I have been having trouble deploying liferay portlets and themes from the command line with ant deploy;
sample execution:

the problem appears to be with the bold section and how the path is obviously incorrect; where is this directory being set?

the problem was my app.server.dir in build.{username}.properties
The error is a result of the ant build not being able to find a Liferay installation (which contains items needed by the SDK).
By default, the build properties in the SDK are set up on the assumption that your setup looks like this:
- Your Development Directory
- bundles
- data
- deploy
- license
- tomcat-6.0.29
- liferay-plugins-sdk
Where bundles contains a Liferay bundle distribution, including the bundled Tomcat server.
You can see this setup in the build.properties file at the root level of your SDK.

The recommended way to change this is not to edit this section of build.properties, but to create overriding entries in a new file, called build.username.properties. (where username is your user name on your computer account).
As you say in the comment to kirkz's answer, you have already set your build.connor.properties: You obviously have used backslash in there. Here \t is short for the tab character. This explains what you see: ...liferay-portal-6.0.6 omcat... (there's a tab between 6.0.6 and omcat)
Do only use forward-slash in properties files (when you refer to file names, no matter if you're on windows or on any other platforms)
I think to solve this issue just for now. To check weather you are getting unsuccessful build or not you can try this solution:
I have just used the static liferay path in this solution.

It would help to know more about what you're trying to run but this question came up as a result of troubleshooting an issue I was having so here's how I resolved it. I am using Windows so if you're using something else it may not work for you.

I had to install Ant first since it was not installed.

You will change the "real executable" to be the executable you are wanting to run.

I didn't make any edits to the contents, just pasted it right in and saved it as antRunAsync.js
So now you take your Ant example script I posted above and throw that in a text editor, save as build.xml
From this point you should be able to test on the command line by typing ant and pressing enter. Your application should load in a different window.
If you haven't set up Ant in the Jenkins Global Tool Configuration do so now and point it to your Ant install (might have to uncheck the Install checkbox). In the Jenkins project add a build step Invoke Ant. Set that up how you like according to Ant documentation.

In one of our build script, we have following simple copy task added ->

This copy task started hanging when the glassfish jar name got changed (version upgrade which are not in our control) at the source location. I was expecting it to error out causing the build failure in that case. Actually at first I was not able to figure out at what particular step build was hanging. Then when I added "-debug" to the ant command and I realized its successfully completing a step prior to this copy task and still there was no trace of copy command that is hung. When I updated the new jar name, it worked fine and build was successful which proved that the copy task is hanging because of filename got changed. To make it easy to debug next time, I added an echo statement like below just prior to that copy task ->
<echo message="Copying glassfish jar to ${targetdir}.."/>
But I am still confused as to why it didn't give error with build failure? I am using Apache Ant version 1.7.1. Could this be a bug? How else I can avoid this situation in future with just the copy task (without using * in the jar name)? TIA
That worked for me. Well, didn't work for me. I got the error message. I am using Ant 1.8 and Ant 1.9.2. I didn't try it with Ant 1.7, but I doubt it's a bug.
Try to use the -v parameter in Ant:
$ ant -v target
And be prepared for a longwinded output. This will give you information what's going on with Ant, and may explain why it's freezing. There's a few things you could do: Use a fileset to specify the file.

If this simple build file works, it's very possible that something else in your main build file is causing the bug.
I am trying to migrate an Ant script I wrote to build and deploy projects from within the Jenkins framework (instead of triggered from an SVN post-commit hook, which was the expedient way we initially approached things). Everything is great, except I need to stage files for the deploy step and I want to stuff them into the 'build' directory Jenkins creates for the job (and since my build.xml lives in a non-project-specific location, ${basedir} and ${user.dir} do not point to the desired location).
within the Jenkins configuration, I've setup the following:

when running a build, the script is appropriately launched and a job-specific build directory is created, e.g.

according to the documentation, there are no specific environment variables that are set to the full build directory path -- I can fudge it by hardcoding the E:\builds root and tacking on ${env.build_id}, but was hoping there would be an easier way to access the complete path from something Jenkins exposes (either an Ant property and an environment variable) in order to make the script more flexible.
I am using Jenkins version 1.476.

