I wanted to download this sample http://mvctimeplanner.codeplex.com/
The author did not attach solution file only the project(all source files inside the project folder).
How to create solution from those files?
EDIT
Also it is ASP .NET MVC 2 project, and the oldest I got is ASP .NET MVC 4 and I use ASP .NET MVC 5.1 so running failed.
Is there a similar demo which I can just download and run to see how it works? I looked for a while month ago and now and I cannot find one.
You should open that folder as a website by going to File > Open > Website in Visual Studio
For your other question, you should check this answer.

When I try to open an existing solution (to ultimately convert it to later MVC and .NET packages), VS2015 rejects the project:
The application which this project type is based on was not found. Please try this link for further information: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=299083&projecttype=E53F8FEA-EAE0-44A6-8774-FFD645390401
That link is worthless as it takes me to a VS2013 compatibility page.
My goal is to migrate the project from MVC3/.NET4.0 to MVC5/.NET4.5.
I can't target a later MVC or .NET in VS2010. VS2015 won't open the older project so the solution here won't work Some (official or not) upgrade Mvc3 to Mvc5 guide?? for changing the properties of the project since the project won't open.
Mvc3 is not supported after VS2010.Iuse VS2010SP1.
You may make it work but it will bite you in the end.
You have to choose the VS version and the corresponding Mvc version
I went into the csproj file manually and switched the ProjectTypeGuid to that of an MVC4 project: E3E379DF-F4C6-4180-9B81-6769533ABE47. Then VS2015 was able to open the project and it upgraded it to MVC5 guid correctly.
I've got an old project from a friend that he wants me to do redo. How ever that project is written in ASP.net mvc2. So When I try to open it in visual studio 2013 I can errors. Saying the file is incompatible. How would I go ahead and fix this?
I would highly recommend you to create a new empty MVC 5 project, and move all your files there from old MVC 2 project. If you just try to update DLLs its very hard be sure if you updated all DLLs, proj file, nugets, or at least little bit more work by copying files is well worth it. Problem is that VS2013 is not compatible with old version of MVC framework.
But, if you really want to open MVC 2 solution in VS2013, you can try following some steps described here: How do I open an old MVC project in Visual Studio 2012 or Visual Studio 2013? (contains a project Guid that needs to be changed inside .proj file)
I'm using Visual Studio 2012 and have just installed "Microsoft ASP.NET and Web Frameworks 2013.1 - Visual Studio".
As expected, it added the option to create an "ASP.NET MVC 5 Empty Project". The thing is, I see no way of jump-starting an already functional "base application" as I had when I was using MVC 4 (e.g. "Asp.NET MVC 4 Web Application"). I only see an empty template.
I've seen answers such as:
How can I add the MVC 5 project template to VS 2012?
Create and Run MVC 5 Project in VS 2012
Direct download link to ASP.NET MVC 5 for VS 2012
And found this article on the matter.
This is obviously not a show-stopper as I can always create the application from a scratch, but I still would like to know if it is possible to achieve that on VS 2012. Did I miss a step, or do I need VS 2013 for that? A fully functional Web application template (with authentication etc.) would be nice to dabble around MVC 5's new features or for prototyping.
After creating a new project using ASP.NET MVC 5 Empty Project, you can right click on the project, then click Add.. > New Scaffolded Item..., select MVC on the left, then MVC 5 Dependencies and choose Full dependencies from the prompt.
This will add a default layout (Views\Shared\_Layout.cshtml), Content folder, Scripts folder with bootstrap, jquery, modernizr, etc, and other things the Web Application template creates.
If you get the error "CS0103: The name 'Styles' does not exist in the current context" just add <add namespace="System.Web.Optimization"/> under <namespaces> in Views/web.config
The answer from Sean Lynch is nice but not really complete.
However there is this nice guy that took the time to prepare the template just like in Visual Studio 2013. You will get everything down to the bootstrap template and pre-configured database table for authentication.
All you need to do is change the DefaultConnection in Web.Config to you SQL Server and voila all the relevant authentication table will be created for you.

