i get the message as seen in the title if i try to run my app on the device. i investigated that i have the ios 4.2.1 (8C148) on my device. whats confusing me is the fact that in xcode i only can choose the target(ios deployment target) to be 4.2 and the system-profiler->software->developer shows me "Version: 3.2 (10M2423)"(witch i think is the latest) but under SDKs i only see iPhone OS: 4.2(8C134) and iPhone Simulator: and 4.2(8C134)
could this be the reason for this error, that the device is "newer" than my sdk?
You can obtain the 4.2 sdk from Apple's website. Looks like you only have the 3.2 one installed properly on your machine, you might have to redownload and reinstall.
Check out the wikipedia page for ios version numbers to confirm you're running the correct one:

magically the problem appears to be gone. as i turn one's back on that problem and simply developed for simulator, today its simply working ... :/

but I have an iPhone 13 plugged into my MacBook Pro. I know this might seem like a strange question, but when I try to build & run my app the following messages notify me
This iPhone 4 is running iOS 15.6.1 (19G82), which may
not be supported by this version of Xcode. An updated
version of Xcode may be found on the App Store or at
developer.apple.com.
I cannot remember when the following notification came to my attention, but it basically displays the same message and I took a screenshot of it when it occurred
I have contacted Apple, but I am on my second tech, who is asking me about my browser version, etc... which tells me that they are stalling - no browser, an app build & run in Xcode. An app literally targeting iOS 11.0 and above
When I run my app in my real device (iPhone 11 Pro, OS: IOS: 15.4) in Xcode (version: 13.3), the build is succeeded, but the app does not launch in my phone and I receive this message in Xcode:
How can I resolve this ?
Well, here is a short story that I've experienced during my casual work day.
I tried to pair new phone to XCode and it prompted exactly same error as yours.
At the end of the day it turned out that phone had an Apple Watch that is paired.
We simply disabled/unpaired the phone from Apple Watch and it worked out.
Maybe you can give it a try.
Edit: Finding the XCode version that supports iOS 15.4 may also work.
In my case the problem was that I was targeting an older version of iOS than the one present in my device. Also, XCode was not updated and didn't support my phone's version. After updating XCode, I could change the iOS target to the latest and all worked out.
I had trouble with installing -deployed adhoc- development app before upgrading to iOS 7.1 and XCode 5.1
XCode 5.0 wasn't recognizing iPhones with iOS 7.1.
We upgraded and everything seems fine until we deployed as adhoc distribution.
I followed solution at Enterprise app deployment doesnt work on ios 7.1 and it greatly worked for installing the app in iphones with ios 7.1
But, now iphones with ios 7.0x can't install the app.
Results that some of our boss' bosses hadn't upgraded and don't want to, and desires backwards compatibility.
The app starts downloading but stops in the middle, the icon is completely grayed out and the app doesn't open.
Looking for alternatives, we are trying to acquire another macbook with previous system but it had been very hard to obtain our current resources.
We started implementing in the html page a script for recognizing the device, using user-agent variable, we plan to use this script to choose different plist files for iOS version 7.1 or previous. We expect it works as soon as we obtain the ipa in the newer macbook, as soon as we get it...
I wish for an easier solution that allows compatibility with newer versions and let us avoid project 'branch'ification.
Thanks a lot!
Seems like every time i go thru a required update of either the mac OS or the device iOS, i always end up getting very frustrated to the point of giving up on the iphone/ipad development altogether.
I just recently bought an ipad2 (iOS 5.1.1). And i noticed that my old Xcode 4 didnt support this iOS version. So now I just upgraded to XCode 4.2. But now I am still required to downgrade the iPad2 iOS to 5.0 (unfortunately). Now if I wanted to develop for iOS 5.1, then I must upgrade to XCode 4.3.2, which means I also need to upgrade my OS to Lion (i currently have Snow Leopard).
I believe these are the prerequisites that i was able to straighten out. Please correct me if Im wrong.
Finally, if my assessment here is correct, then I do need to download the iOS 5.0 firmware. I am unable to find a link to this anywhere on apple's site (everything is for 5.1). Anybody know where i can get the download link for older iOS's ?
Thanks!
When you go to your Xcode organizer, could you connect your iPad and select "Use For development" button that appears with your device in the organizer?
If the answer is "yes", then you can develop for iOS 4 and just do your testing on your iPad running OS 5.1.1.
If the answer is "no", then you should update your Macintosh to Lion and your Xcode to 4.3.X (which will include the iOS 5.0 & 5.1 SDK).
If you want to "downgrade" your iPad to iOS 5.0 (and good luck with that), you can find a download link in this article.
But don't stress too much. Once you get accustomed to development, you can hopefully keep up with the times (and the frequent OS & Xcode updates) pretty easily.
I have an app created from sample code I found online. I hooked up my iPod touch 4G to my computer and everything worked fine, app ran.
Then I hooked up my iPhone 3G to the computer, established provisioning profiles, etc. In the organizer the device shows up as a green dot, so we're good. The name of the device is right there next to the run button so that's a good sign. But when I hit run it says "build succeeded" and then goes directly to "finished running on " but nothing shows up on the app!
I've tried this with several apps now and all work on iPod touch, but none on iPhone.
Devices are running newest operating systems, 4.2 for the iPhone, Xcode version is the newest.
I had a different question with more than likely the same answer
App built with Xcode 4.2 ios 5.0 crashing when installed on iphone with ios 4.3.5
I found the solution here
Is it possible to target older iOS versions when using Xcode 4.2 and iOS 5 SDK?
by mmorris
I had to do what he clearly explained and 1 more thing:
Set the compiler in the Project and Target Build Set to LLVM GCC 4.2
That got the app running on my older devices
I had problem to run on simulator not on device.
Tried above options but didn't work for me.
Finally, Just Resetting Simulator did the trick.
Make sure you are targeting the least iOS version and SDK that you can in the build profiles (targets, summary, Devices, Deployment target). Also, check the error console (All Output) at the bottom right and see if there's some kind of problem occurring.
