Start program and dock with an existing program Delphi 2010 - delphi

Is there a way in Delphi 2010 to start an application using ShellExecute then dock that application inside another?
I.e. Program A written in Delphi contains 1 form. When the form is shown, Program B, written in C# is started up and docked client into Program A's form?

Yes you can do this. You need to get hold of the window handle of the main form in the other process (call EnumWindows). Then call SetParent to make that window a child of your window.
You'll likely want to modify window style, position etc. Also call WaitForInputIdle before trying to find a window handle in the new process. You've got to give the new process a chance to get started.
What you now have is a pretty queer beast. Inside one container you have two processes. Each process has its own UI thread. You can show and interact with two modal dialogs at once. There's really no end to the fun you can have with this!

Just for a bit of fun I had a go at writing a simple Delphi app to do this. It's rather brittle and only seems to work for very basic apps. I think you could spend a long time trying to make this work well and still end up with an unsatisfactory result. If I were you I'd look for other solutions, especially as you have the source for this C# app. Surely you could expose its functionality as an ActiveX?

I need a solution that works irrespective of the language, but any program that is loaded in this way will be one that we write

I then want to get dockapp2 to dock inside of dockapp1 and for the user to have no idea that this is a seperate program.

Launch HTML Help as Separate Process

I am using XE7 64 and I am looking for a strategy to solve several problems I am having when displaying HTMLHelp files from within my applications (I have added the HTMLHelpViewer to my uses clause). The issues are the following: 1) Ctrl-c does not copy text from topics; 2) The helpviewer cannot be accessed when a modal dialog is active.
The source of the problems are presumably attributable to the htmlhelpviewer running in the same process as the application. Is there a way to have the built-in htmlhelpviewer launch a new process? If not, then will I need to launch HH.EXE with Createprocess?
You could launch the help file viewer as a separate process, but I think that will make controlling it even more complex. My guess is that the supplied HTML help viewer code is the root cause of your problems. I've always found that code to be extremely low quality.
I deal with that by implementing an OnHelp event handler that I attach to the Application object. This event handler calls the HtmlHelp API directly. I certainly don't experience any of the problems that you describe.

Include that unit in your project and you will be hooked up to handle help context requests. Some comments on the code:
The implementation of the OnHelp event handler is limited to just my needs. Should you need more functionality you'd have to add it yourself.
You won't have TFormLayoutPrefernce. It's one of my preference classes that manages per-user preferences. It stores away the window's bounds rectangle, and whether or not the window was maximised. This is used to ensure that the help window is shown at the same location as it was shown in the previous session. If you don't want such functionality, strip it away.
ReportError and ReportErrorFmt are my helper functions to show error dialogs. You can replace those with calls to MessageBox or similar.
Based on David's comments that he calls HtmlHelp directly and does not encounter the problems noted above, I tried that approach and it solved the problems. Example of calling HTMLHelp directly to open a topic by id:

Call an external command in service [duplicate]

I've made a service with Delphi. Every time I call another application in that service the application is not running. What is wrong?
BTW I have used shellexecute, shellopen or calling it with cmd. None of these methods work.

Put simply: how can I call another application from my service?
ShellExecute/Ex() and CreateProcess() run the specified file/app in the same session as the calling process. A service always runs in session 0.
In XP and earlier, the first user to log in also runs in session 0, so a service can run an interactive process and have it viewable to that interactive user, but only if the service is marked as interactive (the TService.Interactive property is true). If multiple users are logged in, they run in session 1+, and thus cannot see interactive processes run by services.
Windows Vista introduced a new feature called "Session 0 Isolation". Interactive users no longer run in session 0 at all, they always run in session 1+ instead, and session 0 is not interactive at all (the TService.Interactive property no longer has any effect). However, to help with migration of legacy services, if a service runs an interactive process that tries to display a GUI on session 0, Windows prompts the current logged in user, if any, to switch to a separate desktop that temporarily makes the GUI viewable. In Windows 7 onwards, that legacy support is now gone.
In all versions on Windows from 2000 onwards, the correct way to run an interactive process from a service and have it be viewable to an interactive user is to use CreateProcessAsUser() to run the new process in the specified user's session and desktop. There are plenty of detailed examples available on MSDN, StackOverflow, and throughout the Web, so I'm not going to reiterate them here.
Services run in a different session from the interactive user. Services run in session 0. Session 0 processes do not have access to the interactive desktop. Which means that any attempt to show an interactive process in session 0 is doomed to fail. You are attempting to create a Notepad process which is interactive.
There are ways to launch a process on an interactive desktop from a session: Launching an interactive process from Windows Service in Windows Vista and later. As you will understand after reading that article, what you are attempting to do is non-trivial.
This solution is intended to be used from within a service, I thought I'd paste this code here as it was how I got my service to run an application as the currently logged in user.