Update
The original blog is no longer online, but thankfully his template is still online. You can download the MVC5 Template for Visual Studio 2012 Here:
Direct link to MVC5 Template For Visual Studio 2012
And here is the excerpt from the original blog:
Installing the template is very simple, there are just two steps:
Copy it into the following folder of your computer (creating the directory structure if necessary):
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual C#\Web
Once you’ve done this, simply restart Visual Studio and you will have this template available in the dialog box to create a new project under “Visual C# > Web”.
Now you can create applications with a little more shape than the mere empty structure provided by default and enjoy the benefits of adopting Bootstrap and its responsive design, a full membership system and user authentication, bundles, filters, some content pages, etc.
You have 2 option to fix it.
Install the latest 2013 version which have MVC5 support inbuilt (VS2013 missing MVC3 and ASPX file template (ASPX templates will be added in future))
stay with 2012 update 4. Read my old article to get it fixed http://geekswithblogs.net/anirugu/archive/2013/11/28/mvc-5-in-visual-studio-2012-update-4.-how-to.aspx
I'm not using 2012 now, but rather 2013, and I see the mvc 5 template there. However, I did this a while back before I had any mvc 5 templates showing up by installing mvc 5 first. You should be able to download from http://www.asp.net/mvc/mvc5.
Also make sure your target framework is set correctly.
Then I updated the web config like this:
You have to have the correct versions of the assemblies. I googled a lot to get this info, so it should still be available if you do some research.
I am working on a project that started out using ASP.Net MVC 1 and has since been upgraded to ASP.Net MVC 3. It is my understanding that if I am running my ASP.NET MVC 3 app on IIS 7 using the integrated pipeline that I no longer need the Default.aspx file. However after I have removed the file from the project and physically deleted it I get the following error every time I try to compile in Release mode:
Description: Could not load type 'ProjectName.Default'.
File: Default.Aspx
I have verified that there is no instance of ProjectName.Default or Default.aspx in my project file. I have even done a grep search in all of my files in the project for any mention those names and still have found nothing. What do I need to do to be able to remove Default.aspx from my ASP.Net MVC 3 app and get it to compile in release mode. It compiles just fine in Debug mode by the way.
From the debugging listed here you probably had a cached version of your compiled code. While Visual Studio builds the code behind files into a single DLL, ASP.NET compiles each aspx file into a DLL as well (depending on how you configure it, there can be variations on this). These DLLs are located at %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files note that this directory is sensitive to .Net version, could be in 2.0 or 4.0, it is also in some way dependent on bit-ness, as there is a similar directory in Framework64.
I tried to clean my solution, delete the project temp files, remove all the leftover crud I could think of. Unfortunately none of this worked so I had to take the brute force approach and checkout a new copy of my project. After doing this I no longer had the error occur when building the new copy that had Default.aspx removed. Unfortunately this solution did not provide me any insight into what leftover file Visual Studio was holding onto.
It seems I cannot upgrade my ASP.NET MVC v1 project to be able to open it in Visual Studio 2010. Anyone noticed that already?
"The project type is not supported by this installation."
??
edit...I actually want to upgrade it to ASP.NET MVC v2 if possible. If not, I will probably create a new ASP.NET MVC v2 project and copy the files there and then try to build.
Can't seem to get it why there are no replies yet, didn't anyone try this out yet?
To upgrade an existing ASP.NET MVC 1.0 application to version 2, follow these steps:
Make a backup of the existing project.
Open the project file in a text editor (the file with the .csproj or .vbproj file extension) and find the ProjectTypeGuid element.
As the value of that element, replace the GUID {603c0e0b-db56-11dc-be95-000d561079b0} with {F85E285D-A4E0-4152-9332-AB1D724D3325}.
When you are done, the value of that element should be as follows:
{F85E285D-A4E0-4152-9332-AB1D724D3325};{349c5851-65df-11da-9384-00065b846f21};{fae04ec0-301f-11d3-bf4b-00c04f79efbc}
