I'm attempting to do a clean install of Ruby 2.0.0 on Lion 10.8.3 with Xcode 4.6.1. I have command line tools installed.
gcc reprots version 4.2.1
git, sqlite3, etc. are all installed.
I'm trying to do a clean install. I did the following steps
rvm uninstall all
rvm implode
Then the new install
curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable # to install rvm
rvm requirements
I get the following response from rvm requirements.
For ruby:
Install: osx-gcc-installer libksba openssl libreadline git zlib1g libyaml libsqlite3 sqlite3 libxml2 libxslt autoconf libc6 libgdbm ncurses automake libtool bison pkg-config
What is this telling me to do? How do I install all these packages?
gcc reports version 4.2.1
git, sqlite3, etc. are all installed.
If I attempt install despite it, it eventually fails.
I do iOS development as well and can't afford to disrupt my Xcode environment.
For security reasons, as a general policy I am running under a non-admin userid. My intent in using rvm was to keep the changes local to my userid, yet other tools such as homebrew seem to require at least admin access if not sudo.
Use Homebrew to install stuff like you would with apt-get (or similar PM's) on Linux.

For the plain Ruby part: There is an official GUI Tool to handle RVM for you:

I just installed Ruby 2.0 with 2 clicks. Depending on your XCode, Ruby Versions < 1.9p125 could be more problematic, though.

I've hit the problem of setup of RVM + Rubies on a new Mac laptop where after getting RVM installed plus Homebrew the install for Rails hits the error:

Discoveries & Fault Diagnosis
Starting with a clean laptop I had followed the usual path of installing Homebrew, Xcode command line tools, MySQL (for rails dev), Git and then RVM. Even with the environment variables set and also uninstalling and rebuild of RVM, removing and re-adding OpenSSL within Homebrew, when trying to get Rails installed I'm greeted with the error:
ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::Exception)
Unable to require openssl, install OpenSSL and rebuild ruby (preferred) or use non-HTTPS sources
The other item to note is that when installing RVM I made sure that RVM was aware of Homebrew:
rvm autolibs enable
ram autolibs homebrew
The output from the install of ruby-2.3.3 is below:

