I'm looking for a way to interact with USSD menus through the dial string itself.
e.g. the dial string activates the USSD menu from the carrier and automatically enters in the menu option and submits it to the USSD application.
Is this possible?
Maybe a bit late but I have just signed up to answer your question. So, our operator has ussd menu that opens up when you dial *100#, and then you have options for checking your account amount, pay parking, send money to prepaid number, etc. which are organised like
Check account
Send money
Parking
So instead of doing *100#, then calling, then replying 1, then calling again, to enter option number 1, I can dial directly using:
*100*1#
Which puts me directly inside "Check account" menu. If you have more options, you can go deeper directly by
*100*1*2*1*3#
Which is equivalent of entering the menu and then options 1, then suboption 2, then suboption 1 under it, then finally suboption 3. I use this all the time.

So I use Twilio to send out SMS messages when someone registers a certain form. It sends the first message out but I want to know if it's possible to redirect the message to my actual phone number. For example, the Twilio number sends out the mass text and I want to be able to get any replies to that Twilio number redirected to my real phone number. Is that possible?
I have tried to look at other people's things and have yet to find anyone who has asked my question and I have no idea where to go from here.

You can do that with Twilio Studio! More details here, but in short:
Access the Studio Dashboard in your Studio Console.
Make a new Studio flow by clicking the + sign.
Pick a name for your flow and click "next".
"
Click "Start from scratch" followed by Next".
From the "Widget Library" on the right, drag and drop a "Send Message" widget into the flow.
Click and drag the "Trigger" widget’s "Incoming Message" lead to connect it to the "Send Message" widget.
Click the "Send Message" widget to show the widget's options on the right. Type in the MESSAGE BODY field:
Under the SEND MESSAGE widget options, scroll down to click to expand MESSAGING & CHAT CONFIG. Type in the desired destination (number to forward to with E.164 formatting) in the SEND MESSAGE TO field, and then click Save.
Select "Publish".
To activate the Studio flow:
Visit the Active Numbers page in your Console.
Select the phone number you want to edit.
Scroll to the Voice & Fax section to modify the phone number’s routing like so:
Select "Save".
Let me know if this helps! <3 :D
I am using Twilio Studio and I have a flow where I ask user A if he wants to call with user B.
In case user A clicks 1 (yes), I want to create a conference and put user A inside this conference.
In case user A clicks 3 (no) he just continues in my Studio Flow.
In the case user A clicks 1 (yes), then I proceed to call user B with the "Make Outgoing Call" widget and ask him if he wants to call with user A.
In case user B clicks 1 (yes), I want to place him in the conference where user A is waiting.
In case user B clicks 3 (no), I want him to continue with the flow, and I want to move user A out of the conference and let him continue with the flow.
I am currently using an "HTTP Request" widget to send a request to my server which updates the user's call flow to a conference. The obvious problem with this is that in case user B says no, he will not return to Twilio Studio.
The possible solutions I have in mind are:
Create an empty conference call before putting user A in it. And use the conference_sid in the "Connect Call To" widget for user A (and send it to B afterwards). My problem here is that I'm unsure whether an empty conference can be created.
In case an empty conference cannot be made, do step 1 but put myself in the conference. Problem: I don't think it's possible to have to TO & FROM number the same.
Use solution as mentioned in nr.2 but buy a second phone number that's only purpose is to return conferences with himself included. (need to make sure that if user A or B leaves, the conference shuts down). Call this second nbr with the first one.
I'm not sure if the first or second suggestion is even possible. And if not, is the 3rd a viable option, are there (better) alternatives for cost and/or simplicity?
I have been using trail account. I have made a application to make a call and say Birthday greetings. I can able to make a call to the registered phone number and the message is speaking when i press a button. I need to receive the message without pressing any button. is there any option to do this? Kindly share if we can do that.
Is there any feature that makes straightforward call without prompting the caller to press any keys in dial pad ?
Thank you in advance.
Twilio developer evangelist here.
The message prompt to get the recipient to press a key is a feature of our trial account. The way to remove that message is to upgrade your Twilio account by adding a credit card or PayPal account and adding some funds.
Once you have done that, the message will go away and your call recipient will only hear the birthday greetings.
In March I opened a website that provides people with temporary numbers to be used to receive SMS verifications etc.
I've just logged in to the account and realised that I've received a ton of charges for outbound SMS.
They appear to be a default automated response whenever any of my numbers receives a SMS.
I didn't enable this (seems as though it's some sort of money making thing on their side). How do I disable it?
Go to your project, open https://www.twilio.com/console/phone-numbers/incoming and select the number. In Messaging in A MESSAGE COMES IN select TwiML and click Plus button. Give it some name and paste
<?xml version='1.0' ?>
<Response></Response>
there. Save
Twilio evangelist here.
When you buy a Twilio phone number it comes configured with a default Message Request URL that uses the TwiML <Sms> verb to send a reply back to any incoming text message.
<Response>
<Sms>Thanks for the message. Configure your number's SMS URL to change this message.Reply HELP for help.Reply STOP to unsubscribe.Msg&Data rates may apply.</Sms>
</Response>
If you want to prevent those replies you can change this default behavior by providing your own Message Request URL or by using our integrated TwiMLBin feature and returning an empty TwiML response to Twilio:
<Response />
Here is an article from our FAQ that has more info:

Hope that helps.
(2021 Update)
Few things were updated in Twilio / mainly their Admin Dashboard GUI but I'll try to simplify it for anyone reading this still. Trust me when I say I completely understand the frustration of the lack of simplicity when it comes to how they operate. The phrase "Work Smarter, Not Harder" doesn't exist in that company (lol):
Log into your Admin Dashboard Account: https://www.twilio.com/login
Go to your Active Phone Numbers: https://console.twilio.com/?frameUrl=/console/phone-numbers/
If that URL changes, add Active Phone Numbers to your Develop dashboard first VIA
🔴 Develop Tab -> Explore Products -> CTRL + F "Phone
Numbers" -> Click the Pin Button
Then access your Active Phone Numbers VIA
🔴 Develop Tab -> Phone Numbers -> Manage -> Active Numbers -> Click Active (###) ###-####
🔴 Scroll down to Messaging -> Select Webhooks, TwiML Bins, Functions, Studio, or Proxy is selected for Configure With Other Handlers -> Select Function for When a Message Comes In -> Select Default for Service -> then leave the Function Path empty.
I am building a ruby on rails project. it is a portal. I have a situation as follows:
the user browses around. Suddenly he gets a doubt.
I want to keep a small text box and a button that says "call me".
To clarify the doubt the user can enter his phone number in the "call me" box.
now the back office personnel should get an alert or a notification about this.
I tried implementing juggernaut, but became a nightmare since the site is in a shared host and i couldn't configure the port.
a. An ugly solution, with pooling:
Why not make a page that autorefreshes every 1 sec (for the backoffice staff) that just pools the table with customer requests for new data? So, one controller that stores that phone request (the telefone number, etc) and one admin controller that displays unread phone requests from the DB.
It is simple to implement, does not consume too many resources.
b. if you really want something that should 'ring', you can integrate a SMS gateway and send a message to a backoffice phone number.
SO thread about SMS GW
Why not just sending an email to the backoffice?
