I am having data in the Hbase. Now i need to develop a web application in rails using this data.
can anyone help me on this how to proceed.
Hbase is a column based DB like cassandra and mongo-db.
I guess to start with you can use rhino and bigRecord or stargate.
Rhino and stargate and maintained but you can get the idea of how to start on this.
Let me know if that helps.

I need to Query an online SQL database from an iPhone app. I have been researching and have not been able to find a way to use SQL to directly query my non-local online database from my iOS app.
Is there any way to do this?
Or do you need a web service, restful api using json?
If so, can you lead me in the right direction on creating a web service (or resources that handle that for you)?
I have be trying the same thing and I endet up doing it via a MySQL DataBase on a 1&1 web domain, to Query the DataBase I made a PHP program, using (like you said) JSON to be read by the app. I dont know if that is what you meant if not maybe specifie pls. XD
Perhaps like some of you, I am inundated by the number of JavaScript MV* out there. When I thought I was going KO, I found Backbone, then Ember.
I recently saw some demos on Meteor and I am extremely impressed. But I know nothing of Mongo and I "think" Meteor requires it. (http://www.meteor.com/screencast)
I am too heavily invested in Entity Framework & ASP.net MVC to move away from them but Meteor looks like a terrific client side MV*.
Does anyone know if Meteor can work with a Microsoft back end (ie EF and ASP.net MVC)?
Thanks.
UPDATE:
Yes I see the NuGet package for MongoDb, but truth be told I am only interested in Meteor. Is it a both or nothing situation? Meteor looks like bleeding edge and I really would appreciate any links to documentation on its use with a MS backend.
For anyone still reading this in 2013 or later - it's now possible to run Node.js on Windows under IIS (just install the support with the Web Platform Installer).
There's also versions of Meteor and MongoDB for Windows and Meteor supports deploying a bundle that will run under "pure" node.js
As far as I know, You can't. it runs over Node.js, additionally there is a client implementation of a MongoDB like API that would be a pain to implement with a EF backend I think
Yes, sort of. Meteor runs server-side code using node.js, but also provides some very useful services on the client side like templates, routes, collections, session variables, and reactivity.
The way to use it with a .net back-end (or any other language) is to create an api that can be accessed with Meteor. You can create Meteor collections in the client code, which don't need a mongodb instance. Simply access the api to load the collections with the correct data, and then you can use Meteor as you would normally.
However, for most apps it would be much simpler to implement everything in Meteor.
I'm looking at leveraging an existing Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Service (SSAS) instance for a reporting project. The goal is to have the data compiled in SSAS, then a web front-end that allows the user change time-periods, while building graphics (using D3 or the like).
Google has not been my friend in finding a solution for this...
Is there a gem or other way to connect SSAS to a Rails front-end?
Thanks
JSON, no, not that I know of. However if you are willing to use XML, then yes. XMLA (documented here) is the client API language for SSAS.
One approach would be to build a web service with .NET, and then have your Rails front-end call the web service.
I suppose you could use XMLA directly, but it's painful.
I need to populate a table in an iOS application with data from a Web database
I already have a MySQL database set up but reading about this it seems there must be an easier way for the iOS to interact with a web database
Any help or pointers would be appreciated,
Thanks
You should make an API interface.
Then use the API to communicate with the database. Using the database directly is a very bad thing to do.
If you are really desperate, consider using the MySQL C library. This article explains it in great detail:
http://www.karlkraft.com/index.php/2010/09/17/mysql-for-iphone-and-osx/
For my application, I chose to create a web service to act as an intermediary between my application and the database.
This layout has several advantages. Considering you have MySQL database you can try to create some php scripts (I chose php because the API to work with mysql is very very simple and as you said, you don't need very high security or performance).
You can use these scripts through HTTP requests (you can use NSURLConnection to do these).. These scripts connect to mysql , fetch the data you need to pass the result back to the application in an easier to use format (e.g. I use JSON).
I am wondering how to integrate node.js on a rails app (for learning purpose).
Based on Michael Hartl tutorial (http://railstutorial.org/) I realized a basic twitter clone with rails and want to get user microposts in real-time without the use of comet or juggernaut. (the application is hosted on heroku)
For the moment, I only see example with node.js frameworks (http://howtonode.org/grasshopper-shoutbox) but nothing merged with a ruby on rails app.
I would be very thankful if someone knows a good tutorial or give me some points to start in order to accomplish this.
Thanks!
As Shripad said, I'd consider trying to build your app with Node by itself. Geddy will feel familiar (getting started anyway) if you have experience with Rails. Note: I do not have experience on a real world app with Geddy, but it is the best Rails-like framework I've seen so far. For persistence you can use SQLite, PostgreSQL or CouchDB, just like you would with Rails. I thought about how to communicate between a Rails app and Node without any intermediary. In our work project we're using Redis as an intermediary between Rails and Node. Rails publishes messages to Redis, Node pulls messages from Redis. I could not find a good way or example projects to avoid the middle communication layer on a personal project, so I went with the same setup. The good news is Node Redis modules are written and once you get everything installed, it is easy to test out pushing messages back and forth.
If you are looking at creating real-time apps then go with node.js (high concurrency) alone. You really cannot integrate node.js into a rails app. You can however have a node server setup on another port with an api and websockets configured and then have your rails app communicate with that server. It is PITA to do that kind of setup. You rather build the entire web app in node itself. However, if you want anything rails specific that does not use juggernaut then i would suggest http://www.pusherapp.com.
Its extremely easy to setup server push using Pusher.
It already did. Not really NodeJs but a framework built on top if it. Yada, yada, yada... check this out: https://github.com/1602/express-on-railway
**Run node along side your rails server**
If you want to intergrate your Rails app with Node you could use the node-rails gem
Node Rails will enable you to run a Node server along side your Rails application and have the two share authentication NodeRails assumes you are using Devise for your authentication. Node-Rails uses [redis gem][2] , so you will need to have that installed.
