9.2. So if your macbook spec is similar to mine then you ought to use latest one.
Xcode 7 allows you to test and debug iOS apps on iPhone (similar to android)
However I am running os x yosemite 10.10 and it is impossible for me to upgrade my os.
According to the docs, I need at the very least 10.10.4 in order to obtain xcode 7.
I saw on stackoverflow that xcode 7 beta is available to 10.10. My question is I don't know if the beta supports physical iPhone testing?
So if I try xcode 7 beta, can I test on a physical device? Or can I somehow get physical iPhone testing on xcode6.4 (the latest version yosemite 10.10 allows me to have)? Thanks
I have an existing app that need to be made compatible to ios7. I am new to ios app development. I have following things:
1. Macbook with MAC OS 10.6.8
2. X code - 4.2
is it possible to recompile the existing app using above to make it compatible for ios7?
(I know i need atleast MAC OS 10.8 for xcode5)
A little detailed explanation is highly appreciable as I am still figuring out how it works.
If not what all I would need to achieve same? If yes, how?
Its must to have xcode 5 or 5.1 to make app ios7 compatible.
Nope. iOS7 requires Xcode 5+ which requires mavericks. You can upgrade for free to mavericks and get Xcode.
Just open the App Store and upgrade to mavericks (5.3 GB) and then get Xcode 5.1
iOS7 developemnt only available with xcode5 and xcode5 is support minimum os version is MAC OS10.8 so first off all you have to upgrade os then xcode also then you can do your task.
From 1st Feb every app must be build in Xcode 5 and above as per apple declaration
I don't know about your existing app, but iOS 7 can run iOS 6 app, it shouldn't be an issue to just let your old app runs.
Of course, you will have to have xCode 5 in order to run and debug on iOS 7 device and simulator.
When I writing this question these are the latest XCode and OS X versions, just updated yesterday.
I can not believe that the only iOS version is 7.1 I can test my application against with the simulator... Or Apple suppose that all the mobile device owners have this latest iOS, and I as a developer targeting these users should share this crazy idea?
I must missed something, please point it out.
Almost forget: Where is the home button? See attached picture.
To download older versions:
Xcode / Preferences... / Downloads / You can download older Simulator versions from there
However, you are right, in Xcode 5.1 the only 2 older versions available are 7.0 and 6.1 if you are running Maverick.
Home Button: Shift + cmd + H
iOS 5 simulator is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.9.2 (Maverick), so unless you have older machine with older OS, you're out of luck.
Other simulators you can download via Xcode Preferences - Downloads area. There's 6.1 and 7.0 currently.
Home button in simulator is shift-command-H (check the simulator menubar)
I have vmware running OS X 10.6, therefore had do download xcode 4.2 because 4.5 was incompatible with OS X 10.6. And now it seems I cant create an .ipa file from the app I built bc my iphone has iOS 6.
Is there a work around for all of this so i can create an the .ipa file using my ios6 device?
I don't think xCode 4.2 is able to build iOS6 IPAs.
Since iOS 6 introduces some new features like auto-layout, which is only available in xCode 4.5
So I recommend you upgrade your OS to use xCode 4.5 instead, which is also recommended by Apple that the developer should use the lastest OS X.
