I am looking for a way to get the essence or the most important aspect of a webpage? If I provide a URL, is there any external service which can accomplish this? I am not looking for snap.com like service as it provides a snapshot.
I might be willing to even implement such a system on my own. For beginning I do not want to put excessive effort, but rather would love to able to get some basic results. Are there any thoughts on how I may approach this problem?

You can try Yahoo's Term extraction service
Update 02-May-2012
Yahoo has release a new Content Analysis Web service which will be replacing the Term extraction service. It can be invoked by syntactically sweet YQL as shown below
select * from contentanalysis.analyze where url='http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/11/world/europe/greece-main/index.html';
There is also AlchemyAPI which offers a weservice which may serve your purpose.

By snippet, do you mean like a quote that sums up the entire page you want to link to?
So if snap.com isn't a fancy, what about the entire page? For verbosity's sake? You could try out BackupURL if you want like a cache of the entire page of the site instead just a snapshot of a portion of it.

I need a control which can display thumbnails similar as seen on the attached image.
It should support:
virtual mode
handle up to 50.000 images
thumbnail groups
scaling
work with Delphi XE3.
If such control does not yet exist I would have to create one from scratch. What is the best strategy for developing a control like this?
See an example of what it should look like
RMKlever has a series of blog-posts and sample code here. that can emulate a wide variety of things, but you would have to make code modifications yourself if you're particular about your desired format.
I believe the control is one of his own called rkView. The demos may require a lot of work to get them working for you, I found working with his stuff was difficult to get started with due to lack of documentation and samples but I eventually figured it all out.

I have a question, I was wondering if it is professional to use jQuery mobile for a iPhone app? I mean, i just needed to create photo galleries and i used jQuery mobile, and then created a webview for it.
Is it OK to create an iPhone app this way? Or is it not professional? Thanks!
Everyone will have an opinion about whether it is professional or not... it all depends on how you deliver your final product.
If your app looks polished, performs well and adheres to the HIG guidelines, then yes, it could be acceptable.
If you however throw something together which looks bad, performs poorly and doesn't function, then don't bother. You'd likely not make it past the approval process.
Take a look at: http://www.jqmgallery.com/. Lots of people have used jQuery Mobile to produce really slick looking apps.
Ask the basic questions -
Can I maintain it easily
Can someone else maintain it easily
Does it work with my SCM
Does it meet the requirements - fast enough, no crashing, etc.
It's professional, as long as you use best practices, and write decent scripts.

I am starting with web development. I looked at the URL design of a few websites, especially github and stack overflow.
A user page on github is of the form github.com/<username> (e.g. github.com/roma1n). This strikes me as requiring careful reservation of top-level identifiers, i.e. there cannot be a user explore in github, because github.com/explore shows a list of trending/interesting repositories. It also seems hard to extend once usernames that would make useful page names (e.g. latest, all) have been taken up by users.
Stackoverflow seems to go on the opposite route, where a user page is of the form stackoverflow.com/<numeric id>/<username>. This seems to add redundancy to the address, unless multiple users with the same nickname are allowed (e.g. to make life easier when identifying through other providers such as OpenId?).
What are the pros and cons of each solution, (and of the other obvious ones such as example.com/users/<numeric_id> or example.com/users/<nickname>)? Is there a current best practice or reasonable default?
I think your suggestion example.com/users/<nickname> is pretty reasonable. given a choice I'd pick this, becuase it's more memorable for users than an id, and it sidesteps the the users nickname problem. of course you're free to adopt any convention that fits your use case, so whatever works!

I'm sure this is publicly available somewhere but my google-fu has failed me. What I'd like to do is download the most accurate lat/long/alt data available for the world. This can exclude oceanic regions. Also, I do not need addresses. Mostly, what I need is: given a lat/long what is the alt? Google Maps does not currently have altitude data available and I'd prefer not to use public web services as there is no SLA.
The best I've been able to find has been: http://www.geonames.org/export/ ... In fact, they are also a great example of why I can't use public web services for these lookups: http://geonames.wordpress.com/2009/01/25/what-to-do-against-ddos-effects/
Thanks in advance!!!!
You can download the Digital Elevation Model for the US at http://seamless.usgs.gov/
I believe it also has international data, but that is less accurate.
I don't know where to find it currently, but the term you should be googling for is "Digital Elevation Model".
you can get the geolocalized articles of wikipedia :
using the wikipedia API : http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php
via DBpedia http://wiki.dbpedia.org/Downloads32#geographiccoordinates
via freebase http://www.freebase.com/view/location/location + freebase API

I think the best part of flash is the possibility to create not squared user interfaces, so I like the idea to create desktop apps using flash. I know AIR is for that but it doesn't allow real access to OperatingSystem apis and dlls and the commercial options are kind of difficult to customize.
You can try ScreenweaverHX:
http://haxe.org/com/libs/swhx
It's the Haxe-based successor of the old Screenweaver. However, it's not as simple as the old version used to be. Most likely you need to take a look to the basics of Haxe and Neko, the 2 technologies it's based on.
There's another project on top of SWHX that it's called HippoHX. It aims to "complete" SWHX providing that extra functionality you might miss (simple ActionScript APIs and a GUI). However, it's in its early stages:
http://hippohx.com
DISCLAIMER: I'm the owner of HippoHX, so my point is obviously biased.
As far as I know SWHX is the only Open Source alternative at this point.
Try flajector. it's powerfull converter from flash to exe. You can to develop your application using AIR. And then you can convert it into desktop application .exe
