I'm learning iPhone app development.
For backward compatibility testing purposes I'm keeping an old iPhone on iOS 4. It's on iOS 4.2, but a lot of reasons (especially Corona) are pushing me to bring it up just a little, to iOS 4.3. It's a Verizon iPhone 4. Looking on iClarified, I can't find a version of iOS 4.3 that will install to my phone. Like it's missing or something.
Anybody out there understand this list, to know whether it's missing or what version I should be downloading?
As far as I know, there is no 4.3 for iPhone 4 CDMA.

We just finished building an iOS 8 app for the iPhone 5, 6, and 6 Plus. It is limited it to iOS 8 and iPhone as shown below.
Unfortunately it got rejected because a button could not be accessed since it was offscreen. We appealed immediately saying that it had been tested on the supported platforms. That was submitted an hour ago.
If the App must support the iPhone 4s (Edited: I originally said 4) I would like to know so I can immediately submit a new build and get it in the queue instead of waiting for the appeal process. If anyone has advice from a similar predicament I would appreciate it.
It should support any hardware platform that is capable of running the deployment target software. Fix it for the 4s and re-submit the new build ASAP.
The iPhone 4s runs iOS 8. I would therefore assume Apple tested on an iPhone 4s.
The iPhone 4 does not support iOS 8 so that won't be a factor.
I don't think so. When Apple releases a new device it almost certainly releases an upgraded version of it's mobile OS and discontinues all the previous version of the OS. iPhone 4 is only compatible with iOS 7 I believe so you can't develop for iPhone 4 anymore. you get it?
well apple is releasing iOS 9 so I think 4s is irrelevant now
In iOS 10 the iPhone 4s is not supported anymore.
You will also lose some iPods and the original iPad.

I'm using Xcode 5.1.1 on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.8.5. I've built an iPhone app (my first) using the iOS 7 SDK. Things are very stable, and the app is, I believe, ready for TestFlight.
Now I'm assailed by Xcode 6 and iOS 8. I want to go forward, but am kind of spooked that switching Xcode at this point may run the risk of breaking things. A lot of the reviews I read are negative, but I expect people who have problems are more likely to bellyache than those for whom things go smoothly. OTOH, I read that TestFlight is well-integrated into Xcode 6.
I recognize that answers to this question may be opinion-based, but I haven't found anything specific offering guidance for my particular circumstance.
Should I take the chance and upgrade Xcode and the app, or wait until I've launched, then upgrade and work iOS 8 support into an update?
Afterthought
I just checked and the upgrade to Xcode 6 requires an OSX upgrade to 10.9.3, which adds another layer of terror. :-O

Ok, I steeled myself and went forward with the upgrade--Mavericks and Xcode 6. First thing I noticed is that my keyboard isn't appearing in my user input modals. But that's a subject for another post. Other than that, the OS and Xcode seem to be working ok.
Yes! There will be a few adjustments to make, but there always is. The only thing that's caused me extra time so far is Xcode 6 Auto-Layout for iOS 7 devices (e.g. layout margins). But it's not too bad.
Chances are many of your users are already on iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and/or iOS 8. Do you really want to ship to them without optimizing for their devices?
From what I can find out, the IOS 5.1 simulator isn't available on Xcode 5/Mavericks. Am I wrong about that?
The issue is that I'm developing an iPad application, and I want it to run on an iPad 1. I'd love to target IOS 7 and be done with it, but unfortunately the iPad 1 doesn't support anything past IOS 5.1. Is there some way to target IOS 5.1 yet be able to debug/test on Xcode 5/Mavericks?
Surely most apps still support the iPad 1 - there are still a lot of iPad 1's out there. But since the simulator isn't available, it's like Apple isn't letting me upgrade to the latest Xcode and OSX. What do others do? I'm hoping there's some way to do this that is eluding me!
You are correct, the IOS 5.1 simulator isn't available on Xcode 5/Mavericks. However, you can still connect Xcode to a real iPad 1 and develop that way. I bought a used iPad 1 for about $100 specifically for this purpose and it's working fine.
I have this app that I wrote more than 1,5 year ago. It was my first project in iOS, so I was working on wht was given to me - in this case it was Xcode 3.2 and iOS 4.2. Now I want to submit this app to AppStore, but thing is that as of 1st May Apple requires developers to support new iPhone 5 screen resolution and as a result also I have to provide iPhone 5 screens for submitting proces.
Any advice how to solve this situation? Rewriting all classes with screen bounds or throw it away and use Xcode 4.2 or change for iOS 5.0 and develop "same" app under Xcode 4.2? Or maybe another way?
To anitcipate some answers, I cannot upgrade higher than Xcode 4.2, because I'm working on Snow Leopard and what's more painful I don't have iPhone 5 itself, so I'm not even able to test it myself.
You can not, you will need the iOS 6 SDK to support the 4" iOS device.
Update to either Lion or Mountain Lion and then download the latest SDK and make sure that you autoresize masks are set correctly and your app will work on 3,5" and 4" device.
Unfortunately, you will have to update to a newer version of XCode, which will require an update of your OS to either Lion or Mountain Lion. I tried doing this recently with an older Macbook that I had, and it became more of a headache to get it to work with the older software than switching to a new SDK.
Everything should be a relatively easy update.
Seems like every time i go thru a required update of either the mac OS or the device iOS, i always end up getting very frustrated to the point of giving up on the iphone/ipad development altogether.
I just recently bought an ipad2 (iOS 5.1.1). And i noticed that my old Xcode 4 didnt support this iOS version. So now I just upgraded to XCode 4.2. But now I am still required to downgrade the iPad2 iOS to 5.0 (unfortunately). Now if I wanted to develop for iOS 5.1, then I must upgrade to XCode 4.3.2, which means I also need to upgrade my OS to Lion (i currently have Snow Leopard).
I believe these are the prerequisites that i was able to straighten out. Please correct me if Im wrong.
Finally, if my assessment here is correct, then I do need to download the iOS 5.0 firmware. I am unable to find a link to this anywhere on apple's site (everything is for 5.1). Anybody know where i can get the download link for older iOS's ?
Thanks!
When you go to your Xcode organizer, could you connect your iPad and select "Use For development" button that appears with your device in the organizer?
If the answer is "yes", then you can develop for iOS 4 and just do your testing on your iPad running OS 5.1.1.
If the answer is "no", then you should update your Macintosh to Lion and your Xcode to 4.3.X (which will include the iOS 5.0 & 5.1 SDK).
If you want to "downgrade" your iPad to iOS 5.0 (and good luck with that), you can find a download link in this article.
But don't stress too much. Once you get accustomed to development, you can hopefully keep up with the times (and the frequent OS & Xcode updates) pretty easily.