Put simply: how can I call another application from my service?
ShellExecute/Ex() and CreateProcess() run the specified file/app in the same session as the calling process. A service always runs in session 0.
In XP and earlier, the first user to log in also runs in session 0, so a service can run an interactive process and have it viewable to that interactive user, but only if the service is marked as interactive (the TService.Interactive property is true). If multiple users are logged in, they run in session 1+, and thus cannot see interactive processes run by services.
Windows Vista introduced a new feature called "Session 0 Isolation". Interactive users no longer run in session 0 at all, they always run in session 1+ instead, and session 0 is not interactive at all (the TService.Interactive property no longer has any effect). However, to help with migration of legacy services, if a service runs an interactive process that tries to display a GUI on session 0, Windows prompts the current logged in user, if any, to switch to a separate desktop that temporarily makes the GUI viewable. In Windows 7 onwards, that legacy support is now gone.
In all versions on Windows from 2000 onwards, the correct way to run an interactive process from a service and have it be viewable to an interactive user is to use CreateProcessAsUser() to run the new process in the specified user's session and desktop. There are plenty of detailed examples available on MSDN, StackOverflow, and throughout the Web, so I'm not going to reiterate them here.
Services run in a different session from the interactive user. Services run in session 0. Session 0 processes do not have access to the interactive desktop. Which means that any attempt to show an interactive process in session 0 is doomed to fail. You are attempting to create a Notepad process which is interactive.
There are ways to launch a process on an interactive desktop from a session: Launching an interactive process from Windows Service in Windows Vista and later. As you will understand after reading that article, what you are attempting to do is non-trivial.
This solution is intended to be used from within a service, I thought I'd paste this code here as it was how I got my service to run an application as the currently logged in user.

Delphi: Detect when a new form has been created

I'd like to detect when a new form has been created.
Now I use the Screen.ActiveFormChange event and check for new forms in Screen.CustomForms but ActiveFormChange is fired after the OnShow event of the form.
I'd like to detect the form even before OnShow was fired. Is there any way to do this without modifying the Vcl.Forms unit?
I'd like to detect all forms (also Delphi modal messages etc.) therefore inheriting all forms from a custom class is not possible (correct me if I am wrong).
Alternatively, is it possible to detect that a new component was added to some TComponent.FComponents list?
You can use the SetWindowsHookEx function to install a WH_CBT Hook, then you must implement a CBTProc callback function and finally intercept one of the possible code values for this hook. in this case you can try with HCBT_ACTIVATE or HCBT_CREATEWND.

Native dialogs managed and shown by Windows (TOpenDialog, TFontDialog, etc...) are created apart from the VCL and to track them also, you need a hacking unit. Try this one then.

Fade all other windows of an application when a dialog is shown?

How to dim / fade all other windows of an application in Delphi 2009.
Form has an AlphaBlend property, but it controls only transparency level. But it would be nice if we can have something like this
(Concentrated window) . Even stackoverflow.com does that, when we try to insert a link/ image etc in the post.
How can we achieve this in a delphi application?
Here is a unit I just knocked together for you.
To use this unit drop a TApplication component on your main form and in the OnModalBegin call _GrayForms and then in the OnModalEnd call the _NormalForms method.
This is a very simple example and could be made to be more complex very easily. Checking for multiple call levels etc....
For things like system (open, save, etc) dialogs you can wrap the dialog execute method in a try...finally block calling the appropriate functions to get a similar reaction.
This unit should work on Win2k, WinXP, Vista and should even work on Win7.

I'm not sure about the "right" way to do it, but in order to "fade-to-white", what you can do is place your form in another completely white form (white background color, no controls).
So when your form is in 0% transparency, it will show as a regular form, but when it's in 50% transparency it will be faded to white. You can obviously choose other colors as your background.
I'm looking forward to seeing other answers...
EDIT: after seeing your "Jedi Concentrate" link, it seems that a dark-gray background will mimic the Expose effect better.
One way to do this is to place another form behind your dialog, this form would have no borders, and would contain a single image. This image would be a capture of the entire desktop from just before the dialog popped up, then run through a transform to lower the luminosity of each pixel by 50%. One trick that works quite well here is to use a black form, and to only include ever other pixel. If you know for certain that you will have theme support, you can optionally use a completely black form and use the alphablend and alphablendvalue properties..this will allow the OS to perform the luminosity transformation for you. An alphablendvalue of 128 is = 50%.

As mghie pointed out, there is the possibility of a user pressing alt-tab to switch to another application. One way to handle this scenario would be to hide the "overlay" window in the application.OnDeactivate event, and to show it on the application.OnActivate event. Just remember to set the zorder of the overlay window lower than your modal dialog.
I created a similar effect to the Jedi Concentrate with a Form sized to the Screen.WorkArea with Color := clBlack and BorderStyle := bsNone
I found setting the AlphaBlendValue was too slow to animate nicely, so I use SetLayeredWindowAttributes()