Next Steps
Currently I'm stuck - not been able to get past this step or validate through reviewing other postings to get a solution that works.
Well I found a solution to the problem previously described. The following steps outline how it was resolved.
CleanUp
Removed the installation of Homebrew via ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/uninstall)"
Removed the installation of RVM via rvm implode
Rebuild
Install Homebrew using ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"
Do integrity check on Brew using brew upgrade followed by brew doctor
Install RVM (again!) using \curl -sSL https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable
Ensure that RVM knows about homebrew through the autolibs option using rvm autolibs homebrew
Setup the environment variables so that we know where the openssl is installed:
export LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/opt/openssl/lib
export CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/opt/openssl/include
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/opt/openssl/lib/pkgconfig
Install ruby via rvm install 2.3.3 --autolibs=homebrew
Check that it Works
Check that the rvm space knows about the OpenSSL certificates using rvm osx-ssl-certs status all. Running this command produced the following output: Certificates for /usr/local/etc/openssl/cert.pem: Up to date.
Install rails via gem install rails
At the last step the installation succeeded and Rails was working (at last!)
If that doesn't work for another reader -
try this:
rvm get branch /bugfix/3923_set_osx_brew_openssl_compiler_config
rvm install 2.4.0
If that works for you, go to the rvm issue and tell the developer how much you appreciate his effort :)
I have the error below when installing rails on osx maverick. OpenSSL has been installed already. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
$ gem install rails
ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::Exception)
Unable to require openssl, install OpenSSL and rebuild ruby (preferred) or use non-HTTPS sources
You may need to update your OpenSSL CA Bundle, per these instructions from chruby about Ruby 2.1.2 which state:
Install 2.1.2
Note: MRI 2.1.2 requires OpenSSL >= 1.0.1.
wget http://cache.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/2.1/ruby-2.1.2.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf ruby-2.1.2.tar.bz2
cd ruby-2.1.2
./configure --prefix=/opt/rubies/ruby-2.1.2
make
sudo make install
Note: OS X users must update their OpenSSL CA cert bundle and properly set ./configure --with-opt-dir to compile against Homebrew's libraries:
wget http://cache.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/2.1/ruby-2.1.2.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf ruby-2.1.2.tar.bz2
cd ruby-2.1.2
./configure --prefix="$HOME/.rubies/ruby-2.1.2" --with-opt-dir="$(brew --prefix openssl):$(brew --prefix readline):$(brew --prefix libyaml):$(brew --prefix gdbm):$(brew --prefix libffi)"
make
sudo make install
For me, it was enough to just update my OpenSSL CA cert bundle via Homebrew and then reinstall Ruby using ruby-install
brew tap raggi/ale
brew install openssl-osx-ca
ruby-install ruby 2.1.2
After I performed the above steps, the issue stopped presenting itself.
For me... I had tried installing ruby 2.1.2 with ruby-install (since I use chruby for my ruby version manager). I had tried manually installing openssl with homebrew, etc. But I still couldn't get ruby-install to successfully build ruby 2.1.2. I've also had similar issues in the past with installing rubies and ruby-build worked then so I gave I gave it a shot here and it worked! As I understand it, ruby-build is the installer used by rbenv.
What I did was:
rm -rf ~/.rubies/ruby-2.1.2 (This is where my ruby installs are installed at.)
brew remove --force openssl
brew install ruby-build
restart console to be safe
ruby-build 2.1.2 ~/.rubies/ruby-2.1.2
And success! ruby-build seems to be much smarter than ruby-install at successfully installing weird dependencies. I'm done with ruby-install at this point -- it's given me too many problems! (brew remove --force ruby-install)
I've had a similar issue.
A fix to rvm was introduced just yesterday, and it was not yet merged with rvm master branch, so this is how you do it:
rvm get branch /bugfix/3923_set_osx_brew_openssl_compiler_config
rvm install 2.4.0
gem install rails
If that works for you, go to the issue and tell the developer how much you appreciate his effort:
Recently I was struggling with ruby installations due to the recent auto-update in openssl version from 1.0 to 1.1.
I found out that the ruby version < 2.4 does not work with openssl version > 1.0.
I was not even able to revert back the openssl to 1.0 version because other libs has dependencies on it.
No other solution except the one given below worked for me:
brew install rbenv/tap/openssl#1.0
rvm reinstall 1.9.3-p551 --with-openssl-dir='/usr/local/opt/openssl#1.0'
gem update --system
Now my ruby runs with openssl 1.0 whereas all other libraries are running on the default openssl version 1.1.
secure server is the reason of this issue. You can Install it by using this command:
gem install rails --source http://rubygems.org
by default its using https://rubygem.org as the source for the gem.
$ gem install rails ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::Exception) Unable to
require openssl, install OpenSSL and
rebuild ruby (preferred) or use non-HTTPS sources
so we can specify a source, http//:rubygems.org which is a non-HTTPS source.
I am trying to install Ruby on Rails using rvm on ubuntu 12.04. I am following the steps given in https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-ruby-on-rails-on-ubuntu-12-04-lts-precise-pangolin-with-rvm , but I am unable to install Rails successfully. When I run gem install rails, it does nothing.
Previously, by using the above link, I have successfully installed it several times. But this time, i couldn't.
Output of
gem install rails -V:
HEAD https //rubygems.org/specs.4.8.gz 302 Moved Temporarily
HEAD https //s3.amazonaws.com/production.s3.rubygems.org/specs.4.8.gz

