I'm looking to find a way to install an app automatically on an iphone. An example would be:
I have an app called my.app.
It's located on my desktop on my mac.
When I plug in my iphone to my computer it automatically installs my.app on to my iphone.
Is this possible? Any ideas of how I could possible do this or get a workaround?
Or, it needs to prompt the user to install it. The app doesn't need to automatically install; it just needs to automatically prompt the user on the iPhone to ask if they want to install it or not.
Legally, you can't. Apple (and maybe some authorized third party) is in charge to deliver the packages using the App Store.
However, if you don't "care" about the legal part, try jailbreaking the phone.
If you set up your device with apple configurator (you can find it in the Mac app store) as supervised device you can edit it's profile to include all the apps you want. If you update the profile (add, remov, update apps) the device will be updated when you plug it in while apple configurator is running.

I have my .mobileProvision and my cert generated using openssl. I have the .ipa file. I hit iOS Deployment Type = Apple App Store so that others could install it. One of my workers in my group is unable to run it on her iPhone.
I am using Adobe Animate to export it. I have a developer through apple. With Android, it's as simple as typing in the password for the cert and handing the .apk file over. Then telling them to go to their android settings and tap "Allow apps from 3rd party developers"
You have several possibilities :
Use TestFlight to invite users downloading your app before release (the procedure is well explained by Apple here)
Manually install the app on tester's iPhone thanks to Xcode (just Run the app on it)
Use third party services such as Installr which allow you to easily install your app on testers' iPhone (up to 3 device with free version)
I think Deployment Type should be something like Ad-Hoc version and not Apple App Store.
Use adhoc so they can install over wifi and i use test fairy instead of testflight.
U still have to get their udid unless u have an enterprise account
As the title states, I have been developing and testing an app for Iphone. I have got it to install to an iphone via it being plugged into the Mac. But, I would like to get the app place it on my webserver then via a website allow someone to download and install the app. I tried following various tutorials, but as shown below after archiving the app, the export and other buttons are greyed out. Have also made sure 'Generic iOS devices' selected. What could be causing this ?
You have to use Apple TestFlight or use a third party service to allow your beta to be distributed for testing. One good service is HockeyApp, which I am using currently and it is very cheap $10/month.
Without having the UDID of your client, you simply can't!
What is causing this may be that you are not enrolled in the correct Apple developer program.
A stock iOS device will only install an app from a link on a website if the app is signed by certificate from an Enterprise Developer program enrollment (or Ad Hoc provisioned). The Enterprise distribution method is only allowed to employees of the enrolled corporation.
Ad Hoc deployment to devices registered to your enrolled Developer account is also supported by stock iOS devices.
One other possibility is to put a link to your entire Xcode project on your website, with instructions on how anyone with a Mac and Xcode can build your app and then run it on on their device.

No, Your options are either AppStore or Enterprise account. With the enterprise account way having meny restrictions.
The enterprise account will allow you to distributie the app to the register company only, if you do distribute the app to non employees of the company Apple will close down you account.
You could look at jailbreaking, but you won't reach as many user as you will when distributing your app via the AppStore.
Because of the closed nature of the distribution of apps within iOS, you don't have a choice.
The only way to load an application onto a device, without caring what the device ID is, is via the Enterprise programme or App Store. The Enterprise programme is like a controlled, secure, sideloading process (if we want to to have an analogy with Android), but is limited to distribution within an Enterprise only. The App Store means you have to publish the app to Apple, and follow their rules.
To get the app on the device, without using those two methods, you need to create an Ad-Hoc build, but this requires the device ID, as it'll cross-reference it with the provisioning profile provided. If the device ID is not linked with a provisioning profile for the application, the device will not let it run.
The unofficial way to load an app on a device without needing it's device ID is via a jailbroken device, but that's unreliable and requires the user to be tech savvy.

You have to register his UDID in apple developer portal. Then you can install your app on his phone from Xcode.
You can distribute your application using standard developer account certificate ($99), but it is limited to 100 devices.

I programmed an app for a company and would like to install the app on their iPads without having to submit the app to the App Store since its a commercial app for just this company. Is this possible without connecting each iPad to my MacBook and putting a developer certificate on it.
Is there another way? What about using an URL-link or QR-Code (linking to this url)?

Your question is about installing apps without iTunes and the Apple App Store. This is entirely possible and supported by Apple but you are still bound by your developer account's ability to only build signed binaries for 100 devices for testing purposes only.
You can distribute your apps over the air via services like hockeyapp.net and testflightapp.com (free) but these services are just hooking into the iOS system's ability to install signed binaries over the air which has been possible since iOS4. There are several open source projects that provide the bare bones HTML and Javascript/meta tags to install signed binaries over the net - one such one is iOS Beta Builder
If you are creating Enterprise apps for clients (that will exist in production, not just a development environment) then your only legitimate way to provide your clients with apps that won't expire is to use Enterprise Developer Account. The enterprise account has no device limits but the apps you sign with enterprise certs phone home to Apple each time they're launched and are strictly only allowed to be used for a single company and their current employees.
