Migrating an ASP.Net-MVC Application to a New Server - asp.net-mvc

So basically, I developed this ASP.Net MVC application on a Windows 7 box with Visual Studio 2008. It works well on the local machine, and I was able to host it in IIS no worries. I then decided to upload it onto subversion, and fetch it on a different Windows Server 2008 machine. I downloaded it, had the IIS document root point to my application folder, and started it up.
I can visit the site fine. However, as soon as it needs to do anything with the SQL database I get the following error:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
My ConnectionString to the SQL database is as follows:
<add name="UserClaimsConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\UserClaims.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
The error throws a wobble about allowing remote connections, but the database is local! Additionally, when I look at the StackTrace of the error, I see something odd at one portion:
OpenIdProviderMvc.Models.ClaimRepository.ResetAutoSend(String upi) in C:\OpenIdProviderMvc\Models\ClaimRepository.cs:40
The directory which it is referring to happens to be where I had it stored... on the development box! It is stored in a different location on the Windows 2008 server.
Where have I gone wrong in migrating this project?
EDIT:
Here is the full stack trace to provide a bit of additional information.
[SqlException (0x80131904): A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. The path in the stack trace probably points to some path on your dev machine because that is what is in the .pdb files (have they been added to subversion?). I don't think this is related to the connection error and you will probably have to sort that out separately.

You need to install SQL Server 2008 Express on the server if it is not already installed. ASP.NET needs sql server express installed to attach the mdf database file in your data directory.
You can download it here

Format of the initialization string Error when connecting to Azure DB after deployment. Works fine locally

*SOVLED: Had a % in my password which works run from my local machine. Reset password and changed the % to a # and it works fine! *
I have an MVC 4 app using EF and Azure. I can connect and run the application pointing to the Azure DB just fine from my local machine but it doesn't run on deployment. I get the following error:
Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 130.
Please note that my error states index 130 while all the other reported instances of this error state index 0.
I'm not sure what is going on. Anyone have ideas? I've been searching for a while now and I haven't come up with anything useful.
I'm using code first EF.

asp.net mvc: InitializeSimpleMembershipAttribute throwing exception when app is run from IIS, but works fine when app is run from Visual Studio

I created a asp.net mvc4 web application in Visual Studio. By default it creates a file Filters\InitializeSimpleMembershipAttribute.cs. I am getting an exception on line 34 when this attribute is invoked:
using (var context = new UsersContext())
{
**if (!context.Database.Exists())**
{
// Create the SimpleMembership database without Entity Framework migration schema
((IObjectContextAdapter)context).ObjectContext.CreateDatabase();
}
}
The exception happens when I try to run the webapp through IIS, but does not happen when running the app through visual studio F5 or Ctrl+F5 (VS uses iisexpress I think). The ConnectionString is same in both cases and copied below. Also I have configured the apppool in IIS to run under my identity (to match what happens when app is run through VS).

Why are my MVC 4 Authorize checks throwing an exception?

I am using Visual Studio 2012 with SQL Server Express 2012. I created an MVC 4 Web Application using the "Internet Application" template.
I wanted to use an existing database on my instance of SQL Server 2012 Express (as opposed to the template's MDF). I have modified my web.config to point to my local SQL express instance instead and have deleted the template-generated MDF. My Web.Config has:
<add name="DefaultConnection"
connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=Administration;Integrated Security=SSPI;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
The stock membership code has a call to initialize the DB:
WebSecurity.InitializeDatabaseConnection("DefaultConnection", "UserProfile", "UserId", "UserName", autoCreateTables: true);
Once the application fires up, the tables get created in the Administration database as I would expect. I can create users and they are populated in Administration. I can populate the roles table and add roles to a user's profile through code and verify that it took. e.g.:
Roles.GetRolesForUser("kristian"); // = string[] { "Administrator" }
But if I try and use role-based authorization like:
[Authorize(Roles = "Administrator")]
I get the following exception:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
It gives a long nasty stack trace that makes me think it's still trying to create an MDF file:
[SqlException (0x80131904): Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.]

The line at the bottom of this bundle of joy makes me think it's related to the now-deleted MDF ('System.Web.DataAccess.SqlConnectionHelper.CreateMdfFile'). Am I correct in this? Or is the authorization implemented by the template just incomplete?
If someone else has dealt with this or knows why my attribute usage is failing I would greatly appreciate the help.
I had this same problem. It appears to be related to not initializing SimpleMembership properly. Try making sure that [InitializeSimpleMembership] is used or directly call Database.SetInitializer<UsersContext>(null);

The database on the server definately has the exact same structure and data as it was restored from a .bak file of the original (from which the EDM was generated).
Any help on this will be much appreciated.
For reference sake: this was caused due to my hosting provider changing the port I had to use to connect to SQL server. Not related to the code.

Cannot open database, Login failed for user

I'm running the nerddinner MVC application on visual studio, and the database is on sql server 2008. I was previously having problems with permissions, etc but I seemed to have these sorted.
I created a user - taraw in SQL Server Management Studio, and got this all working. I can log into it fine.
When I test the application, I can see all the database entries, it is only however when I want to register a new user that the application crashes with this error:
closed.
Failed to generate a user instance of
SQL Server. Only an integrated
connection can generate a user
instance. The connection will be
closed.
I am using the aspnet membership api to register and maintain user accounts. I used the aspnet_regsql.exe tool to add the api tables to my existing database.
This is the connection string I have in the web.config file:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="ApplicationServices" connectionString="Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=nerddinner;user id=taraw;password=Password;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
<add name="nerddinnerEntities" connectionString="metadata=res://*/Models.NerdDinner.csdl|res://*/Models.NerdDinner.ssdl|res://*/Models.NerdDinner.msl;provider=System.Data.SqlClient;provider connection string="Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=nerddinner;user id=taraw;password=Password;MultipleActiveResultSets=True"" providerName="System.Data.EntityClient" />
</connectionStrings>
I would imagine the problem is with the Application Services connection string as I can see all the other information from the database fine.
Here is the stack trace,
[SqlException (0x80131904): Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. The connection will be closed.]

EDIT:
I have also tried the following commands:
1>EXEC sp_grantlogin 'TaraW-PC\TaraW'
2>GO
1>USE nerddinner
2>GO
1>EXEC sp_grantdbaccess 'TaraW-PC\TaraW'
2>GO
1>EXIT
however I get the following error for that:
Msg 15063, Level 16, State 1, Server
TARAW-PC, Line 1 The login already has
an account under a different user nameclosed.
Best bet would be to leave user instance on and to let it use integrated security, then ASP.NET can create/own the database and you won't have to worry about it.
Anyhow, granting access to the windows account 'TaraW-PC\TaraW' won't help a lick here as you are not logging in with that account, you are logging in with a sql account called taraw. What you need to do is:
1) run aspnet_regsql to create your application services database.
2) create said account in the database
3) add that account to the various aspnetdb roles you'd need.
Removed "User Instance = true" from Application Services connection string. Did the trick for me.
