This answer shows the SQL solution, but I'm not sure about the Rails way.
Since ordering is normally done on DB level, just use the SQL solution in rails:
- book.prices.order("`currency_code` = 'GBP' desc, currency_code").each do |price|
you can use sql snippets in Rails (ActiveRecord) query methods.
Depending on your DB you might have to choose the right SQL solutiuon, so probably
- book.prices.order("CASE WHEN currency_code = 'GBP' THEN 1 ELSE 2 END, currency_code").each do |price|
works in your case.
You can check the resulting sql in rails console:
book.prices.order("CASE WHEN currency_code = 'GBP' THEN 1 ELSE 2 END, currency_code").to_sql
and check, whether it works in you DB.
An other way is of cause to add an extra column for sorting, this way you can even position commonwelth currencies in front of others etc.

I do the following so I am able to group all LineItem's together by count and display the LineItem by count along with the vendor_name

You can't select the rest of the columns since you have different values for each coulmn inside the group (like... if you have 2 LineItem in the same group, which ID do you expect to have?)
You could apply aggregate functions (like COUNT, MAX, MIN, etc) to other columns on the SELECT to tell the database which columns you want for each column I guess.
Personally, I would first get the groups ordered by count and then do more queries when needed to fetch the actual record for the groups.
counts = LineItem.group(:vendor_name).count
# counts should be something like: {vendor_1: X, vendor_2, Y, vendor_3: Z}
# order the vendors using the count for each vendor
ordered_vendors = counts.keys.sort_by { |ven| counts[ven] }
ordered_vendors.each do |vendor|
# do something with each vendor, fetch LineItems, etc
end
The reason why you only see the count and the vendor name is because that is all you are grouping by. Suppose in the database, you have 5 different Vendor A shown below.
vendor_name | product_name
-----------------------------
Vendor A | test
Vendor A | test2
Vendor A | test3
Vendor A | test4
Vendor A | test5
...
When you run your query, SQL will not know what to display for product_name as the group_by will only show 1 row instead of 5. Have a read about it here.
To achieve this you will need to either to group by the other columns too or use a min/max select to pick a value to display. Here is an example:
vendor_line_items = LineItem.select('COUNT(*) AS count', 'vendor_name', 'MAX(product_name)').group(:vendor_name).order('count DESC')
Now each of those results, you can call the attributes method.
Which will give you the following hash:
vendor_line_items.each do |x|

I did:
vendor_line_items = Vendor.joins(:line_items).group(:id).order('COUNT(line_items.id) DESC')
This gives me what I want by ordering the results by vendor.line_items.count and allowing me to get all of the associations to display any param I want.
I assume this way is much slower than what I was previously doing as it fetches all records and then on the front end goes through associations to get more records.
In the original way I was doing this. It is what I want minus an extra parameter that I would want the SUM of. The parameter is a decimal attribute. In the same way I count the LineItem that have the same vendor_name, I want to sum of the LineItem.attribute that share the same vendor_name.

I am quite confused about your code and your expectation. You are selecting the COUNT but the expected result is id instead of count?
If you want to group by vendor_name and show the count of group_by you can try
line_items.group(:vendor_name).count

Assuming you have a model with a date field(eg. published_at) and 2 integer fields(eg. fee, discount). You can use "group" method to run GROUP BY on published_at. Then just use sum method if you want only sum of one fields. If you want more than one field, you have to run a select with SQL SUMs inside, to get multiple column sums. Here is an example.
Charge..group(published_at)
.select("published_at, SUM(fee) AS sum_fee, SUM(discount) AS sum_discount")
.order("published_at")
Note: Summarized fields won't show up in rails console return value prompt. But they are there for you to use.
Depending upon what end result you want, you may want to look at .group(:attribute) rather than .group_by:
Charge.group(:date).each do |charge|
charge.where('date = ?', charge.date).sum(:fee)
charge.where('date = ?', charge.date).sum(:discount)