302 Moved Temporarily ...
GET https //rubygems.org/quick/Marshal.4.8/rack-1.4.5.gemspec.rz

It always stops at this point. Need some guidance to successfully install it.
Step One — Install Ruby with RVM
Before we do anything else, we should run a quick update to make sure that all of the packages we download to our VPS are up to date:
sudo apt-get update
Once that's done, we can start installin
g RVM, Ruby Version Manager. This is a great program that lets you use several versions of Ruby on one server; however, in this case, we will just use it to install the latest version of Ruby on the droplet.
If you do not have curl on your system, you can start by installing it:
sudo apt-get install curl
To install RVM, open terminal and type in this command:
\curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable
After it is done installing, load RVM. You may first need to exit out of your shell session and start up a new one.
source ~/.rvm/scripts/rvm
In order to work, RVM has some of its own dependancies that need to be installed. To automatically install them:
rvm requirements
You may need to enter your root password to allow the installation of these dependencies.
On occasion the zlib package may be reported as missing. The RVM page describes the issue and the solution in greater detail here.
Step Two — Install Ruby
Once you are using RVM, installing Ruby is easy.
rvm install ruby
The latest ruby is now installed. However, since we accessed it through a program that has a variety of Ruby versions, we need to tell the system to use the version we just installed by default.
rvm use ruby --default
Step Three — Install RubyGems
The next step makes sure that we have all the required components of Ruby on Rails. We can continue to use RVM to install gems; type this line into terminal.
rvm rubygems current
Step Four — Install Rails
Once everything is set up, it is time to install Rails. To start, open terminal and type in:
gem install rails
This process may take a while, be patient with it. Once it finishes you will have Ruby on Rails installed on your droplet.
i did this:
sudo apt-get install git
sudo apt-get install curl
curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --ruby
sudo apt-get install git-core
source ~/.rvm/scripts/rvm
bash -s stable < <(curl -s https://raw.github.com/wayneeseguin/rvm/master/binscripts/rvm-installer)
rvm autolibs enable
rvm reload
rvm requirements
sudo apt-get install build-essential openssl libreadline6 libreadline6-dev curl git-core zlib1g zlib1g-dev libssl-dev libyaml-dev libsqlite3-dev sqlite3 libxml2-dev libxslt-dev autoconf libc6-dev ncurses-dev automake libtool bison subversion
rvm install ruby-2.0
curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --rails
Hope, it helps.
Refer Installing rvm wih stable ruby, use this command
\curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --ruby
After successful installation of ruby, install rails as a gem.
gem install rails
The most basic Vagrant box you can find to get Rails on Ubuntu. (This uses Ubuntu 14, but you can just change the box, should work roughly the same).
https://github.com/joelgerard/rails-vagrant
Also, checkout the bootstrap.sh if you want straight forward BASH.
So very new to rails. I managed to install ruby and then rails framework on Fedora 17.
Here are the summary of steps I did to install ruby and rails framework:
yum install make openssh-clients gcc libxml2 libxml2-devel libxslt libxslt-devel python-devel
sudo bash -s stable < <(curl -sk https://raw.github.com/wayneeseguin/rvm/master/binscripts/rvm-installer)
source /etc/profile.d/rvm.sh
rvm install ruby-1.9.2-p290 --with-openssl
rvm use ruby-1.9.2-p290 --default
rvm all do gem update --system
rvm all do gem install rails
Well.. So far so good.. Just wanted to test if the installation was perfect.
I created a hello world sample (test.rb) to test ruby installation
#!/usr/bin/env ruby
puts "hello World"
and running this with ./test.rb it works fine.
Now when I was test rails framework installation by creating a new project using
rails new demo
I receive the error
Fetching gem metadata from https://rubygems.org/.Unfortunately, a fatal error has occurred. Please see the Bundler
troubleshooting documentation at http://bit.ly/bundler-issues. Thanks!
What am I missing here? Or what have I done additionally which I was not suppose to do?
Looked into https://github.com/carlhuda/bundler/blob/master/ISSUES.md. Could not figure out. Has anyone come across similar issue and found a way to deal with it?
Double check that you have these packages installed...
git-core curl make bzip2 gcc-c++ patch readline readline-devel zlib zlib-devel libyaml-devel libffi-devel libxslt-devel sqlite sqlite-devel openssl openssl-devel
You might want to check out this blog post to see if it helps you at all.
Are you using Xcode 4.1 by any chance? Seems like a lot of people have run into bundler issues after upgrading to Lion (but neglecting to upgrade Xcode as well...).
As in this thread.
is there any way to install Ruby 1.9.2 or 1.8.7 + Rails 3 on my debian squeeze?
You probably don't want to use RVM on a production machine. Its $PATH magic will break in non-obvious places (e.g. cron jobs), and you'll be up a creek.
You could simply build from sources and use checkinstall to create a .deb for yourself. Here's a tutorial for Ubuntu that should translate pretty well into debian.
First install rubygems, I think it's the only Debian package. Then (as Ruby gems):
rvm (install with it ruby 1.9.2, or Ruby version you want)
bundler
rails
And then you can manage application gems with Bundler.
Have you looked at railsready-debian-lenny (it is claimed to work on Squeeze too)? Don't forget to install dependencies pointed in readme.md
The steps below outlines installing Ruby On Rails as a normal user.
Check first if the user has sudo rights. To do this try executing a simple command
$sudo ls -a
[sudo] password for unlimit:
unlimit is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
If you see a message like above, you will need to add the user to the sudoer file, this can be done by
$echo 'unlimit ALL=(ALL) ALL' >> /etc/sudoers
Check if you have ruby installed. Execute the command below
$ruby -v
-[bash]: ruby:command not found
If you see something like this, this means ruby is not installed. Install it
$sudo apt-get install ruby
Install additional libraries
$sudo apt-get install build-essential
$sudo apt-get install curl
$sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
Install rvm
$curl -L get.rvm.io | bash -s stable
Set the rvm path
$source $HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm
You should add this to the .bashrc file.
Fetch the latest rvm and reload it
$rvm get head && rvm reload
Install ruby 1.9.3
$rvm install 1.9.3 --with-openssl-dir=$HOME/.rvm.usr
I needed to install the readline lib
$sudo apt-get install libreadline-dev
Get the rails gem
$gem install rails -v 3.2.3
Check if you have rails
$rails -v
Rails 3.2.3
Get the readline package
$rvm pkg install readline
Get sqlite3
$sudo apt-get install sqlite3 libsqlite3-dev
You are all set to create your first rails app
$rails new app HelloWorld
You can find more info http://unlimit.in/installing-ruby-on-rails-on-debian.html
The best way to install Ruby and any Gems you like is with RVM. It will compile the latest version of Ruby for you and give you tools to manage gemsets.
Relying on the distribution's packages is usually a bad idea, because they are typically out-of-date.