It's always a good idea for your project to have a copy of it's build logic included alongside the source code. It makes your build more portable across machines.
Having said that it's also quite common to setup build files containing common shared build logic. ANT defines the following tasks to support such activity:
include
import
So a possible solution is to store a simple build.xml file, in the root of your project directory:

<target name="build" depends="common.build"/>

Notes:
It's a good idea to use a revision number in the common build file name. This assists in preserving backward compatibility with other builds using the older logic.

I am trying to run an Ant task from within IBM RSA IDE using Ant build ...
I get the following error message:

This is common and has a number of causes; the usual
solutions are to read the manual pages then download and
install needed JAR files, or fix the build file:
- You have misspelt 'getProjectData'.
Fix: check your spelling.
- The task needs an external JAR file to execute
and this is not found at the right place in the classpath.
Fix: check the documentation for dependencies.
Fix: declare the task.
- The task is an Ant optional task and the JAR file and/or libraries
implementing the functionality were not found at the time you

I believe getProjectData is an IBM extension to ant. Like you, I had a similar error, but I was able to get it working after ensuring the Run in the same JRE as the workspace option was enabled (which you can find by right-clicking the build file, run-as, Ant Build..., and selecting the option on the JRE tab).
I discovered the solution on the IBM info center:
The Run in the same JRE as the workspace option enables the classpath
of the workbench to access the additional Ant tasks that perform
operations that are specific to the workbench, such as projectImport,
projectBuild, workspaceBuild, ejbDeploy, or earExport. If your Ant
build script uses any Ant tasks that perform workbench operations,
verify that you selected the Run in the same JRE as the workspace
option; otherwise you might get the following error message in the
Console view:

I'm in the process of modifying an Ant script (currently in use from within MyEclipse) to work from the command line. I'm doing this so anyone can check out the project and build it without MyEclipse. The problem I'm running into is that MyEclipse includes the dependencies behind the scenes. It does this by looking at the workspace's Ant configuration and compiling the classpath based on the selected libraries in the preferences dialog. Long story short, I need to take those dependencies and make the script smart enough to include them on its own, without the help of MyEclipse.
The tasks that are giving me a headache are the sshexec and scp tasks. They are optional ant tasks that require a version of jsch to run. I removed jsch from MyEclipse's Ant classpath and added it to a lib folder in the project itself (lib/dev). MyEclipse immediately complained that the SSHExec class could not find the dependent class, com.jcraft.jsch.UserInfo which is part of jsch-0.1.44.jar.
I don't see a way to set the classpath for Ant from within the build script. I have the following code, which adds a path element to the script, but I don't think Ant uses this unless explicitly associated to a task or another element.

It seems that I need to use taskdef to define the sshexec and scp tasks:

MyEclipse complains about this, "taskdef A class needed by class org.apache.tools.ant.taskdefs.optional.ssh.SSHExec cannot be found: com/jcraft/jsch/UserInfo"
It's clearly in the classpathref, web-jars. And I can't run anything in the script because of this malformed or misconfigured taskdef.
The problem here is that the SSHExec class is loaded from a classloader which itself has no access to your web-jars class loader. Supplying this classpath for the taskdef does not change this. Each class can only load classes from its own classloader and any parent class loaders, but the web-jars classloader is not a parent class loader of SSHExec's class loader (it is likely the other way around, since SSHExec seems to be found here).
It looks like this:

The VM has no idea to look for UserInfo (and the other JSch classes) in the web-jars classloader.
I suppose the SSHExec task is somewhere in the usual ant classpath, i.e. loaded by the application class loader. Then removing SSHExec from ant's classpath (or adding jsch.jar to it) seems to be the only solution here.
Create ~/.ant/lib and copy jsch.jar in there as part of the build initialisation. Any tasks which do scp/sshexec work should depend on this init target.

The Ant within Eclipse unfortunately won't pick this up immediately as it does not read ~/.ant/lib on every execution; After running mytarget within Eclipse once and watching it fail, then go to:
Window>Preferences>Ant>Runtime and press Restore Defaults - this will add any .jar files from ~/.ant/lib to the Global Entries section and you should be good to go.