I found this approach easier, especially if setting multiple conditions on the data you want to extract from the table.
In any case, I had an accounting model that presented this kind of issue where I needed credit and debit plus type of payment info on a single table and spent a fruitful few hours learning all about group_by before realizing that .group() offered a simple solution.
I'm calculating total "walk time" for dog walking app. The Walks table has two cols, start_time and end_time. Since I want to display total time out for ALL walks for a particular dog, I should just be able to sum the two columns, subtract end_times_total from start_time_totals and result will be my total time out. However I'm getting strange results. When I sum the columns thusly,
start_times = dog.walks.sum('start_time')
end_times = dog.walks.sum('end_time')
BOTH start_times and end_times return the same value. Doing a sanity check I see that my start and end times in the db are indeed set as I would expect them to be (start times in the morning, end times in the afternoon), so the sum should definitely return a different value for each of the columns. Additionally, the value is different for each dog and in line with the relative values I would expect, so dogs with more walks return larger values than dogs with fewer walks. So, it looks like the sum is probably working, only somehow returning the same value for each column.
Btw, running this in dev Rails 3.2.3, ruby 2.0, SQLite.
Don't think that summing datetimes is a good idea. What you need is calculate duration of each single walk and sum them. You can do it in 2 ways:
1. DB-dependent, but more efficient:
# sqlite in dev and test modes
sql = "strftime('%s',end_time) - strftime('%s',start_time)" if !Rails.env.production?
# production with postgres
sql = "extract(epoch from end_time - start_time)" if Rails.env.production?

2. DB-agnostic, but less efficient in case of hundreds record for each dog:

I don't know, how sqlite handles datetime and operations on this data type, but while playing in sqlite console, I noticed that I could get reliable effects when converting datetime to seconds.
I would write it like:
dog.walks.sum("strftime('%s', end_time) - strftime('%s', start_time)")
Query should look like:
select sum(strftime('%s', end_time) - strftime('%s', start_time)) from walks;

The result of this is a collection of Model objects. Not plain ratings. And from uniq's point of view, they are completely different. You can use this:

Apparently, as of rails 5.0.0.1, it works only on "top level" queries, like above. Doesn't work on collection proxies ("has_many" relations, for example).
Address.distinct.pluck(:city) # => ['Moscow']
user.addresses.distinct.pluck(:city) # => ['Moscow', 'Moscow', 'Moscow']
In this case, deduplicate after the query
user.addresses.pluck(:city).uniq # => ['Moscow']
If you're going to use Model.select, then you might as well just use DISTINCT, as it will return only the unique values. This is better because it means it returns less rows and should be slightly faster than returning a number of rows and then telling Rails to pick the unique values.
Model.select('DISTINCT rating')
Of course, this is provided your database understands the DISTINCT keyword, and most should.
This works too.

is returning array of object and you have written query
Model.select(:rating).uniq
uniq is applied on array of object and each object have unique id. uniq is performing its job correctly because each object in array is uniq.
There are many way to select distinct rating :
Model.select('distinct rating').map(&:rating)
or
Model.select('distinct rating').collect(&:rating)
or
Model.select(:rating).map(&:rating).uniq
or
Model.select(:name).collect(&:rating).uniq
One more thing, first and second query : find distinct data by SQL query.
These queries will considered "london" and "london " same means it will neglect to space, that's why it will select 'london' one time in your query result.
Third and forth query:
find data by SQL query and for distinct data applied ruby uniq mehtod.
these queries will considered "london" and "london " different, that's why it will select 'london' and 'london ' both in your query result.

In my scenario, I wanted a list of distinct names after ordering them by their creation date, applying offset and limit. Basically a combination of ORDER BY, DISTINCT ON

My database has "spine numbers" and I want to sort by them.
#films = Film.all.sort{|a,b| a.id <=> b.id }
That is my one controller, but the spines go 1, 2, 3 ... 100, 101 etc. instead of 001,002,003... so the sorting is out of whack. There's probably an easy class for this something like:
#films = Film.all.sort{|a,b| a.id.abs <=> b.id.abs }

You should use Film.order("id DESC") (or "ASC") method which aplies SQL ORDER BY clause to the query.
By default, records are sorted by the primary key column, at least in MySQL.
If this hasn't answered your question, please provide some more information on your database.

Yes, I do see. The only thing that comes to mind is that you're using some kind of string datatype for the spine numbers column. In this case, this kind of sorting makes sense, because values are compared alpabetically char to char like this

while numeric values such as integer, or float, are compared by their actual value, and not by separate bytes.
So you should create a migration to change the datatype of your spine number to integer.
